When I set LC_CTYPE to an italian charset elm complains about the MIME
charset and delays its startup for 13 seconds, which is very annoying:

$ export LC_CTYPE=it_IT
$ elm
Elm: Unable to map it_IT locale (LC_CTYPE) to MIME charset
Using default (US-ASCII). Check /etc/elm-me+/elm.mimecharsets or

Problem with locale (system character set)! Elm ME+ will behave erratically.

The following patch fixes the bug:

Hello,

There are two problems ...

(1) The following man-files are misplaced. They should be installed
in `/usr/share/man/man1/' instead of `/usr/share/man/':

/usr/share/man/answer.n.gz
/usr/share/man/checkalias.n.gz
/usr/share/man/elm.n.gz
/usr/share/man/elmalias.n.gz
/usr/share/man/elmcharset.n.gz
/usr/share/man/elmterminal.n.gz
/usr/share/man/elmunidata.n.gz
/usr/share/man/fastmail.n.gz
/usr/share/man/frm.n.gz
/usr/share/man/listalias.n.gz
/usr/share/man/messages.n.gz
/usr/share/man/newalias.n.gz
/usr/share/man/newmail.n.gz
/usr/share/man/printmail.n.gz
/usr/share/man/readmsg.n.gz
/usr/share/man/wnewmail.n.gz

(2) These man files have an incorrect name. For example,
`elm.n.gz' should read `elm.1.gz'. In other words,
the suffix of filename should be `.1.gz' in place of
`.n.gz'.

Thank you for your packaging efforts.

Best regards,

Michael

I've noticed this in the current version in unstable. It works fine in
2.4pl25ME+73-2. When you quit or when you change folders, there are usually
questions like "Move read messages to "received" folder? (y/n)". Pressing y
or n would generate "Yes" or "No" strings at the "answer" spot. Since there
is usually some delay after that you may want to press some key again
expecting those Yes/No strings and causing Elm behave unexpectedly (you
would expect that Yes/No show up and then do what you asked it to).

If this is not very clear, I may try to rephrase it. :-)

I usually use Elm under xterm which along with new ncurses brings some
terminal problems, like Backspace doesn't work anymore - in Elm it works
occasionally.

 - Peter.

Hi,

An upcoming release of Debian policy, version 3.5.5.0, contains an amendment
which clarifies the way man pages need to be installed.

Until now, packages could install /usr/share/man/man1/foo.1.gz with 'foo,
bar \- programs to do something' in the NAME section and have no
corresponding symbolic link from bar.1.gz (policy suggested using a symbolic
link, but wasn't clear that it's required), and our man program happened to
magically figure it out for itself and display the right man page when you
typed 'man bar'. However, guaranteeing that this would work even when you've
recently installed some new packages has a serious performance impact on
man, as it frequently has to go and look through the filesystem to update
its database.

Before woody's base system is frozen, I intend to remove this "feature" from
man-db, so that its performance is consistent and acceptable for a
reasonable number of people. It isn't a standard feature even among the
various man page browsers in Debian, let alone in other Linux distributions,
so there should be no compatibility problems. However, your package seems to
rely on it, so this bug is being filed to let you know that the way some of
your man pages are installed needs to be improved in order to work properly
in woody. All you need to do, if you already have, say, foo(1) and expect
bar(1) to work as well, is install a symbolic link to foo.1.gz as bar.1.gz
(.so links and hard links are also OK, though symlinks are recommended).

Here's a list of man pages and the names that don't appear anywhere in the
filesystem:

  usr/share/man/man1/frm.1.gz: nfrm

If the list looks odd, please check man(7) to see if the man page is
formatted properly. This output was generated by way of mandb, so if it's
confused then users will be too; if it turns out that it's done the wrong
thing, please reassign this bug to man-db so that I can fix it. I might not
have caught symlinks that are created in the postinst (say, using
alternatives); if that's the case, please close this bug.

Please see bug #94995 and policy 3.5.5 section 13.1 for more information,
and feel free to contact me if you need help.

Thanks,

Sometime in the recent pst, fastmail stopped accepting input from stdin.
Before, something like "echo test | fastmail -s test - [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
used to work. With the current version, a mail with an empty body is
delivered.

Elm appears to search dirents under every component of the $MAIL path
with stat64. When some of these components have softlinks pointing into
an autofs-controlled areas (e.g. cdrom, or NFS mounts), the stat64
triggers autofs to launch these mounts. This certainly causes delays,
and may cause timeouts and unexpected behaviours of the rest of the

Here is the relevant part of a strace from the command

echo hola | elm ptb

where $MAIL has value /usr/spool/mail/ptb. Note the stat64's on
the other root directories, and subdirectories of /usr.

Problem with locale (system character set)! Elm ME+ will behave erratically.

"français" (as well as "french", which causes the same behaviour) is
an alias to "fr_FR.ISO-8859-1". OTOH using the "fr_FR.ISO-8859-1"
locale directly does not exhibit this problem.

see also 128027 for another man page problem -- which you'll need to apply
the fix for before you can type "man elm" to see the problem i'm
describing here.

the man page substition in doc/Makefile for the LIB path ends up including
the temporary install path used to build the binary .deb. for example,
"man elm" contains stuff such as:

   /root/elm/elm-me+-2.4pl25ME+95.dg1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/elm-me+/elm.rc
customized mailer parameters

/root/elm/elm-me+-2.4pl25ME+95.dg1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/elm-me+/elm.mimecharsets
locale to MIME charsets map
   ping information

/root/elm/elm-me+-2.4pl25ME+95.dg1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/elm-me+/elm.terminalinfo
display charset switching
   method for terminals
...

whereas it should be referring to just /lib/elm-me+/elm.rc, etc.

there's two problems here -- one is that the substitution in doc/Makefile
uses LIB which has the temp binary path prepended to it.

the other is that "./debian/rules clean" should remove the doc/*.subs
file.

the patch below fixes both problems. note that i didn't bother to include
the patch differences which would remove doc/*.subs since that would have
made the patch huge.

Bug#122274: elm-me+: newmail can't parse mailbox

2002-09-29 Thread Nathan A. Ferch
both 2.4pl25ME+99c-1 from incoming and 2.4pl25ME+95-3 from unstable
still produce the error.

one important detail i overlooked when i submitted this bug report is
that the mailbox i was monitoring was from procmail. i tested
2.4pl25ME+95-3 with procmail disabled and it didn't produced the
problem.

i'm using procmail 3.22-4.
