reading linux from MacOs

2001-07-11 Thread Frank Escher
two things:

any mac os can´t see by now your linux disk/partitions. maybe never.

you should update for os 9.1, because earlier version are lightly buggy.

if you want to see/work on/change files of any type between os 9.x and
linux, make a drive/partition pc dos compatible (be warned not too big,
it depends on what os you use, range from 256 mb up to 1,5 gb) a good
value is 512 mb and is big enough for file transfer. put the driver for
dos/fat file system into your kernel, or load it if you need it. thats
it. both system can write on this drive/partition without any risk of
your data, and both system can see it.

thanks

Re: [OT] Network file sharing

2001-07-13 Thread Frank Escher
with netatalk and apple talk installed, every mac can see a linux and a windows
machine, because in the standard settings of tcp/ip under mac os (regardles
which
version you use after 7.1) you have to go and switch the usermode to advanced or
admin then you have the option button, hit it and you see tcp on demand (i
think) is
marked, remove it and you will never connect with apple talk.

Re: Ibook

hi,

this is ok, because the new os creates a hfs + (extended) format. you have to
create a hfs with the drive utility from apple.

I see only a chance, if you take out your drive. If you have an apple center
or dealer near you, maybe he will/can help
you.

This is gambling, because you can not surely say what they do. I know this
for sure:
Out of ten damaged i- or powerbooks there where 8 with a blank new system on
it
but there where nothing with the drives, just different problems.
I was working in an apple center in germany and you do the best if you copy
your files,
if you can.

I had this problem with my APUS-Clone too. The CD-booting and the booting
after
creating the disks brought the same failure

But, i found a way to install from CD, to do this needs a little work for
you. If you
interested i can mail you pictures what to do and everthing is fine (< 5
minutes under
MacOS).

Mail to my personal account and i will give it to you, but i do not have an
account
so it can take one or two days, sorry for this.

Hi,

on APUS 3000 Clone (PPC/ Performa 6400) it work fine. I do not know
about your Installation, but with Debian 3.x for PPC you have to choose
the fbdev-server, this is described well in the "howto installation" for
PPC.
Also the problem with the single button on your mouse.

You may only install a driver on the first partition without erase the
entire drive, there is a option "install driver". But only if DriveSetup
can see the first partition.

Do not believe on that test.

Again, i´m working with MacTestPro and that program is not much usefull, But the
memory test work very good. if there is a defective ram it would be located, If
you use the long term memory test, And this will take severall hours depending
on your machine and ram.
That program is used from AASP Dealers, that means you can´t buy it.

Re: HFS Plus on Linux ?

2001-09-12 Thread Frank Escher
Hi,

i had the same problem like you, but i wouldn´t have hfs or hfs+ under all
costs, included
their restrictions. I helped myself out with this:
Depending on your MacOS you can create a 256MB - 1.500MB (? not sure about
bigger than 1.200MB) DOS formatted Partition. Both systems can read and
write, and nothing happens bad to your datas. This work fine for me, no for 4
months.

Hi,

i had the same problems with booting, but they work.

I burned the cd´s with toast. it is an image, that means, i didn´t
change anything.
But i´m not sure to made anything right with the boot procedure (with
"of" i didn´t tried it), there
is a system folder on the cd, but is unusable for booting with the "c"
