You may want to look at:

Welcome to Linux on Power wiki!
http://oss.gonicus.de/openpower/index.php/Main_Page
( not specifically debian, but has references to debian)

Also:
penguinppc.org
http://www.linuxppc64.org/
(again, not specifically debian, but lots of useful info)

To start:

give the cdrom to the partition you are installing it on.
Boot from the CD. It worked for me on a p690. It also worked on a 520.

Probably best to ask more specific questions on this list.

Please explain the "obvious reasons"

What kind of help do you need?

mysql 64 bit -- where, how, who?

2008-10-21 Thread Jean Robertson
Hello,

Is there some way to take advantage of the huge amounts of memory on POWER5
systems with mysql?

Should I build a 64-bit version?

Is there some roadmap of how to do that on an etch system that I can read
somewhere?

debian on power5 (570)

2005-09-15 Thread Jean Robertson
Helo,

I have almost succeeded getting debian on an IBM power5 (570).

I struggled with yaboot, got that working.

Now I have not yet found a "standard" kernel to boot without immediately
crashing.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

netboot and install of IBM power5 box

2005-12-19 Thread Jean Robertson
Hello,

I do not seem to be looking in the right place for instructions to netboot an
power5 machine.

Current etch installer files
under
.../debian/dists/etch/main/installer-powerpc/20051026/images/powerpc64/netboot64
include a few files:

initrd.gz
mini.iso
vmlinux

I do not know what to do with these files.

I have set up the bootp server and the tftpserver.

I have tried to boot the vmlinux image, that does not work.

I have looked inside the mini.iso, pulled out the kernel, initrd, yaboot files
and have succeeded in getting the tftp server to "boot" the yaboot binary,
which promptly looks for yaboot.conf under /etc (not where it will find it).

Can someone give me a clue? (point me in a direction whatever)

Thanks,

Jean

lenny installer fails "ramdisk: incomplete write"

2010-02-04 Thread Jean Robertson
Hello,

The lenny installer fails on an IBM p55A 9133-55A

This is a power5 machine.

This is a partition inside the box.

I am trying to install from a CD.

It boots the CD, give me a choice of installs, I type install64 and then after
booting, complains that it cannot mount the root filesystem with the
following error:

RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 != 32768) 10485760

This does not happen with etch.

The etch CD boots up just fine and starts into the installation dialogue.

I would like to avoid installing etch and then doing a dist-upgrade to lenny.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks,

Jean
