installing etch on a PowerWave 604|120.
A diskette was created from this file from ftp.egr.msu.edu:80. debian/dists/testing/main/installer-powerpc/20051026/images/powerpc/floppy/boot.img The diskette was submitted to a PowerWave 604|120 which immediately ejected it and displayed the icon of a diskette marked with a cross. Is there a boot.img especially for such machine? I could not find it mentioned in the installation manual. installing etch on a PowerWave 604|120
Sven and others, sl> Try the daily builds, ... OK. The PowerWave 604|132 boots from the "new" diskette. The PowerWave 604|120 spits out the same diskette. I tried two diskettes. The 120 rejects both. Can this be another problem with the installer? If I install the system to a drive in the 132 and then move it to the 120, is the system likely to work there? Thanks, ... net-drivers.img
Has anyone succeeded in using the net-drivers.img for powerpc 2005-10-26? Several copies give me this message. Cannot read floppy, or not a driver floppy. Retry? The message returns with only a few milliseconds delay, suggesting a problem with reading or interpreting the diskette rather than a problem during or after accessing the ethernet adapter. boot.img and root.img are OK. installing Debian on an oldworld Mac
I've just read ten recent messages about support for boot floppies and conclude that I should not expect them to work soon. Currently, is there any way to install Debian on an oldworld Mac, other than by CD? Suggestion If the daily server could have a concise and obvious notice specifying whether the installer floppies actually work, that would be very helpful. Thanks, ... Re: installing Debian on an oldworld Mac.
Mon, 6 Mar 2006 Vinai Roopcha said, vr> BootX / Kernel / RAM Disk installer ... Yes, that works, up to where it searches for a *.iso. The mini.iso is on the boot drive and also on the target drive of the installation. Nevertheless the installer complains "... did not find an installer ISO image." After a full search, the installer comments "... it may be on a file system that could not be mounted." With an CF-ATA adapter, containing a Compact Flash card containing a FAT file system containing the mini.iso, connected to the ATA-PCI adapter, the system failed to pass the MacOS announcement. The installer and the Installation Manual both neglect to mention what file systems can mount. So is this a bug? Is there any way to make the mini.iso accessible to the installer? Otherwise this seems a dead end. Thanks,... Peter Easthope Upgrade your account today for increased storage; mail forwarding or POP enabled e-mail with automatic virus scanning. Installing Debian Woody base on an Oldworld Mac.
The Woody, diskette based, PPC installer works well up to "Install the Base System" via the network. I used the default source. http://http.us.debian.org/debian Several files are delivered; then a snag with a report such as, "Couldn't download libgdbmg1". In another attempt, "Couldn't download mailx". Etc. & etc. I have restarted "Install the Base System" at least 8 times with failure of a different file each time. Does anyone recognize this problem? Woody base wrecks video on Oldworld.
Finally the Woody base is installed on the old PowerWave 604. Perversely enough, the base installation desynced the video. The video card is an ATI Mach 64, PN 109-33200-10 & an SVGA monitor is connected. A picture of the screen is at this address. http://carnot.pathology.ubc.ca/DebianWoodyPPCvideo.jpg Does the base installation assume that an Apple monitor is connected? Any other ideas? Thanks,... re: Woody base wrecks video on Oldworld.
At Tue, 25 Apr 2006 01:44:16 -0800 I described a problem with video on the old PowerWave 604|120. All that was needed to solve this was a better monitor. For a reason I do not understand, the base installation needs a better monitor than the diskette based installer needs. Thanks,... libc6
Finally I've managed to upgrade the PowerWave 604|120, Woody -> Sarge -> Etch ... more or less. The current problem is with libc6. It appears to be stuck at Sarge and is not fully configured. quik
Hello PowerPC users, Does quik normallly give a menu at startup? On an old PowerWave 604|120 here there was only a black screen until the default Linux 2.2.20 started. Subsequently I added a 2.4.27 kernel and made it the default. Now the system fails to boot or doesn't progress far. The screen remains black. I need to edit /etc/quik.conf. Is there a rescue diskette with vi, similar to Tom's RtBt for the PC? Thanks,... Peter E.
