Have you verified local loopback is up? It seems gnome needs a 
connected lo. I had that same problem and after configuring lo 
everything went fine.

Yes, but on a 2.6.5 benh kernel. Not even tried on a 2.4.

I remember I just followed the README instructions inside the Berlios 
driver file at76c503-0.11.tar.gz and had no problem.

I use Debian testing.

It is an apt-get bug very easy to resolve. Google is our friend :-)
