Help:-- Beige G3 boot problem

2001-09-30 Thread Sridhar Kodela

hi all,
I am trying to install Debian PPC distribution on a Beige G3 (oldworld
mac) with 256MB RAM, 6GB IDE disk. I use the boot and root disks, finish
the install by selecting "Boot from hard disk" the script says install
Quik, then I execute the shell and issue the command
nvsetenv boot-device `ofpath /dev/hda6` where 6 is the partition on the
hard drive that has the root partition.
Then I reboot the system and the system will not boot, all I get is a
blinking floppy with a question mark on it.

what am i doing wrong? Please help.

thank you very much

Dear Mr Tillman and Mr Benson,
I am using the 2.2R3 cds. Here is the output of the dev /ls and
devalias (not all of it)..

dev / ls
   /[EMAIL PROTECTED] [grackle]
 /[EMAIL PROTECTED] [heathrow]

   /[EMAIL PROTECTED][heathrow-ata]
 /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0 [atapi-disk]
   /[EMAIL PROTECTED][heathrow-ata]
 /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0 [atapi-disk]

the output of devalias is..
 pci/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 mac-io /pci/mac-io
 ide0 /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ide/pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ata-int /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 ide1 /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

note that ofpath reads aliases, it prints the canonical path.

yes and in fact that broken ofpath is what is in potato.

the output of ofpath for /dev/hda6 is
 /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:6

now what do i need to give the arguments for the nvsetenv command?

I am from a wintel world and if this seems to be elementary please excuse
the newbie.

Thank you gentlemen for your help,
sincerely

Try

nvsetenv /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:0

when i tried this command it gave me variable not called error. I tried
nvsetenv boot-device /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:0 this did not give me
the error but when I reboot I am getting

 can't open: /pci/mac-io/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:0 error on a white screen (i
am guessing the OF screen?)

also do I need to setup another variable I found in some documentation on
the web that says boot-file?

thank you

If you get a boot: prompt, try typing Linux in response.

Re: Help:-- Beige G3 boot problem. Got around it,

2001-10-02 Thread Sridhar Kodela
I decided to try the Mac OS method. I partitioned the hard drive and put
Mac OS 9 on a 1GB partition. The installed BootX, copied the kernel into
system folder along with extensions and ramdisk.

system boots fine and i am able to do the base install and rebooted back to
BootX and can get into linux no problems (knock on wood).

Chris and Ethan thanks for your support in my attempts to get the system
going.

sincerely
