I've tested this package on a PowerBook (Lombard series), and it gives similar symptoms to the older version of the XF68_FBDev. If I run without acceleration, everything works fine. If I run with acceleration it works a while, but then the entire server crashes. If I run Xpmac (from the LinuxPPC RPM) it works fine with acceleration, but it messes up my "font:VGA8x8" upon switching away from X. If I run XF68_FBDev from ftp://devel.linuxppc.org/users/trini/XFree86-3.3.5/ it seems to work with acceleration (hasn't crashed yet). Something isn't fully compatible with the debian patching and this machine. 3.3.5 _does_ work better than 3.3.3.1, because 3.3.3.1 _always_ crashed when it reinitialised the accel code when switching back from console to X. /Stefan

No, I'm saying the 3.3.5-1.1 works better than 3.3.3.1-10, however neither work as well as the 3.3.5 from Tom Rini (just stole the binary from his .rpm). > A no, i see you are speaking about Xpmac doing it better than XF68_FBDev, this > simply mean that the linuxppc guys have worked more on this, and that there > was > no change to the fbdev to fix this problem. I'm currently using the XF68_FBDev stolen from the .rpm mentioned above.

I'm afraid I managed to fool most people here. Your (Tom's that is) XF68_FBDev gives the same symptoms as the rest, now that I've managed to force it to occur. Forcing it is a simple 3 step method, involving netscape. 1. Start X 2. Start netscape 3. Switch to console _before_ netscape opens a window. It will now crash the X server on my Lombard if acceleration is active. I have no other machines capable of acceleration to test this on, so I don't know if it happens to others too. /Stefan

Did you already inform him? > > No. I don't really know who takes care of those mirrors Is it a known issue that the 2.6.0-test6 from the above source as of yesterday evening (CET) cannot reload the audio modules (neither alsa nor dmasound) once they've been unloaded? At least alsa also does not survive a sleepmode session, which means sound is dead after a snooze. $ sudo modprobe snd-powermac FATAL: Error inserting snd_powermac (/lib/modules/2.6.0-test6/kernel/sound/ppc/snd-powermac.ko): No such device $ dmesg at this point gives: ALSA sound/ppc/pmac.c:1092: pmac: can't request resource 0! no PMac soundchip found The first time the modules are loaded after boot, everything works fine, and sound is fully functional. It did work in a 2.6.0-test5 from rsync (source.mvista.com::linuxppc-2.5) by unloading and reloading alsa, but there sleepmode didn't work, so it wasn't very usable on an ibook. Right.. it's my usual ibook2 (late 2001, dual usb, 600MHz, M3 graphics). /Stefan Berndtsson

I've tried the slink-libc, and it gives me problems with the chown whenever I try to use tar (tried to recompile tar as well). The same thing works fine with both the 980705-snap (which I've built a deb from), and with the redhat glibc2.1.. I've also experienced problems with gzip (with dpkg -i on certain files), where the redhat gzip works fine (as does the redhat patches for gzip pasted on top of the debian-source (which some mods due to conflicts between diffs)). /Stefan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I'm currently working on getting a proper source/diff patch, and better compiled things (my deb's are done for testing at this point, so the method of creation is rather ugly, but I'm hoping to fix that soon). My first goal is to get all the packages in a base system done.. It takes about 5 hours for a build of glibc, so I want it working before I do a proper debian package.. This snap isn't using redhat's source at all, btw, although I plan on having a look at their patches to see if they've done anything I had to do manually to get this compiling, or if they have a better solution for doing it. > Where are you all living? If you have any ideas, they would be welcome. Unpacked base-powerpc.tar.gz Tried to boot on that partition. The kernel loads, the root-partition is mounted read-only. Now it stops printing a while, then gives me some errors regarding netmask and routing, and also telling me eth0 is BNC, then it stops. (the netmask, route and bnc is normal for the kernel I'm using). going for another approach, I chroot from a libc-1.99 system onto the base-partition. That works fine at first. However, when trying to install anything, I get: bash-2.01# dpkg -iGE adduser_3.8.deb tar: conffiles: Cannot chown to uid 0 gid 0: Function not implemented tar: control: Cannot chown to uid 0 gid 0: Function not implemented tar: .: Cannot chown to uid 0 gid 0: Function not implemented tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors dpkg-deb: subprocess tar returned error exit status 2 dpkg: error processing adduser_3.8.deb (--install): subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: adduser_3.8.deb bash-2.01# I get this on every package I've tried it with so far.. The kernel is the same one I'm using with the libc-1.99, which unfortunately still is a 2.1.24, because I haven't got 2.1.1xx to boot. Something I also can't understand, since a friend has it running on a rather identical machine. (diskspace and ram differ) Any help would be appreciated.. /Stefan

I wish it was that simple for me, but since 2.1.1xx (== any version) won't boot for me, I can't do that. And since I don't understand the kernel code enough to debug it properly, I can't really do much there either. (I've tried) Guess I'll have to wait.. Thanks anyway :) /Stefan
