a kernel with new pata drivers.
Now linux is able to boot but with cdrom and macosx i've no this lucky.

it seems that something goes wrong with yaboot if you are not able to
see his first and second stage screen and, maybe, the kernel provided
didn't support your Powermac G5 first model's windfarm.
Have you checked if Apple has available an Openfirmware update/fix for
your model?

I've recently acquired a pmac G5 2x1.8 (november 2003) but i use it
with CRUX PPC 64bit anyway i can provide to you a working kernel
config if needed.

The only problem i encountered is that linux-2.6.34 isn'y able to
shutdown that machine. Linux-2.6.32 works fine.

mmh, maybe a good trick could be to use a crux-ppc iso to partition
the disk (you need to do it by hand using mac-fdisk as explained in

go forward to install your Debian.

i think isn't a good practice your cross posting because not every
ppc/yaboot user is a debian user too.
You should need to use at last yaboot-1.3.15rc (released 17/02/2009)

Try to boot with a different distro's boot iso (like Gentoo or Crux).
So you can understand if it's a problem related to the iso or the

you cannot overwrite but you can tune it.

a couple of days ago i saw the same machine (nice but very noisy)
running an up to date cruxppc 64bit.
The stock videocard was replaced by a FireGL V5600 and i can say that
gradient colors was correct but instead 3d was broken with an error
like this:
IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 2 0

Anyway the colors were correct thus i guess you only need to update your debian.

why don't you directly build them from sources?
I cannot test drmgr as my old machines don't support it but i'm able
to build these utilities on a cruxppc 64bit system
thus, i guess, you can do the same.

CRUXPPC handbook is enough detailed but, indeed, the Gentoo PPC64
handbook (10. Configuring the Bootloader) provides a very good
section about yaboot.conf settings.

you have to install librtas as needed dependency.
E.g. from my cruxppc 64bit system:

root@9114-275:/home/nello# ilenia -D powerpc-utils --all
librtas [installed]
ncurses [installed]
readline [installed]
sqlite3 [installed]
libservicelog [installed]
servicelog [installed]
zlib [installed]
sg3-utils [installed]
libvpd [installed]
lsvpd [installed]
ppc64-diag [installed]
powerpc-utils [installed]
