Hi Juliusz!

Can you check if this problem still exists at newer packages?
If you could test it at version 3.9p1+debian-3 would be great. If it
does, can you provide some logs from server an client(s) ?

Greetings,

Package: openntpd
Version: 3.9p1-2bpo1

Openntpd uses the configuration file /etc/openntpd/ntpd.conf but
claims to use /etc/ntpd.conf in it's manpage
(/usr/share/man/man8/ntpd.8.gz) on the 1st line of the FILES-section.

If I remove /etc/openntpd/ntpd.conf then openntpd doesn't work, so I'm
sure that the manual page is wrong, that this file is needed instead
of /etc/ntpd.conf.

I include a patch that fixes the man page and that can be applied with:
/usr/bin/patch -p0 < /home/garo/openntpd-new-manpage.patch

Bug#468391: openntpd: can conflict with ntpdate

thanks

Hi Chris!

I'm afraid what you see is not caused by any ntpdate conflict with
openntpd, it's related to #330587.
Basically, this is because ntpdate and openntpd uses different methods
to achieve their goals, none of them collision or changes each other's
behaviour.

I'm trying to see what the root of the problem is, meanwhile, merged
reports.

Thanks for reporting it.

Which kernel are you running it into?

Can you start openntpd with the parameters '-d -s' manually to see what

Package: openntpd
Severity: wishlist

start-stop-daemon behaves different when there is a pid file as option
provided.

Going through whole /proc can be very slow in case there is a unreacheable
nfs fs and programs where started from there.
openntpd gets restart with every network device startup and will block the
startup of nfs until that shared fs times out.

-p option should be accepted by ntpd (at the very least for
compatibility with other ntp daemons). If not, man page and init script
should be modified to reflect this.

homero:~# /etc/init.d/ntp start
Starting NTP server: ntpd/usr/sbin/ntpd: invalid option -- 'p'

Package: openntpd
Version: 3.6.1p1-2
Severity: minor

PROBLEM:

On running the init script with the 'stop' argument the script returns an error:
# /etc/init.d/openntpd stop
Stopping openntpd: start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 759: No
such process
ntpd.

This also seems to affect later versions. I can't confirm this, but I
have looked through the Debian patches in 'unstable' and 'testing' and
they both seem to have the same problem.

SOLUTION:

I modified the init script to create a pidfile in the
/var/run/openntpd directory (which is created on install).

Modified line 30 to read:
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --make-pidfile
--pidfile=/var/run/openntpd/ntpd.pid --exec $DAEMON -- $DAEMON_OPTS

I am running Debian Sarge.
See attached patch against 3.6.1p1-2

Hello

I configured a NTP server in /etc/openntpd/ntpd.conf that was not even
resolvable by DNS but ntpd did not complain via syslog, it said
absolutely nothing there not even that the server was started.

bye,

Hello,

There was a problem while autobuilding your package with
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip.
Final binaries are still stripped.

If you call dh_strip correctly in debian/rules, this may mean that upstream
is stripping anyway.
You should look for call to strip, ld -s or install -s which may strip binaries.

Package: openntpd
Version: 3.9p1-7
Severity: minor

Openntpd on my Lenny system complains as follows each time its initscript
is invoked for a restart during system startup:

invoke-rc.d: WARNING: invoke-rc.d called during shutdown sequence
invoke-rc.d: enabling safe mode: initscript policy layer disabled

On my system this happens many times at various different points in
startup, since I have five or six interfaces: fixed, wireless, bridge,
and taps for my various virtual machines. Openntpd is restarted for
each one of them via its included script /etc/network/if-up.d/openntpd.
This prominent warning is displayed on the console each time.

Once the system is fully up, then the warning no longer appears.

Openntpd does appear to restart correctly despite the warning, but it
is noisy, hence I've opened this as a minor bug.

Nick

ntpd starts before network is available and is restartet again after
network scripts finished. Thats kind of annoying. A patch would be
simple: start the daemon after network has started.

I dont understand why this happens:
Even though openntpd is linked against @20... in all startup directories
(as services like samba, ssh, etc. are) it starts before networking
whereas all others dont...

Package: openntpd
Version: 3.9p1-7
Severity: normal

On a Debian Lenny system, /etc/network/if-up.d/openntpd calls
invoke-rc.d openntpd force-reload.

This causes that even when openntpd is disabled by update-rc.d -f
openntpd remove, or stopped manually by the user, it's started
after a network startup/reload.

Expected behaviour would be to only restart if the process is
running, and otherwise do nothing.

Severity: normal

Hallo,
I've tried to install openntpd package to an embedded system without CMOS
battery, i.e. this board lost date/time when it is switched off. I've found a
bug making this package hard usable without reading man page of openntpd server
and its init script. Daemon did not set time when it is started. The reason is,
that daemon looks for default config file at /etc/ntpd.conf, but package
contains config file /etc/openntpd/ntpd.conf. It is good idea let to server
knows it.

Solution is very simple:

File /etc/defaults/openntpd contains only comment lines, with an example.
Please add following line to it and all will be fine.

DAEMON_OPTS="-f /etc/openntpd/ntpd.conf -s"

Option -s can be subject to discussion, but -f is solution for all Debian-like
distribution.

Thank you,

  Pavel

Package: openntpd
Version: 3.9p1+debian-3
Severity: minor

ntpd.conf says
   # Addresses to listen on (ntpd does not listen by default)
and "man ntpd.conf" says
   listen on address
Specify a local IP address or a hostname the ntpd(8)
  daemon should listen on.
but nowhere does it explicitly say what it will actually listen
for. This may be obvious to a Debian openntp maintainer, but it would
be nice if it was immediately obvious to people who haven't used ntp
before too

So I suggest that the ntpd.conf entry be changed to
   # Act as an ntp server by listening to queries from these IP addresses/DNS
hostnames

And that "man ntpd.conf" be changed to
   listen on address
The ntpd(8) daemon will act as an ntp server by
listening to queries from this address. address can be
either an IP address or a DNS hostname.

Regards, Thue
