Well to be completely honest there is no oficial debian package... On

I think that it's mkfontdir problem (xbase-clients package). It should create
files fonts.alias in fonts directory and for some uknown to me reason it
doesn't...
Quick fix is to create /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias file with :

fixed -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1

This will allow You to run X'es

Try commenting out the LFS section of the configure script and recompiling.
Make sure that you remove the *.cache files in the directory - or better yet
- start from a fresh source tree.

Both the PPC and Sparc have problems with LFS on mysql - when I commented
out that section (it's a single paragraph in configure) it compiles and
starts just fine.

Hope that helps.

Alien maintainer is really fast. The above patch is included in v6.39 (and

WindowMaker 0.60 and signal 6

1999-06-28 Thread Robert Ramiega
  Hi all!
Today i've installed wmaker-0.60.0-2 package (using dselect) and now the only
method to switch between workspaces is by using mouse Button2 over Clip. When
i use keyboard shortcuts or little arrows on the Clip WindowMaker tells me
that it got signal 6 and offers to restarts itself
Is it WMaker bug or Debian bug? Can anyone confirm this?

After some digging i found the description of what needs to be patched. After
patching and recompiling it is even worse... WMaker gets signal 6 while
starting and thus is unusable =o(((

I filled bug report sometime ago. It's problem with some tool that helps to
build debian packages (i don't recall the name ATM). Fix is quite easy:
 cd /var/lib/dpkg/info
 vi +12 xcontrib.postinst

and put a space between ''

after that You can dpkg --configure xcontrib

if libcgi-perl causes so much trouble just download source version (using
debget f.ex) and build just that package on your current system. This should
overcome the problem (just change deb package version in the debian/changelog

OpenLDAPd on PPC

1999-10-13 Thread Robert Ramiega
  Hi!
I just got the slapd up'n'running on my Debian/GNU Linux PPC box.
I don;t know if any of other Debian/PPC users have ever tried to run it but
on my machine it couldn't start rumbling something about:
daemon.log.0:Oct 12 17:30:34 plukwa slapd[9042]: ldbm_db_errcall(): ==> illegal
flag specified to db_appinit
daemon.log.0:Oct 12 17:30:34 plukwa slapd[9042]: ldbm_initialize(): FATAL error
in db_appinit() : Invalid argument

I wanted to give LDAP a run so started digging on the website and debian
sources. At first i spotted that debian/rules contains this at the beginning:
ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),i386-linux)
ldbm_api=db
else
ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),m68k-linux)
ldbm_api=db
else
ldbm_api=db2
endif
endif

At the website there was a mention about various DB versions and how they
cooperate with OpenLDAP. There was a note that DB2 on non-Intel CPUs is by
default compiled without (or with limited i don;t recal right now) support to
threads. There was also a sugesstion about using DB1 or GDBM in that case. So
i changed above to:

ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),i386-linux)
ldbm_api=db
else
ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),m68k-linux)
ldbm_api=db
else
ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE),powerpc-linux)
ldbm_api=db
else

Both libproplist and wmaker 0.61 (and all deb's that got created from wmaker
source packages) are now available on
ftp://plukwa.pdi.net/pub/debian
WMaker has some problems with menu.hook file (wmaker can't find menu.hook
file and there is no Apps menu <>) I'll have look at it
tomorrow.
(both source packages compiled without a problem and i didn't change
anything in them)

missing sawmill sawmill-client sawmill-ui binary files (PowerPC only?)

Most probably this happend only with powerpc packages (but still shows that
there is something wrong with the way sawmill is build). Compilation of
sawmill, sawmill-client and sawmill-ui requiers imlib-dev package. In the
case thath package is absent on builder system package gets created without
those 3 files making it unusable.

This might affect only PowerPC port. Every time i tried to run gnuplot it
exits wit message "Can't load libvga.so shared library file" (or some such).
Yet gnuplot doesn't depend on svgalib package. Selfcompiled source package
doesn't have that problem (mostly because i don't have svgalib-dev installed)

I don;t think it would be the same. While i was building sawmill only 2 lisp
files refused to compile (sawmill-menu.jl and sawmill-uj.jl). They still
refused to compile even when i was building from within X. I just had a quick
look at the source files and there is a bunch of lisp files in lisp subdir
and they were compiled without manual intervention. I;ll try to check if this
is related to above mentioned 2 particular files or there is something more
in Makefile (anyway this sounds more like upstream source bug)

In similar situation i just edit debian/changelog prior to compiling and add
something like robert o jedi to package number. This way I know that this was
main package and it doesn't stop dselect/apt-get from upgrade'ing package

Please try to think about frozen not in relation of binary tree but in
relation of source tree. I did not check this but i'm sure that if you look
in the source tree of frozen you'll see correct version of enlightenment.
All You have to do is to wait till autobuilder will make powerpc.deb if You
don't want to wait please build it for yourself.
As of now all of us know, that there is inconsistency and noone wants/has
time to build/upload that particular package.

I believe that when frozen will change to stable there will be no such
situations as it is now with enlightenment. Frozen phase is just for solving
such situations.

THere is a version on libgc distributed togheter with w3m. It requires 2
small changes in Makefile and one in some header file and w3m compiles and
runs prefectly ok (i've been using it for days). I was meaning to write to

 Right away sir! =o)))

 Note to Mr Ukai:

Because libgc4-dev is not available for PowerPC architecture debian sources
of w3m fail to compile. I tried to use libgc5 but had no luck.
Both original and Debian sources come with some version of libgc (according
to docs it's a bit different from mainstream of libgc). When using libgc
included with source archive w3m compiles and runs fine. In the attachment
You'll find a diff agains w3m-1.06-2 debian sources that compiles on PPC. I
didn;t test this on any other arch but i believe that this diff wouldn't
change a bit on them.
 Hope this helps.

I've downloaded the "buggy" version and am using it right now and works
quite ok on CV64/3D. It has its quirks thou:
i'm using sawmill 0.24 and latest Gnome (Debian/woody) and when i choose to
log out from X it takes ages to do so (i don;t know how to describe it but
before Gnome displays "do you really want to log out" requester it shades the
desktop with rectangles that get smaller and smaller <> to draw this effect takes some minute(s)
while with XFree from Debian (3.3.6 ?) it is a matter of seconds)
While i type a message in GnomeICU, the letters appear way slower than i
type (and i didn't change GnomeICU in the meantime)

ps.
Next week i'll finally will get my BVision and i just can't wait to see X in
something more than 1024x768 8bpp =o

ummm i made my own definition of Monitor. And since CV64/3D in ZII mode is

I guess it's all caused by the optimisation turned on in Debian packages
(it's the same problem i reported lately in a private mail).
AFAIR this problem is caused by too good optimisation in GCC on PowerPC (at
least i think that one of PgSQL developers said something like that). Please
just take care that in each source package release PoerPC uses -O0 instead of
-O2 and all will be fine (6.5.3-14 source debs are ok, i've recompiled them
yesterday and had no problem so far)

Sorry it's not my sollution.. It's PgSQL developers. They know about it and
this is sollution suggested by them. It's in the template file of upstream
sources. It wasn't used on Debian (because on Debian we use powerpc and RH
and other use ppc). It's there since 6.5.1 or so

First of all i'm using Debian/PPC on APUS machine. Before installing phase2

http://hadess.free.fr/files/xf4. The tarballs extract themselves to

After installing debs all was fine until i tried to type anything in term.
The Keyboard layout was totally hosed. I didn't have Shift-keys,
Control,Alt, no NumPad. I started to fiddle around with XF86Config and
xkeycaps and managed to get back most of the missing keys. I couldn't make it
to use Shift keys (under xkeycaps when i pressed them corresponding keys on
screen didn't turn to yellow) It looked as those 2 keys were completely
ignored/non-existant.

Than i made just one thing: changed /etc/X11/Xserver to point to XFree86
from the tarball and all started to work again.
While using Xfree86 from debs i noticed this line in logfile:

(II) Defaulting to XFree86/Linux keycode handling.

Could this cause problems ? If so how can I (help) fix that ?

exim 3.16-3.1 and 3.16-4 (and libc6 2.1.3-13)

2000-10-02 Thread Robert Ramiega
  Hi!
 Just a quick note:
Yestradys night i've upgraded my system. I saw that there is exim-3.16_3.1
(and thou i knew it was there to fix incompatibilites with libc 2.1.94 i
didn't expect it to break). This was a BIG mistake. I ended up without MTA
for more that 15 hours (exim seg faulted when trying to enter daemon mode). I
recompiled both 3.1 and 4 package fro sources to no avail. After some
twidling i got my ystem to accept messages (exim was running from inetd) but
couldn't sent messages out (exim -q crashed with signal 11).

Thankfully i found some lagged debian mirror that stil had exim-3.16_3.deb

I just wonder how did exim-3.16_3.1.deb slip out? Was it compiled against
libc6 2.1.94? Or libc6 2.1.3? (to say it loud and clear: i don;t blame anyone
for my problems! I should hold exim since i knew it was meant for libc6
package that is not available for ppc at that moment; i'm just curious =o))

(is the build daemon running again?)

I guess my wording is not to good (sorry English is not my native language).
Anyway i *don't* have libc6 2.1.94 installed (two days ago it was not
available) all i did was upgraded exim to 3.16-3.1 (there were some other
packages upgraded; unfortunately i don't recall which ones). I saw thread on
debian-devel on libc6 upgrades and on Intel box i simply put those packages
on hold. On my powerpc box i let dselect upgrade exim as i didn't suspect any
problems.
When i tried to run exim in daemon mode it simply segfaulted. When i put it
in inetd it started to receive messages but was crashing while processing the
queue.
All this was gone when i switched to exim 3.16-3.

2.1.3-13 is in security.d.o and generally You are correct (this time i'll
wait till some of You install latest glibc and what came out of it =o))

I don't know if that helps (i don't have powermac) but on Intel boxes it
helps when You
make /dev/mouse point to /dev/gpm-data
  or
put /dev/gpm-data in place of /dev/mouse in Xpmac config
In both cases You might need to fiddle with mouse protocol settings

You don't need to hold'em (unless it's fully automatic which is not good
thing in unstable i think). Just inspect what dselect says and eventually
hold libc6 package (and all that depends). I've done it on one of i386 boxes

glibc2.2, gcc and php4

2000-11-09 Thread Robert Ramiega
  Hi!
I see that libc6-2.1.96 made it to deb repository. Did anyone had some
problems with it (and exim) ?
I also noticed that gcc is still at "potato" version. I remeber seeing on
some other Debian ML that upgrade of libc6 should go with upgrade of gcc.
Is that true or should i rather wait for buildd to rebuild gcc ?

  And one more thing:
Does anyone use PHP4.0.3pl1 on powerpc ? (i tried to compile source debs
but i couldn't get it to run either as module <> or
  as cgi <>)

Try this trick (but should get things done):
put exit 0 just after #! line in /etc/init.d/postgresql (i assume that
preremoval script is using it to start postmaster)
another way might be to have a look at /var/lib/dpkg/info/postgresql.*rm
and see what they are trying to do and help them in some way (like
commenting out those troublesome line)

This might not be the smart way but should get things done.

[robert@plukwa.pdi.net: gmp2 debian (?) package]

1999-02-05 Thread Robert Ramiega
  Hi!
Originaly i've sent this message to ML about Linux PPC for PowerPC accel
cards for Amiga. I'm using Amiga 1200 with BlizzardPPC 603e+ turbo card
([EMAIL PROTECTED])
 Thanks for any comments

Subject: gmp2 debian (?) package
X-Mailer: Mutt 0.94.12i

  Hi!
So after hard fight i have my Amiga running Debian GNU/Linux =o))
 Now to the subject:
In my work i need to have working ssh. ssh need gmp2 package (i believe it's
the same on RH also). I'v got gmp2_2.0.2-6_powerpc.deb from Polish mirror
(ftp.task.gda.pl). It installed ok. After that i tried to install
ssh-1.2.26-1.2 (this one was dl'ed either from ftp.task.gda.pl or
sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk). Install failed because of unresolved symbol in
libgmp2.so.2 (this symbol was mpn_add_n). At first i blamed this to upgrade
of libc6 but soon i realised that it's gmp2 fault. I downloaded binary
package and tried to recompile. This also failed.
The problem was syntax in asm files in gmp2-2.0.2/mpn/powerpc32. As i don;t
know assembler i took C files from generic and i got working gmp2 package.
I don't know if it is deb fault (badly created) or is this gmp2 fault (this
might as well be some incomatibility in egcs/binutils) What i'm asking is
this: could someone try installing gmp2 and ssh on RH and see if it works ?
(if it's gmp2 it'll fail during generation of server ssh-key). Also someone
else with Debian could try this?
I don't have the time now to inspect gmp to see if it would behave any
different on 604 (there is subdir gmp2-2.0.2/mpn/powerpc64 with quite
different contents)

 TIA

- End forwarded message -

Just one question (unrelated to above)
I'd like to install Netscape (tried 4.07) but it needs libstdc++2.8 (i;ve

all packages i made so far (msql-2.0.7, pgp*, mutt-i and some others)
'My' debs are somewhat crippled as i'm yet to read Debian Developers Guide
and some such (i'll print it i'll have lots of time during flight =o)) and
they might have some weird info stuffed in debian related files (most of them
are simple recompile of available debian sources; msql-2.0.7 is an exception
- available debian source is at 2.0.3

Until Peter and I will think out some way to keep our archives in sync i'll
download manually new packages (or maybe someone knows of any package that
will do two way mirroring?)

Just get debian sources and make packages by Yourself (this is not arch
dependant packacge i suppose it is just set of Perl pod files or smething like
that)

 Have a look at ftp://plukwa.pdi.net/pub/debian-NONUS

Yes You are 100% right =o)

Well i was also trying to suggest to see if those packages are in binary-all
dir (normally ther should be a link from binary-arch but it might be missing)

Yep. Backbone i'm connected to is connected to TeleGlobe in USA. After Peter
(who is hosting valinor.nws.net) will give me account there i'll upload them
to his site (so anyone can choose the fastest). BTW if someone from developers
of Debian/PPC has anything against 'my' packages i;ll remove them

I;m just browsing throu the docs about making packages and ihave one question:
In the debs there is filed called maintainer. Am i correct in thinking that
this point to *source* maintaner?

umm probably somewhere at the faar end of autobuilder queue =o(
If You need it badly just grab source package and do it Yourself, sorry

 No prob.
 I've manually synced valinor.nws.net and plukwa.pdi.net. I don't think i can
put debian-nonus packages there as it's located in States (or am i wrong?). I
know that Poland is not the best place for downloading from around the world
so maybe someone has some spare place on some server outside US ?

I believe You are trying to install X from debs on ftp.debian.org and
mirrors. I think they are not working properly. Get 3.3.3.1-0.3 from
valinor.nws.net:/pub/debian , plukwa.pdi.net:/pub/debian or
sunsite.auc.dk:/projects/apus/DEB-APUS

It doesn't matter that much how good is Your connection from my point of view

I believe that Germany generally has good international conectivity so if You
could be so kind to setup a mirror (either perl one or by using fmirror) that
wooudl be great (sorry but on Sunday morning i'm flying to Clevelenad,US and
have a few things to clear before i leave). I think that on Monday evening i
should be back on Net (but still a few miles away from plukwa) and at that
time i'll be able to assist You.

If You haven't change them for a week or so than they are also available on
valinor.nws.net and plukwa.pdi.net (use ftp rather than www)
