2004-07-09 Thread sam_wells
Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you to ask if you would like to participate in a community
project we are running that aims to increase ICT usage among young people in
our surrounding area. We are currently focusing on linux because of the many
distributions and we were wandering if you would like us to use you software on
our machines. We view this as a good opportunity for the promotion of your
operating system and to get some feedback from our users. I would be delighted
if you would get back to me.

Many thanks,
Sam Wells

Our distribution is free for all. If you like to use it: Download it or
order it from one of our CD vendors and do what you like.

Details on how to download our CD images can be found at
http://www.debian.org/CD/ while you can find a list of CD vendors at

After apt-get upgrading distributed-net from Sarge (distributed-net version
2.8015.46-10), the package unpacks, but
then it hangs on "setting up distributed-net". Distributed-net version
2.8015.46-10 was running in the background
(as it usually is). I then manually killed distributed-net, and then apt-get
was able to install and set up
distributed-net just fine. So something needs to be added/fixed to properly
stop any running distributed-net
processes.

/etc/init.d/distributed-net fails to stop the client if run from a
non-interactive shell, e.g. if run from a cron job (where the client is
only scheduled to run overnight, for example), then the output of:
"/etc/init.d/distributed-net stop" will be "not running".

This appears to be because the test for running command uses stop-start-daemon
to check, which resides in /sbin which isn't in the path for
non-interactive shells.

So, a fix is to add:
PATH=/sbin:$PATH
...before the "case" statement in /etc/init.d/distributed-net

and a non-intrusive work-around is to change all calls to the script in
cron or at jobs to:
PATH=/sbin:$PATH /etc/init.d/distributed-net [start|stop]

I'd have thought that the first option would be less intrusive for all
debian users (since it doesn't require any special operation from
anyone) but I'm not sure of any security / policy implications.

When remove and purging with 'apt-get --purge remove distributed-net'
or 'dpkg --purge distributed-net' /etc/distributed-net.conf is not
removed. It should be. Other conffiles appear to be removed.

For distributed-net it might be more important than for many other
packages. Because people are often enthusiastic about donating spare
cycles this is often placed upon machines for only short periods of
time and then removed later when the machine is placed into other
service. At that time it is important to clean up these remnant
files. Sometimes other people mistakenly see these files in /etc and
assume the process is still active, even though it is not. Obviously
there is no hard connection between files in /etc and processes, so is
not necessarily reasonable thinking of people, but so it is.

Thanks
Bob Proulx
