Distribution
Sir/Madam, I am writing to you to ask if you would like to participate in a community project we are running that aims to increase ICT usage among young people in our surrounding area. We are currently focusing on linux because of the many distributions and we were wandering if you would like us to use you software on our machines. We view this as a good opportunity for the promotion of your operating system and to get some feedback from our users. I would be delighted if you would get back to me. Many thanks, Sam Wells - Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/

This appears to be because the test for running command uses stop-start-daemon to check, which resides in /sbin which isn't in the path for non-interactive shells. So, a fix is to add: PATH=/sbin:$PATH ...before the "case" statement in /etc/init.d/distributed-net and a non-intrusive work-around is to change all calls to the script in cron or at jobs to: PATH=/sbin:$PATH /etc/init.d/distributed-net [start|stop] I'd have thought that the first option would be less intrusive for all debian users (since it doesn't require any special operation from anyone) but I'm not sure of any security / policy implications. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux Apu 2.4.21.dsc-u10.apu2.120703 #1 Sun Jul 13 01:06:55 BST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB (ignored: LC_ALL set) Versions of packages distributed-net depends on: ii host 2331-9 utility for querying DNS servers ii libc6 2.3.1-17 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an -- no debconf information --- Received: (at 203305-close) by bugs.debian.org; 9 Jul 2004 14:19:32 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jul 09 07:19:32 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BiwDs-00062p-00; Fri, 09 Jul 2004 07:19:32 -0700 Received: from katie by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BiwBV-pz-00; Fri, 09 Jul 2004 10:17:05 -0400 From: Stephen Stafford <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.51 $ Subject: Bug#203305: fixed in distributed-net 2.9008.490-1 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, 09 Jul 2004 10:17:05 -0400 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-5.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,DATING, HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 3 Source: distributed-net Source-Version: 2.9008.490-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of distributed-net, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: distributed-net_2.9008.490-1.diff.gz to pool/non-free/d/distributed-net/distributed-net_2.9008.490-1.diff.gz distributed-net_2.9008.490-1.dsc to pool/non-free/d/distributed-net/distributed-net_2.9008.490-1.dsc distributed-net_2.9008.490-1_i386.deb to pool/non-free/d/distributed-net/distributed-net_2.9008.490-1_i386.deb distributed-net_2.9008.490.or

It should be. Other conffiles appear to be removed. For distributed-net it might be more important than for many other packages. Because people are often enthusiastic about donating spare cycles this is often placed upon machines for only short periods of time and then removed later when the machine is placed into other service. At that time it is important to clean up these remnant files. Sometimes other people mistakenly see these files in /etc and assume the process is still active, even though it is not. Obviously there is no hard connection between files in /etc and processes, so is not necessarily reasonable thinking of people, but so it is.
