Since this is an orphaned package, it would be great if you can
prepare a QA upload of it, to have this (and maybe others :) ) bug
fixed.

Bug#517866: closed by Marco Rodrigues (mped has been removed from Debian, closing #517866)

2009-05-07 Thread E Taylor

Hi Angel,

... Barry replied "Aye, that's an upstream bug". I hope that makes sense.

Well, certainly this can be considered a bug; I've already fixed it for
the 5.1.2 release.

Great! I suppose that technically we should rename this bug to
something like "mped checks for wrong header file at build time", then
set it as a wishlist bug, then reopen it, then tag it as fixed
upstream. However, as this package has been orphaned I'm happy to just
let this bug stay closed.

For example, could it highlight JavaScript syntax inside an HTML document
where the tags were also correctly highlighted?

It sounds like a non-trivial change, but I'll think about it.

Thank you.

... you can force the syntax highlighting to the active document (to
PHP, say) by executing the following MPSL snippet:

local l = mp.active(); l.syntax = mp.syntax.php;

You can execute MPSL code by hitting Escape (escape+escape, if under
curses), or from the Edit menu.

Right, I'll make a note of that.

By the way, there are currently no JavaScript nor CSS syntax definitions.

Interesting. Well, next time I'm editing some JavaScript or CSS in MP,
I will try following
http://triptico.com/docs/mp_data_model.html#syntax_highlighting .

Hi,

Your package build-depends upon libjack0.100.0-dev, which will

The correct package to depend upon is libjack-dev. Your package will
not fail to build once the new jack is uploaded, because libjack-dev

Package: diald
Version: 0.16.5-3

I uses diald to dial my ISP (my university), which uses PPP with
dynamic IP address. Whenever the phone get interrupted by whatever
reason (e.g. incoming phone call, login time expire, and manual down
link request) when there is still an TCP connection there, the next
TCP request get diald to tries redial on the next incoming request.

That should not be a problem with static IP, because once the new link
is made the TCP connection either resumes, or starts doing a FIN
sequence successfully and make the link idle.

But with dynamic IP, the newly acquired link have a different IP,
which means that the TCP connection will fail, and will be in a FIN
wait state trying to shutdown the link. This means that the link will
keep going up in the next 20 minutes or so, until the shutdown
sequence finally timeout. This is quite troublesome, since I share
the phone with voice use. I end up having to manually block Internet
connections for 20 minutes to allow the TCP connection to timeout.

I suggest the following to be added, maybe commented out, to
/etc/diald/standard.filter:

--- suggested addition ---
# don't bring dynamic IP PPP connections back up to complete TCP FIN
keepup tcp 10 tcp.fin
ignore tcp tcp.fin
--- end suggestion ---

While this is not really complicated, I think it is not easy to come
up without holding some form of TCP specs. And considering that I
figured out how this can be done only four months after I notice the
problem, I think even a commented-out addition will help much.

I am using Debian 2.1, kernel version 2.0.34 and glibc 2.0.7.

Isaac.

Yes, a QA upload is an upload, prepared by someone, in the name of the
QA team: a one-shot upload (to help Debian updating a package) without
the need to take over the maintainership of the package itself.

Package: diald
Version: 0.98.2-0.1
Severity: wishlist

Diald can currently only handle 1 connection.
Here's a patch which will make /etc/init.d/diald handle several connections.
It starts multiple diald processes and looks at separate config/fifo/pid
files for each one.
The code's not TOO ugly (compared to the original, which has comments in,
etc ;-))
Hope you're interested.

Package: diald
Version: 0.99.1-1
Severity: normal

If I try to specify something like:

restrict 8:00:00 18:00:00 1-5 * *
down
restrict 0:00:00 7:59:59 * * *
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/chatscripts/provider1"
restrict * ** * *
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/chatscripts/provider2"

diald always uses the provider2 chatscript to diald the phone. As far as
I can tell from the manual page this should work.

It would be nice to have the windowmanager title bar contain the state of the
connection, ie "Diald: UP" (as well as the icon name). This way, it would
not be necessary to have the whole window on-screen.

Or perhaps the documentation is wierd? The icon name in mine is
"/var/run/diald.fifo" and the window title is "Diald: /var/run/diald.fifo".

Package: dcgui
Version: 0.80-1
Severity: important

This package as a whole suffers from very sloppy UTF-8 handling.

Assuming you're on a hub with a lot of international characters in filenames.

1. When in an UTF-8 locale: Does not display files in the "Find" view
where the files or directories contain non-UTF-8-encoded
characters. The lines become blank, and thus unusable. This hides
hits in *whole directories*.

2. Does not save files using UTF-8 encoding of filenames. Breaks all Gnome
apps and is extremely irritating.

3. Checking the "Use UTF8 characters" does not help at all. Remote
filenames are still invisible, and few peers understand them anyway.

I assume the DC protocol is not internationally safe, so this is
probably a protocol issue. Right??? Anyway, dcgui does not even seem
to have a strategy. Such a stragegy could be:

1. Try UTF-8
2. If fail, try latin1 (or something else),
3. else remove offending characters and display the rest.
4. Always use UTF-8 in filenames.

The bug #222340 is related, as the error messages come from case
1. above.

Package: diald
Version: 0.98.2-0.1
Severity: wishlist

I wish diald-control's icon would indicate to me visually if I have forced the
connection up or blocked the connection. Right now it only indicates up/down
but for example "up because of traffic" and "forced up" are not distinguished.

Sometimes I force up the connection, forget that I have forced it up, and then
leave it forced up for a long period of time.

Package: diald
Version: 0.99.1-1

Diald correctly brings up the link when it first recieves a packet, and
maintains the link until data stops flowing. It then brings the link
down, and, on 2.0 kernels, will never bring it up again.

The problem is a logic error in filter.c. There are a couple of places
(idle_filter_init and idle_filter_proxy) where the author has written

  if (af_packet && (fd = socket(...)) < 0) {
af_packet = 0;
set up fd the simple way
  }

when the condition ought to be

  if (!af_packet || (fd = socket(...)) < 0) {

I suspect that the #ifdeffery around these conditions disguised the
problem during testing.

Subject: diald: Re-open 32592 Problems with dynamic addressing
Package: diald
Version: 0.99.4-2.1
Severity: normal

Dear Jeff,

First of all, thanks for maintaining diald. I use it.

On Thu, 4 Nov 1999, Chris Cheney wrote this about bug report 32592:

"I believe that this bug has been fixed, since I have uploaded
the
current version 0.91.1 . I have no way to test this however,
and
was unable to reach the original submitter (David Morris). If
anyone can reproduce this bug feel free to change the severity
back."

I think I may be reproducing the bug.

My system uses dynamic IP addressing, diald, ppp and an old 28K modem
but no IP
masquerading or named. I've noticed for a long time that the first
packets sent
out after diald brings up my modem link are lost. For example, if the
link is
down and I type

$ ping -c 1 rahul.net

it starts the link, but fails with

ping: unknown host rahul.net

But once the link has been up for half a minute or so, the same ping
command
works great.

I've recently been making a concerted effort to fix this old bug and
have tried
all of the following, without result:

Upgraded my kernel, diald, etc...

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward = 1

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr = 5

buffer-packets off in /etc/diald/diald.options

changing from a slip proxy to ethertap

Here's the big but. BUT, I think I've found something interesting by
monitoring
internet traffic before and after diald sees it with

a utility called tcpdump, to see traffic going into diald and

a utility called serial line sniffer (slsnif), to see traffic
coming
out of diald (and going into the modem).

Specifically, I see that packets with the bogus default source IP
address
defined by "local" in /etc/diald/diald.options are seen at tap0, but not
at the
modem! For example,

$ tcpdump -i tap0
192.168.0.1.1384 > 198.187.188.2.domain

but I don't see this packet in slsnif's log file. (192.168.0.1 is the
bogus
default source IP address defined by "local" in
/etc/diald/diald.options).

Unless I'm mistaken, diald is eating these packets, which is a bad
thing(TM).
Ideally, I'd like to see these packets buffered until the ISP provides a

dynamic IP address. Then the packets should have their source IP
addresses
corrected and sent out.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like me to try something.

Thanks,
Kingsley

Some modems won't allow configuration commands to be specified on the
line after "ATZ". I worked around this by moving "ATZ" into MODEM_RESET
and then duplicating the code so that it first did the reset (and waited
for a response) and then the init.

Package: diald

Severity: normal

During the installation of 'diald', and after the debconf stuff was through
querying me about the various settings that it had asked for, I saw this, on
the stderr stream, during the package installation session:

Starting diald: fifo-created Quantifier follows nothing in regex; marked by <--
HERE in m/+ <-- HERE pap/ at /usr/sbin/cvt-pppconfig line 86, <> line 8.
dpkg: error processing diald (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255

I'm not sure what to make of it. Fortunately, it seems as like a bug that
may not affect the operation of 'diald' (assuming that the "cvt" would be
short for "convert", and that I can configure the diald installation,
myself.)

By the by and by, the debconf diald package configuration stuff is still
appreciated by this user.

Glitches can happen in text-processing systems, I know.

It would be nice if it were possible to have diald tear down the default

Package: diald
Version: 0.99.1-1

Description:

Diald hangs (99%CPU) if there's a FIFO 'reset' command during the dial and
the connection fails with a hangup before the 'connect' script returns.

Info:

> Sep 22 23:53:22 mayday diald[205]: start sl0: SIOCSIFMETRIC: Operation not

> configuration
This is in the connect script, I use it to dynamically decide on the protocol
that I'm going to use on this connection (slip or ppp). This in turn depends
on the system being called.

If I don't call the reset it appears (so far) that diald doesn't hang.
It doesn't seem to matter if it's ppp or slip.

> Sep 22 23:53:32 mayday connect: Calling ntl on 08005190100
The connect script has decided to call NTL.
It also adds a line to diald.log.

> Sep 22 23:53:53 mayday diald[205]: Connected to site 10.0.0.0
> Sep 22 23:56:05 mayday diald[205]: SIGHUP: modem got hung up on.
The connection failed
At this point it seems to be busy-looping (99% cpu)

I tried a kill -1 ...
> Sep 22 23:59:59 mayday diald[205]: SIGHUP: modem got hung up on.

I tried a kill -15 ...
> Sep 23 00:00:37 mayday diald[205]: SIGTERM. Termination request received.

I tried a kill -9 ...
... Yup that worked :-(

If I do the reset from ip-up there doesn't seem to be any problem so most
of the time that's what I do now.

I _guess_ that the modem port is giving an error or EOF to diald and
diald doesn't notice and retries.

When I try to add a directory to share in dc_gui, it goes away if I save
and re-open the profile. Similarly, once dc_gui opens the profile when
connecting to a hub, all the shares go away, so I am sharing nothing
(and therefore can't connect to most hubs). Please fix this, as I'd
prefer not having to install qt and valknut.

man diald(8) claims:
   -daemon
Don't run in daemon mode. This means that the the
standard input, standard output, and standard error
output are not closed, that all messages are logged
to the standard error as well as the syslog facil
ity, and that the diald program does not fork
itself into the background. This is mostly useful
when you are running the debugging mode and you
want to see what is happening.

In fact messages are logged only to syslog and not to standard error.
I have not found this an inconvenience, rather just confusing.
Perhaps the manual page only needs to be corrected.

diald 0.16.5-3 operates as documented.

# Write local and remote address if not already given
print "local 192.168.0.1\n" unless $nolocal;
print "remote 192.168.0.2\n" unless $noremote;

$nolocal/$noremote is set if a local/remote address is found in the ppp options
file. Some sites use these IP addresses for hosts on internal private
networks, however, and diald will cause a loss of connectivity to them by
assigning these addresses to the ethertap interface. This means that when the
connection is down, packets for 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 may be dropped on
the floor (if the connection is blocked) or cause the connection to come up (if
not).

diald should not interfere with internal network communication. Does the tap0
interface require an IP address at all to be useful? If not, it should have
none. If it does require an IP address, the user should be prompted for
reserved IP addresses that are not in use. debconf should make this a snap.

Package: diald
Version: 0.99.4-5
Severity: normal

diald seems to ignore any 'file' keyword in /etc/ppp/peers/*.

Case in point:

I have 2 ways of dialing up to my ISP from my main system:
- isdn TA adapter that understands AT commands (a modem as far as
  ppp is concerned)
- good old-fashioned modem

So I set up two entries in /etc/ppp/peers. Since they share most of
the ppp config (they basically only differ in the device and speed
chosen), I use the 'file /etc/ppp/peers/myisp-generic' to avoid
maintaining two copies.

PPP handles it fine.

But if I set up diald to use one of them, it misses out on the
shared part, since the "file" keyword is ignored.

As far as I can see, diald uses cvt-pppconfig (a perl program) to parse
/etc/ppp/peers/*. And this doesn't understand the "file" keyword.

A suggestion:

Why not use "pppd dryrun call $PROVIDER" and parse the output, rather
than parsing /etc/ppp/peers directly? This should seemlessly handle the
"file" keyword and resolve problems such as what-file-overrides-what
etc.

This should only have a couple of minor side effects:
- pppd writes the "dryrun" output to syslogd as well though.
- diald would be incompatible with early versions of pppd, as the
"dryrun" option was only introduced recently

[If I could do perl, you would have a patch too...]

tkmixer runs fine, and I believe I have a standard configuration on my

/etc/modprobe.d/oss-compat.conf: install snd-mixer modprobe
--ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS && { modprobe --quiet snd-mixer-oss ;
: ; }
I am not quite sure where it orginates from, but probably from
alsa-configuration.

Best regards

Hi...

diald can use either SLIP or ethertap devices. However, kernel developers
consider ethertap devices obsolete in the 2.4 kernel. It was replaced with
the Universal TUN/TAP driver. diald and its config scripts know nothing
about these forcing the user to build the obsolete ethertap module into
the 2.4 kernel.

Shouldn't diald and its scripts handle both for users of the 2.2 and 2.4
kernels?

After installing diald, I found diald was triggering pppd once every
2-3 minutes for no apparent reason. From /var/log/syslog, I saw diald
was triggered by ICMP packets.

Solution: there appears to be a typo in /etc/diald/standard.filter
line 146 -

ignore igmp any

should be -

ignore icmp any

As of version 0.99.4-7.2, something is seriously broken. Nothing ever
shows up in the connection queue, and the link won't go down
automatically. Also, capability settings for TCP command sockets seem to
be ignored. Manually switching the link still works.

For now, I've downgraded to -7.1, which works fine, and maked -7.2 as
forbidden.

aap 1.090-1 uses quilt patch system to apply patches instead of patching
in-place.

The way debian/rules uses quilt makes dpkg-buildpackage fail when
Python 2.6 is used.

Attached patch makes clean target depend on configure (to ensure that
all files are patched). It also moves ``quilt pop'' under calls to th ./app
so patched version is called.

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

  * Fix FTBFS.

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Your package fails to build with the upcoming GCC 4.4. Version 4.4
has not been released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order
to find errors and give people an advance warning.

GCC 4.4 cleaned up some more C++ headers. You always have to #include
headers directly and cannot rely for things to be included indirectly.

You can reproduce this problem with gcc-snapshot from unstable.

P.S. I wasn't able to build this package 'til the end, so it's
possible there are other issues not fixed by this patch.

Severity: serious

From my pbuilder build log:

make: *** [build-stamp] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: failure: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

Looks like a missing #include .
