I think you can do that, but since it's isn't our default option (we usually keep just debian/ for those who don't know yet) it can confuse people working on this package during a BSP, transition or something like that. Well, there's no place to get the orig.tar.gz from. Maybe I can have a README commited to the json-py/ directory to mention this?
