current d-i cd won't boot on G3

2004-08-16 Thread Kilian Krause
Hi,

i've tried today's daily build of the powerpc netinstaller cd. This is a
G3 powerpc and i can't make it boot the cd by any means:
- pressing 'c' upon boot
- loading the OpenFirmware with the Systemdisk-Tool from the d-i install
guide and from there going "boot cd:,\install\yaboot" or going "boot
hd:6,yaboot" after having copied the files from CD to the harddisk.
- Pressing the Apple-Alt-Shift-Delete (or what else is "Option" supposed
to be if not "Alt"?)
- trying ide0: and ide1: will not be taken by OpenFirmware

All of those leave me with a system booting MacOS 9.2. The OpenFirmware
is 2.0f1 (yes, i read it was buggy, therefore i used the DiskSelector
tool as descibed - or so i hope i did).

Any ideas how to get the CD booted are welcome. Thanks!

Hi Clive,

Thanks! that did the trick. Maybe it should be added to the d-i manual
how to tell what's "OldWorld" and what's "NewWorld" mac. I thought i had
a NewWorld one for some reason (well, just wildly guessing actually).

Hi,

moreover, what's the reason, BootX can't be shipped on the CD?

Hi Brad,

thanks for the insight. In that case, why isn't that list shipped with
the d-i docs? Or is it and i was just too blind to see it?
Could there be a mini-tool or a script telling? Like you have a small
prog on the CD which you start and that would read "Your mac is
oldworld, use BootX"..

Hi again,

ok, here's the next problem. Now i have managed to get past BootX, even
past d-i, except that it failed at quix installation. So i thought, who
cares, i'll go for BootX with my kernel and a proper root= setting.. Yet
when i launch BootX with root=/dev/hda8 or
root=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part8 both render me with a kernel
panic "couldn't find root"...

Any hints how to get past that?

ok, i'll try to copy the initrd.gz alongside and supply the
root=/dev/hda8 on the given commandline.

From what the docs tell, you cannot write to HFS+, so when reinstalling,
make sure that you initialize the harddisk with HFS instead of HFS+.

I'll let you know once i'm booted to the sys *g*

Hi Clive,

ok, so here's how it goes:
use the BootX with the kernel from the installed system, supply the
initrd of the booted system and put a root=... as commandline arg.

That way i could boot the system just fine. Yet it seems there's no hfs
support in the d-i kernel 2.6.7... At least i couldn't mount the HFS
partition.

But at least i have some system up and running now.. ;)

nope, i have gone with the 2.6.7 and its initrd.img..

I'll file the installation report later.. but the important things are
already listed as bugs for d-i (missing BootX, no quix installer
possible, no docs how to identify oldworld mac).. At least a rough check
on the bts looked like that.
