Why the delay?

What delay? Because pysupport is not deprecated, using pysupport is not
a bug.

If you think pysupport *should* be deprecated, that case has yet to be
made AFAIK.

I'm curious why nobody has made the case. Are there disadvantages of
deprecating it right now (for Wheezy release)?

Can we please do so for Wheezy?

+1

What is the process for deprecating python-support? Who makes that decision?

Add a lintian warning saying that it is deprecated. Wait. File bugs on
all packages using it. Remove it and anything still depending on it.
The maintainer is responsible for declaring it is deprecated.

Personally I've always wondered why a Debian-specific helper should be
needed instead of python upstream behaving the way we wanted.

Lintian isn't normative though. We should only add a Lintian warning to
tell the packager of a *pre-existing* deprecation.

The deprecation itself isn't a matter of changing Lintian, but of
someone authoritative for Python policy saying that pysupport is
deprecated. Who makes that decision?

Those are not mutually exclusive :-) The helper is needed to make our
packages more sensible, while we continue to advocate for upstream
behaving the way we want.
