IL RITORNO CHE NON VOLEVO is above all a book about Love. Love can be eternal
only if you love from afar, because Love maintains its sense of ideality
according to platonic prospective as an idea. When Love comes to be embodied, it
becomes an actualization of a cultural and historical prospective. One loves as
one thinks, as one eats, as one walks, as one dresses...and this is not Eternal
Love. This Love is preordained to perish. For this reason, there cannot be Love
between Ayako and the protagonist. Ayako aims for Eternal Love, since she is

Package: powernowd
Version: 0.90-2
Severity: normal

The README and the man page both state that powernowd scales voltage
("Daemon to control the speed and voltage of CPUs"), which it does not
(regrettably).

The README.Debian says you need to mount sysfs in fstab (see below),
but this isn't true for recent 2.6 kernels at least. Since 2.6.4 I've
been running with no such definition in fstab and /sys works fine.
I just installed 2.6.7 on a new machine and /sys got created automatically.

Thanks for the good work -- powernowd works great! Pity about the absence
of voltage scaling though.

Cheers,
David

Out of date information from README.Debian:

You also need to have the sysfs file system mounted, so that the daemon can
find the interface to the frequency scaling support in the kernel. If that
isn't already done, mkdir /sys and add an entry to /etc/fstab that looks
something like this:

sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

Subject: powernowd: Specify minimum processor speed
Package: powernowd
Version: 0.90-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi There,

powernowd is really great, thanks for packaging it, I'm using it now on my
workstation and notebook.

On my workstation it would be good if it were possible to specify a
minimum processor speed so that it doesn't scale down too far, eg, on my
system:

Restarting powernowd: powernowd: PowerNow Daemon v0.90, (c) 2003-2004 John
Clemens
powernowd: Found 1 cpu:
powernowd: cpu0: 375Mhz - 3000Mhz
powernowd.

375Mhz is a bit too slow - when I start doing something it takes a few
moments before the frequency ramp up starts. Perhaps if it was configurable
to be limited to 1000Mhz as a miminum that would be great?

Cheers,

Marcus

powernowd requires the cpufreq_userspace module to be loaded. It would
be useful if the startup script tried to load it (if "userspace" is not

Hi,

it might be nice to have powernowd include minimaly niced processes
(nice 5) in the calculation while still ignoring heavily niced
processes (nice 19). But I'm not sure if that is feasable.

I guess powernowd currently only looks at the overall stats (like the
second line in top) for niced processes and considering only some
would require going through the full task list. Is that right? In that
case it might be to expensive to do it.

One notices that
$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
924000
has been changed by installation and removal of cpufreqd. It is so
high here.

But installing cpudynd or powernowd don't set it back. So they don't
"play with a full deck". Therefore both cpudynd and powernowd should
do something like
  cat cpuinfo_min_freq > scaling_min_freq
  cat cpuinfo_max_freq > scaling_max_freq
upon installation. And cpufreqd should do the same upon removal.
This bug will be sent to all three packages.

Also powernowd -dvvv shows it stepping down all 8 steps, but the stats
files shows it only stepped down two steps, due to the above artifical
limit left over. I suppose -dvvv shows what powernowd tells the kernel
to do, not necessarily what really happens. Maybe the man page should
mention that.

Package: powernowd
Version: 0.96-2
Severity: minor

There is not enough documentation to get one started.

# invoke-rc.d powernowd restart
Restarting powernowd:
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq: No such file or
directory

PowerNowd encountered and error and could not start.
Please make sure that:
 - You are running a v2.6.7 kernel or later

yes, 2.6.12

 - That you have sysfs mounted /sys

yes, sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)

 - That you have the core cpufreq and cpufreq-userspace
   modules loaded into your kernel

# lsmod|grep cpu
cpufreq_powersave 1600 0
cpufreq_userspace 4412 0
I suppose. You had better be more specific.

 - That you have the cpufreq driver for your cpu loaded,
and that it works. (check dmesg for errors)

Better give some examples there. This was a thinkpad r50e.
Without concrete directions, many users can't bridge the knowledge gap.

Not enough information in READMEs etc.

Severity: important

I'm running a P4 (with HT) using the p4_clockmod cpufreq module. Since
upgrading to 2.6.16, powernowd won't run, complaining the proper /sys
entries aren't there. Looking in /sys/devices/system/cpu, there is cpu0
and cpu1. The cpu0 directory has no cpufreq information, but cpu1 does
(and it works, I tried it with some of the other modules). This may just
be a regression in the kernel interface, but I'll let you make the call.

Hi,

I installed powernowd and added the following modules to /etc/modules
to make it work:

powernow-k8
cpufreq-userspace

On startup, powernow-k8 detects the cpu's:

powernow-k8: Found 4 AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors (version 1.60.2)

It seems that powernowd does not take into account the current system cpu
load, only user cpu load seems to be considered.

E.g. VMware has a significant amount of computing load running in system
space. Even if the cpu is 100% busy, if the user cpu load part is lower than
the threshold (by default 80%) then powernowd won't scale up the cpu
frequency.

Thanks,
Thomas

Aparently dh_installinit don't want to add the S??powernowd init
scripts, only the Stop one's

With update-rc.d is simple, "update-rc.d powernowd defaults 80 20" for
example, but here is using just dh_installinit without options
(looking at the man seems correct) to add the update-rc.d thing manually

Hi Bdale,

Ubuntu has some interesting changes to the powernowd package:
http://people.ubuntu.com/~scott/patches/powernowd/powernowd_0.96-2ubuntu2_packaging.patch

They add a script detecting the CPU type and automatically loading the
right cpufreq_ module. This is the kind of changes that make Ubuntu "just
work" that we should really integrate back. Please consider this.

Cheers,

Package: powernowd
Version: 0.97-2

After resuming from sleep (suspend to RAM), the CPU is permanently
clocked at maximum. This does not happen (as in "works fine") after
resuming from hibernation (suspend to disk).

After resuming, powernowd complains that it "Can't open
scaling_setspeed: No such file or directory", and there is in fact no
such file in "/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu[0-1]/cpufreq/". However after
restarting the daemon, the file is recreated, and it works fine.

Hello powernowd maintainer,

Please, consider using lsb functions for display messages
in your init script (log_daemon_msg, log_progress_msg,
log_end_msg and others from /lib/lsb/init-functions)
instead of just using echo.

Thanks.

Hi,

since linux 2.6.30-1, powernowd doesn't start when booting my system but
simply hangs there indefinitely. Rebooting via ctrl-alt-delete is still possible
though.

Strange thing is, that it doesn't happen always, and usually works just fine
after a cold boot. Likewise it seems to work later on (e.g. just now I rebooted
with disabling powernowd in the init script, and startet it by hand once
booting was done).

Some information, if you need anything else, just ask ;).

Package: powernowd

The default polling interval is 1000 ms. That is a *long*
time on a human interface time scale. It's also a long time
compared to many tasks, like bringing up a window.

In fact, I've been sitting here with my eye on the second hand
of my watch, and I find that quite often, the burst of activity
that triggers powernowd is all over by the time it responds.
If/when that happens, turning up the CPU frequency is just a total
waste. It's closing the barn door after the horse has left.

So, powernowd really ought to poll faster. I know that no one
likes to do it, but the hard fact is that humans do notice
200ms delays. If powernowd is actually intended to make
the user interface snapper, it needs to poll at a 200ms interval,
and some people might even want 100ms.

Bug#602052: Removed package(s) from unstable

2012-11-21 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

 powernowd | 1.00-2 | source, amd64, armel, armhf, hurd-i386, i386, ia64,
kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc

--- Reason ---
RoQA; obsolete
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors (ftp.debian.org
included) until the next dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 602...@bugs.debian.org.

The full log for this bug can be viewed at http://bugs.debian.org/602052
