Bug#443621: Lack of unicode

2009-05-05 Thread James Stanley
Hi,
I believe this bug is caused by the fact that multi-aterm has no unicode
support, and aptitude uses some unicode characters to make itself
prettier.

Bug#197469: comment on bug report

That's fine for printing messages. This bug though isn't about printing
messages.

It isn't even about how the days are written, on the left or on the
top.

Again, it's not about the language of the output. It's about deciding
on which day the week starts for the locale. Given that LC_TIME is
described as:

LC_TIME
changes the behavior of the strftime(3) function to display
the current time in a locally acceptable form; for example,
most of Europe uses a 24-hour clock versus the 12-hour clock
used in the United States.

... and that strftime only has:

%u The day of the week as a decimal, range 1 to 7, Monday being 1.
See also %w. (SU)

%w The day of the week as a decimal, range 0 to 6, Sunday being 0.
See also %u.

from that I guess it's not really obvious to claim that LC_TIME is
technically relevant here. Semantically it definitely is and I would
absolutely expect programs to calculate the start of the week with
querying LC_TIME and *not* LC_MESSAGES because it's not about the
written part, not about the localization of the text.

I still think you misread what this bug is about. :)

Package: gcal

If I type "gcal 12" I get the calendar for December of the current year.
Excellent. If it is November 2004 and I type "gcal 2", I get February
2004, but February 2005 is probably what I want.

So, I suggest that if a only a month is given, it be the next month of
that number, not the month of that number of the current year.

Why would you rather want February 2005 than February 2004? It's not
that uncommon to look up past dates. If one would switch to your
suggestion I'm sure the next bug report that pops up is about "but that
is just past month, why would I care about something 11 months in the
future!".

Given that it most propably will never be possible to get a concensus
on about wether people rather would like to always see into the future
months or wether people rather would like to always see into the past
months I guess the current approach with giving the month of the
_current year_ is a pretty sane default and somehow the approach with
least surprises.

Given that this would also be a change to the current behavior it's
extremely unlikely that it will get switched within Debian. If you feel
strongly about this change please take it up to upstream developers
directly at .

 Thanks. :)

Well, certainly this can be considered a bug; I've already fixed it for
the 5.1.2 release.

It sounds like a non-trivial change, but I'll think about it.

As an even dirtier workaround :-D, you can force the syntax highlighting to
the active document (to PHP, say) by executing the following MPSL snippet:

local l = mp.active(); l.syntax = mp.syntax.php;

You can execute MPSL code by hitting Escape (escape+escape, if under
curses), or from the Edit menu.

By the way, there are currently no JavaScript nor CSS syntax definitions.

> can you please give me an example for such a bad message?

If you want responses from the bug submitter you have to mail them, not
only send your message to the BTS.

It's not very hard to find such messages, just grep through po/gcal.pot
for non-ascii characters. Quick examples:

#: src/hd-data.c:470
msgid "Netherlands Antilles/Curaçao"
^

#: src/hd-data.c:515
msgid "Canada/Québec"
^

#: src/hd-data.c:529
msgid "Switzerland/Graubünden"
^

#: src/hd-data.c:531
msgid "Switzerland/Genève"
  ^

#: src/hd-data.c:534
msgid "Switzerland/Neuchâtel"
^

...

I'm not completely sure how to tackle that because proper writing of
the cities is definitely appreciated, even for english speaking people. :)
I hope the debian-i18n list has suggestions on how this can get
addressed.

Hi!

gcal -qAT -n displays All Souls' Day as a holiday for austria, but it
isn't. This gets one of our script confused which is using gcal for
holiday check, so it would be nice if you can get it removed. Please
don't forget to inform upstream of that fact, too.

gcal -qAT -N does *not* display it at all, and that's what we are using
since a long time, so I realize this is rather a non-bug.

few reasons. first is that bsdmainutils seems to be installing it into
/usr/games/ as a hack around the fact that sysvbanner already puts a
program in /usr/bin/banner. Second is that sysvbanner is an older
package than bsdmainutils.

Thanks,
Ryan

Bug#526847: sysvbanner: FTBFS: Missing build-depends

2009-05-05 Thread Ryan Niebur
Hi peter,

thanks for the patch. I just changed the O bug to an ITA, so I will
handle creating and getting uploaded a version that fixes this in the
next day or so.

Cheers,
Ryan
