Bug#680748: Removed package(s) from unstable

2012-08-25 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

loop-aes-utils | 2.16.2-3 | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, mips,
mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc
mount-aes-udeb | 2.16.2-3 | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel,
powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc

--- Reason ---
RoQA; unsupported
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors (ftp.debian.org
included) until the next dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 680...@bugs.debian.org.

While the losetup from mount does setup the loop device even if the
specified file is readonly and readonly device was not explicitly
requested the losetup from loop-aes-utils fails in this case.

This breaks existing boot scripts. I can no longer boot my live system
from httpfs unless I apply additional patches to workaround this
incompatibility in losetup.

This might affect other boot scripts and some of the standard
debian-live network boot methods.

I see it might be useful to make the device readwrite and fail when that
is not possible but this is an incompatible behaviour and should be only
turned on when requested by an option.

Thanks

Michal

In the initramfs script, when /sbin/losetup is called, it typically
will call gpg, which usually needs interaction with the user (to ask
for a passphrase) and hence needs /dev/tty.

This patch makes it wait for /dev/tty before starting losetup.

Using the debian installer, setting up an encrypted root partition on top of an
md device results in an
unbootable system. During the initrd boot process, the loopaes script in
scripts/local-top runs before mdadm
which causes the script to enter an infinite loop trying to set up a loop using
a non-existent md device.

One workaround is to hard-code
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/loopaes to report "mdadm" as a
prerequisite and rebuild the initramfs.

The script should be made to correctly determine its prerequisites so that the
devices it depends on are made
available before it attempts to setup the encrypted loop.

Package: loop-aes-utils
Version: 2.12r-14
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

concerning full loop-AES support for yaird (and for initramfs-tools),
I would like to discuss the idea of a common configuration file for
loop-AES devices.

First of all, why could an extra config file be needed?

The problem with loop-AES devices is that most, but not all device
attributes required to set up a device with losetup can also be
retrieved by calling losetup (i.e. with 'losetup -a'). More specifically,
losetup output can not be used to gain information about the GPG key file
used for (possibly multi-key mode) encryption.

An existing solution is to describe a loop device with a loop= option
for the underlying device in fstab, along with gpgkey= and optionally
gpghome= options.

However, such an fstab entry is only feasible for loop devices which are
directly mounted (i.e. /dev/hda3 => /dev/loop0 => "/home"), but fails to
work for more complex setups in which loop devices are not mounted, like
using an encrypted loop-AES device as a physical LVM volume.

For yaird, I recently wrote full loopback and loop-AES device support.
As to handling GPG keys, there are two modes of operation, either
copying the GPG key (and optionally GPG home directory) to the initramfs
image, or mounting a device containing the key (and GPG home directory)
upon boot (comparable to the build-init.sh script accompanying
loop-AES).

This code handles every corner case one could think of regarding loop-AES
devices, but there exists a (at least to me) major design flaw with the
code (which is also the reason why I was not yet confident to publish it
to the yaird list or BTS):

In order to solve the above dilemma with GPG keys, a new config option
(or more precisely a goal) had to be introduced, which specifies for
each GPG key encrypted loop-AES device
* the loop device (i.e. /dev/loop0),
* an absolute GPG key path (compare gpgkey= fstab option),
* optionally, a GPG home directory (compare gpghome= fstab option),
* and optionally, a mount point on the initramfs image, if the key device
is to be mounted upon boot (instead of copying the key to the image).

This works very well, but does shows its weaknesses when running yaird
in --test mode (where the config file is not read and thus yaird does
not have the required information about keys), and more importantly:
It is a *serious abuse* of the yaird config file. Device configuration
info should never be located in an initramfs creator config file, but
instead gained from a device-specific config file or tool (e.g. mdadm,
cryptsetup and /etc/crypttab, (pv|vg|lv)display, ...).

Finally, this is where my idea for a loop-AES config file comes in.

I propose to have a file (named something like '/etc/loopaestab' or
maybe '/etc/default/loopaes') with the loop-aes-utils package, that
fully describes every loop-AES device for which the configuration
cannot be derived from losetup output or fstab.

The format could be modeled after /etc/crypttab, for example:

  #
  /dev/loop5 /dev/md0 encryption=AES256,gpgkey=/etc/keys/root.gpg

The following options would be supported:

- offset=..., sizelimit=..., encryption=..., loinit=...

These options can also be parsed from losetup output, and would
strictly have to match with the actual loop device configuration.

- pseed=..., phash=..., itercountk=...

These options should be available for completeness only.

An initramfs creator seeing these options would probably fail
with an "unsupported option" message: We do not ever want to encrypt
root filesystems with random keys, for example.

- gpgkey=..., gpghome=...

These are the options we are so desperately trying to retrieve.

- gpgmount

This option would be the only loop-AES losetup unrelated option.

If the keyword "gpgmount" is specified, the initramfs creator is
instructed to mount the (unencrypted) device which contains the GPG
key [gpgkey=...] (and optionally GPG home directory [gpghome=...])
  upon boot.

If the keyword "gpgmount" is not specified, the GPG key (and
optionally GPG home directory) would be directly copied to the
  image b

Hello,
I would like to say that I appreciate the added support for root
on loop-aes from #378488 very much. I would also appreciate being able
to use the suspend support offered by uswsusp and other packages but I
use an ncrypted swap on my laptop. It would be nice if the initramfs
integration could be expanded to enable setting up loops for swap
while still in initramfs (and thus before restoring from any
hibernation package).

Thanks,
Will

*** Please type your report below this line ***

The option INITRAMFS_LOOPAES for mkinitramfs is explained in the file
/usr/share/doc/loop-aes-utils/README. I think it would be more appropriate to
include a short explanation in the initram-tools config files. So that one
can spot the information more easily.

A starting point could be a file
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/loopaes with the following content:
##
# Support for encrypted root using loop-aes
#
# INITRAMFS_LOOPAES : [ auto | no | yes ]
#
# auto : Determine from /etc/fstab if the root device is encrypted and
#add support for it if needed
# yes : Add support for encrypted root device
# no : Don't add support for encrypted root device
#

Since the move to remove /etc/mtab and link it to /proc/mounts, loop
mounts no longer clean up the used loopback devices after unmount. It
seems the loopback code in mount/unmount needs the information in mtab
to do this automatically.

loop-aes-utils Version: 2.16.2-1
loop-aes-source Version: 3.3a-1

Hello,

I just migrated from Lenny x86 to Squeeze x86.

Because in Squeeze there is no loop-aes-module package, I built the
loop-aes-sources with m-a and installed them.

Mounting of my loop-aes encrypted partitions works, but only manual.

On system boot via fstab, there comes no password prompt after stating
that the loop module was loaded, instead the system sits there and waits
forever (at least 5 minutes). When I hit Ctrl-C, there come a couple of
messages something like this: "I/O buffer error on loop device".

I actually use now the "noauto" option in fstab to disable boot mount.
Then the system boots ok. Manual mounting of the loop-aes-partition
also works fine.

Compiling the kernel-sources with deactivating the original loop block
device did not help either.

booting with kernel option acpi=off did not help either.

Package: loop-aes-utils
Version: 2.12r-13

/home is loop-aes encrypted partition. I also have separate / and /usr
partitions. losetup (and subsequently mount) require gpg (which is in
the /usr partition) to be available in order to set up the loop device
(and mount it afterward). When /etc/init.d/checkfs-loop runs, /usr is
not yet mounted and I am unable to have my /home partition checked and
mounted. After the system boots, I am able to mount the drive as
expected.

I have fixed this by moving the /usr/bin/gpg binary to /bin (and
symlinking back to /usr/bin/gpg). gpg also requires the libz libraries,
so I moved /usr/lib/libz.* to /lib and symlinked back in /usr/lib.

Thank you,
Joshua Rubin

I try to install Ubuntu 5.0.3 via expert installer on a RAID system.
Partition scheme (identical on all 3 discs):

  /boot, ext3 / RAID1 , plain
  / ext3 / RAID5 , loop-aes (key) on md1
 swap , loop-aes (tmp)
  /srv , ext3 / RAID5 , loop-aes (key) on m2

After successfull installation system fails to boot, as the init
script loopaes is started in front of the mdadm script.
In my opinion this is wrong, as the RAID must have been started
prior to loopaes.

HOT-FIX:
  1. Unpack the initrd image

  2. Modify the file and change in the section "prereqs()"
   echo ""
  to
   echo "mdadm"

  3. Repack the initrd image

PERMANENT FIX

Make this change in the file scripts/local-top/loop-aes

Hi,

the loop-aes.readme suggests to use the option --s2k-count 8388608 for
generating gpg keys. In short this improves the resitance to dictionary
attacks.

The attached patch adds this option to the gpg call. This commandline
option is available in gpg 1.4.6 or later.

Thanks for your time,
Thomas

loop-aes-utils diverts /bin/mount et al. I realise this is kind of the
entire purpose of the package, but I just happened to mention it in the
hearing of the author of dpkg who said "it is strictly forbidden to
divert any of the essential components of an Essential package; the
reason for this is that if there is a failure at the critical moment
then your system will be unbootable".

Could you please find some other way to do this?

Thanks,

when using "user" option in fstab, mount from this package works fine for

but umount fails with "umount: only root can unmount /dev/sdc1 from

Related fstab entries:
/dev/sdc1 /media/usb1 vfat

/dev/sdc1 /media/usb1_auto autonoauto,user
/dev/sdc1 /media/usb1_ntfs ntfsnoauto,user,fmask=133,dmask=022,

Regular mount from "mount" package works fine with exactly this fstab, so it is
not broken fstab
entry.

I resolved the situaltion by uninstalling loop-aes-utils.

Bug#685376: postinst fails on non-default Debian kernels and is useless on =<3.4

Much of that postinst seems to be workarounds written in 2005 or
earlier.

I think this conditional block could be removed rather than fixed
(but looking at #543592 and #644318, maybe a package RM is better).

The MAKEDEV command itself is normally a no-op if udev is running
(via patches added during 2005/2006).

The conditional would have been always false since around August
last year ([2011-08-09] linux-latest-2.6 39 MIGRATED to testing)

Cheers,
Steve
