Back when Xaw3d and the "real" Xaw were compatible (ie. before XFree86 v. 4.x), Xaw3d was part of the "xaw wrappers" system where you could choose which Xaw variant to use per site configuration. When XFree86 4.x appeared, this compatibility broke, so Xaw3d is no longer a xaw wrapper, so packages that want to use it must now link with it explicitly at build time.
