Bug#237801: Found the problem

For some reason there wasn't any "auto lo" line in
/etc/network/interfaces, so the loopback interface wasn't being properly
configured. Since several of gnome's startup stuff involves connecting
to localhost this failed. 

Any reason why gnome uses loopback instead of PF_LOCAL sockets? At least
in linux these are supposed to be faster.
