Hello all, I've been trying to configure X on a 14.1" iBook with an ATI Radeon M6 LY and I've been unsuccesful. I've installed kernel 2.4.20-pre11-ben0 and the dri-trunk debs. When I issue: modprobe agpgart insmod /usr/src/modules/drm-trunk/radeon.o startx the screen flickers slightly and then just sits there blank. After rebooting, my X log only shows 1 error: Cannot read V_BIOS (5) Where am I going wrong? Thanks Bill

scsi emulation
I'm getting the following errors with kernel 2.4.20-pre11-ben0: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 Consequently, I can't mount my DVD/CD-RW on sr0. I noticed a previous thread regarding changes to scsi emulation recently, but I've been unable to find a solution. Is there one? Thanks Bill
airport card on iBook2
Trying to connect my iBook2 running Debian to my Netgear MR314 access point. I did the following: Edited my /etc/network/interfaces to include iface eth1 inet dhcp wireless_essid "*" wireless_nick ** Then: modprobe airport modprobe orinoco modprobe hermes apt-get install wireless-tools Following this, I did ifup eth1 and got 7 DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 messages prior to eth1 going to sleep. iwconfig eth1 gives me: eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"*" Nickname:"**" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412GHz Access Point: 00:30:AB:1A:F5:6B Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3 Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:6465-626F-6F6B----00 Power Management:off Link Quality:49/92 Signal level:-46 dBm Noise level:-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:8 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 Am I missing some step somewhere? Here's my /etc/modutils/ide-scsi file now: alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi options ide-scsi hdb=ide-scsi Note, the options line was already in there. When I do #mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /cdrom, I get: mount: /dev/sr0 is not a valid block device. When I do, cdrecord -scanbus, I get: cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open 'dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver. I know I'm probably missing something obvious. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks. Recompile it as a module. -Brett Thanks for all the help everyone, that fixed the problem. I compiled the IDE CDROM support as a Module and compiled scsi-emulation into the kernel and it now works fine. I also removed the append="hdb=scsi hdb=ide-scsi hdb=scsi-ide" from yaboot.conf and everything still works great. > > >-- >To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] >with a subject of "unsubscribe". Guys, As both of your instructions (and a few others) proved invaluable in getting Debian onto my iBook2, I'd be more than willing to compile an amalgamated HOWTO with full acknowledgement of all original authors contributions. All original authors can review before it's posted anywhere if you like. Would this be of any value? There is no way to return to the console. The only way to access the machine is to login via ssh from a foreign host. I've installed it following the instructions on mij's page. I have tried out the combinations of two kernels and two versions of Michels X-server: - self compiled ben6-kernel - precompiled ben5-kernel - Michels X-server version 2002.12.05-4 - Michels X-server version 2003.07.02-2 The effect is allways the same. There must be a problem with the radeon driver, but I can't fix it. I haven't found any previous posts on this topic. You didn't look hard enough. ;) He's right. Try searching the archives for this thread: X config on 14 inch 700mhz ibook I had the same problem as you and this thread fixed it. Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' Make sure xfonts-base (or even better x-window-system-core) and xfs are installed (or uncomment the direct FontPaths in XF86Config-4). The black screen is because radeonfb fails to restore the display after the server aborts for some reason. And don't forget to install a Windowmanager.

Jérôme Marant wrote: Hi, I bought an iBook one year and a half ago, and I recently experienced some hardware failures. It seems that closing/opening the iBook managed to damage the video signal: I have sometimes problems with colors, some snow and there is sometimes no signal at all depending on the position of the screen. Has anyone experienced this before? It is easy to be repaired? Sounds like the Inverter Board Cable Assembly wire is eroding. It runs through the right hand hinge and can easily wear down with normal eveeryday use. I've replaced mine twice and reinforced the last replacement with a little electrical tape. You can see discussions in the Apple Support forums for your brand of iBook usually in the Usage or Vidoe forums. The cost of a replacement depends on where you buy it. Here's a sample: http://www.pbparts.com/shop/nic.html Thanks. -- Jérôme Marant

Depends on what you mean by easy? To replace this part, you need to disassemble the iBook almost completely, which can be a real pain. If you love disassembling hardware though, you'll have fun.
