help with IBM powerpc Model 40P RS6K machine

1999-08-19 Thread James D. Freels

I have installed debian/linux on several Intel and one Alpha machine.
We no have an IBM Model 40P ppc machine that we would like to
investigate with Debian/LInux before trying linuxppc or yellowdog. I
have found the powerpc subtree within the potato/unstable tree.
However, I cannot find anything specific on boot, root, driver, and
rescue diskettes for this machine. Can I use one of the others
(powermac, prep, chrp, etc.). Also is there a documentation effort
started for these machines we could use to get started. I believe
once I have the system booted with the rescue diskette, I could go
from there (found the base diskettes in the common subdirectory).

Ok. Thanks for the info. In my ramblings through all the web pages
on linux-ppc, I seem to remember a cross-compile from x86 to ppc howto
somewhere. Since I do build kernels for x86 and alpha frequently, I
would feel it an interesting task to tackle. Could you point me to
that web page that gives instructions on how to do this.

Thanks for your info on this...

Re: specific to Hartmut Kuptein

1999-08-23 Thread James D. Freels
I just obtained the latest 2.2.12 kernel images from

ftp://ftp.ppc.kernel.org/pub/linuxppc/kernel-images/v2.2.12-990820/

and tried both prep and chrp on this machine. They both had the same
net result (hung the machine on what appears as a graphics error, but
don't really know). However, the prep diskette seemed to be read by
the boot-up process for a much longer period of time which may imply
that it is the correct machine type. Just what does a chrp boot image
on the AIX CD really mean anyway?

Re: RS6000

Which one of these kernel-image binaries do you think would work best
with an IBM-powerpc 601 chip, model 40p 7020 machine? I would like to
not try all, but I could if I have to. I have tried unsuccessfully to
create the cross-compile platform from the Intel side.

How do you get to the OF prompt on machines that do not support the F8
function key to do so???

help with Debian/PPC for IBM-7030-3CT

2004-02-24 Thread James D. Freels
Hello Debian-PPC users:

I have an older IBM RS6000 that I can play with and try to install
Debian on. It is a model 7030-3CT and currently is running AIX. I
would like to experiment with Linux on this machine.

1. Can this be done ?

2. Where is the best source of information to get me started (I
currently maintain several i386 and Alpha machines using Debian).

3. Does this make sense or should I just send this machine on it's way
(still runs fine).
