Bug#680748: Removed package(s) from unstable
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following package(s) have been removed from unstable: loop-aes-utils | 2.16.2-3 | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc mount-aes-udeb | 2.16.2-3 | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc --- Reason --- RoQA; unsupported -- Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug. The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next dinstall run at the earliest. Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is really needed, please contact them if this should be the case. We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package. Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you have further comments please address them to 680...@bugs.debian.org. First of all, why could an extra config file be needed? The problem with loop-AES devices is that most, but not all device attributes required to set up a device with losetup can also be retrieved by calling losetup (i.e. with 'losetup -a'). More specifically, losetup output can not be used to gain information about the GPG key file used for (possibly multi-key mode) encryption. An existing solution is to describe a loop device with a loop= option for the underlying device in fstab, along with gpgkey= and optionally gpghome= options. However, such an fstab entry is only feasible for loop devices which are directly mounted (i.e. /dev/hda3 => /dev/loop0 => "/home"), but fails to work for more complex setups in which loop devices are not mounted, like using an encrypted loop-AES device as a physical LVM volume. For yaird, I recently wrote full loopback and loop-AES device support. As to handling GPG keys, there are two modes of operation, either copying the GPG key (and optionally GPG home directory) to the initramfs image, or mounting a device containing the key (and GPG home directory) upon boot (comparable to the build-init.sh script accompanying loop-AES). This code handles every corner case one could think of regarding loop-AES devices, but there exists a (at least to me) major design flaw with the code (which is also the reason why I was not yet confident to publish it to the yaird list or BTS): In order to solve the above dilemma with GPG keys, a new config option (or more precisely a goal) had to be introduced, which specifies for each GPG key encrypted loop-AES device * the loop device (i.e. /dev/loop0), * an absolute GPG key path (compare gpgkey= fstab option), * optionally, a GPG home directory (compare gpghome= fstab option), * and optionally, a mount point on the initramfs image, if the key device is to be mounted upon boot (instead of copying the key to the image). This works very well, but does shows its weaknesses when running yaird in --test mode (where the config file is not read and thus yaird does not have the required information about keys), and more importantly: It is a *serious abuse* of the yaird config file. Device configuration info should never be located in an initramfs creator config file, but instead gained from a device-specific config file or tool (e.g. mdadm, cryptsetup and /etc/crypttab, (pv|vg|lv)display, ...). Finally, this is where my idea for a loop-AES config file comes in. I propose to have a file (named something like '/etc/loopaestab' or maybe '/etc/default/loopaes') with the loop-aes-utils package, that fully describes every loop-AES device for which the configuration cannot be derived from losetup output or fstab. The format could be modeled after /etc/crypttab, for example: # /dev/loop5 /dev/md0 encryption=AES256,gpgkey=/etc/keys/root.gpg The following options would be supported: - offset=..., sizelimit=..., encryption=..., loinit=... These options can also be parsed from losetup output, and would strictly have to match with the actual loop device configuration. - pseed=..., phash=..., itercountk=... These options should be available for completeness only. An initramfs creator seeing these options would probably fail with an "unsupported option" message: We do not ever want to encrypt root filesystems with random keys, for example. - gpgkey=..., gpghome=... These are the options we are so desperately trying to retrieve. - gpgmount This option would be the only loop-AES losetup unrelated option. If the keyword "gpgmount" is specified, the initramfs creator is instructed to mount the (unencrypted) device which contains the GPG key [gpgkey=...] (and optionally GPG home directory [gpghome=...]) upon boot. If the keyword "gpgmount" is not specified, the GPG key (and optionally GPG home directory) would be directly copied to the image b

Because in Squeeze there is no loop-aes-module package, I built the loop-aes-sources with m-a and installed them. Mounting of my loop-aes encrypted partitions works, but only manual. On system boot via fstab, there comes no password prompt after stating that the loop module was loaded, instead the system sits there and waits forever (at least 5 minutes). When I hit Ctrl-C, there come a couple of messages something like this: "I/O buffer error on loop device". I actually use now the "noauto" option in fstab to disable boot mount. Then the system boots ok. Manual mounting of the loop-aes-partition also works fine. Compiling the kernel-sources with deactivating the original loop block device did not help either. booting with kernel option acpi=off did not help either. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages loop-aes-utils depends on: ii gnupg 1.4.10-4 GNU privacy guard - a free PGP rep ii libblkid1 2.17.2-3.3 block device id library ii libc6 2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libselinux1 2.0.96-1 SELinux runtime shared libraries ii libsepol1 2.0.41-1 SELinux library for manipulating b ii mount 2.17.2-3.3 Tools for mounting and manipulatin Versions of packages loop-aes-utils recommends: ii sharutils 1:4.9-1shar, unshar, uuencode, uudecode loop-aes-utils suggests no packages. -- no debconf information --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Version: 2.16.2-3+rm Dear submitter, as the package loop-aes-utils has just been removed from the Debian archive unstable we hereby close the associated bug reports. I also have separate / and /usr partitions. losetup (and subsequently mount) require gpg (which is in the /usr partition) to be available in order to set up the loop device (and mount it afterward). When /etc/init.d/checkfs-loop runs, /usr is not yet mounted and I am unable to have my /home partition checked and mounted. After the system boots, I am able to mount the drive as expected. I have fixed this by moving the /usr/bin/gpg binary to /bin (and symlinking back to /usr/bin/gpg). gpg also requires the libz libraries, so I moved /usr/lib/libz.* to /lib and symlinked back in /usr/lib. Bug#685376: postinst fails on non-default Debian kernels and is useless on =<3.4

I think this conditional block could be removed rather than fixed (but looking at #543592 and #644318, maybe a package RM is better). The MAKEDEV command itself is normally a no-op if udev is running (via patches added during 2005/2006). The conditional would have been always false since around August last year ([2011-08-09] linux-latest-2.6 39 MIGRATED to testing) Cheers, Steve -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qa-packages-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
