Bug#419675: I agree, this needs a kernel code fix

2007-07-19 Thread Dominique Brazziel
I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive
yesterday, attached it in about 2 minutes, formatted 3
partitions (backup, opt and mymedia), moved the music
files (about 15 gig) from the internal drive in the
laptop to the Seagate, then commenced to do some
downloading with bittorrent. After awhile I noticed I
couldn't save any files on the mymedia partition and
saw it had been remounted read-only. That was
yesterday afternoon and I just figured out (after
numerous fsck's which deleted errors but then when
remounting the partition got error message that fsck
was required GGH) to delete and remake the
journal about an hour ago.

I've put both the hacks into /etc/rc.local and have my
fingers crossed but it would be nice (and right) to
have some restart code in the kernel.

That code posted above looks interesting, maybe I'll
see if I can adapt it to my system and give it a
whirl...

When wmacpi is launched without option, it only displays a black box in
the MonitorWharf and standalone.
With text mode option or -v -v -v -v I can see the good ACPI
informations.

Problem see with Afterstep 2.00.02-2 and there's no problem with
WindowMaker 0.91.0-7.

X drivers tested for nvidia board: vesa, nv and nvidia.

Package: wmacpi
Version: 2.0-1

when starting my window manager (afterstep), wmacpi is successfully started
and displays the correct battery status (running docked into the afterstep
wharf).
However, the GUI is not animated. I mean, the text that normally scrolls
through is not displayed, and the battery status remains the same.
If I hide the wharf and then unhide it, the updated status is displayed in
wmaci. If I do that often enough, I sometimes see a frozen part of the
scroll-message (e.g. "battery charging").

When I click on the GUI to display the status of the second battery, nothing
happens. Even after redisplaying the GUI manually, the click shows no
effect.

The same happens if I us the Gnome desktop environment and I start wmacpi
from a terminal. In that case, I just need to hide the GUI (e.g. by sliding
another window over it) and the GUI display will "refresh".

wmacpi worked very well before. The problem occured first after a debian
update about a month ago.

Thanks a lot.

Package: wmacpi
Version: 2.1-6

Wmacpi has a subtle bug which renders alot of its redundant-drawing-avoidance
logic pointless, and contributes significantly to it's excessive CPU usage.

The problem is on line 418 of wmacpi.c:
enum panel_states power = PS_NULL;

it should be:
static enum panel_states power = PS_NULL;

Every time set_power_panel() is called (every iteration of the main loop)
the power variable is initialized to PS_NULL. This causes the following
set_power_panel() logic to determine the power status has changed, the glyph is
then redrawn erroneously and thus the whole X window gets updated.

Adding the static prefix causes the power variable to be initialized once to
PS_NULL. Then the state of the power varible persists across calls, which is
clearly the intended design.

I didnt bother with a proper patch since it's literally one line changed.

I've cc'd the upstream maintainer as well.

Regards,
Vito Caputo
