Debain and kernel adjustments (beginner)
I am attempting to run Debian (either woody or sarge) on an old Umax S900 (mac clone equivalent to about a 9600). My problem lies in the graphics card. It is an old ix Micro TwinTurbo 2mb card that Linux kernels don't support or so I've been told. I was able to find a few websites that mentioned altered kernels or drivers and source code but some of it was for old kernels (2.1.4) and it's all way over my head. Really I'm just a linux newbie that wants to get some audio software that I've heard of running. Can anyone give me a hand in some really easy to understand language (or possibly do some source code compiling for me?). Thanks. -Eric Hedekar
RE: Can't get Kernel and intrid to start sarge installer
Hi rick, thanks for the response however I attempted a few different kernel-boot options as I'm not entirely sure what my monitor rate or bit depth is, however none worked. I'm running a Twin Turbo graphics card hooked up to a PC 15inch ADI micro scan monitor. Any more help would be great. This is about the fourth time posting to this list but you are the first to respond. For example, I have a beige G3 minitower with an "ATI Mach64" video card with a 14-inch monitor. I use video=atyfb:vmode:13,cmode:16 which sets color-depth to 16-bits, and video mode to 832 x 624 @ 75 Hz. What kind of video card does your S900 have? Enjoy! how do I get a Sid package on a Woody system?
I've been wanting to get AMSN messenger (http://amsn.sourceforge.net/) running on my woody system however the .deb package is only available throught the Sid package list. I don't know how to program or compile from source code and when I attempt to install the package manually I get stuck in dependency hell. Is there any way to alter the apt-get package list so as to be able to get this program? Thanks. -Eric
debootstrap exited abnormally (base installation error)
I'm attempting to install Woody on an Umax S900 (oldworld mac clone) and during the base system install step of the install no matter what I do, I end up with the error at the end: debootstrap exited abnormally with only one option below that - continue. However the word 'continue' is poor gramar as it should rather state 'go back and do it again and get the same result'. Can anyone help? I am faced with this blue screen of death here that I was told Linux didn't have. Please help. -Eric Hedekar
Pre-Beginner's post (convince me)
Hi, I'm completely new to linux and I'm trying to bring some sense of clarity to it all. I want to run a dual boot system with OS9 and Linux on my Umax S900 (oldworld mac clone). The main purpose of my work on the computer is audio applications however I may/will want to setup a network and/or computer farm that involves old and new world macs and PC machines. What I'm wondering is which distribution of Linux to install. I realize that to each their own, but due to the overwhelming technical documentation and the lack of spare time that I have lying around I would like some help. Can someone point out the best reasons to go with say YellowDog, Mandrake, Gentoo, or Debian? What are the faults of each of these? I realize that pretty much everyone on this list will be running Debian and to tell the truth that's the one I'm favoring despite the seriously technical installation process, but could you please attempt to be unbiased if at all possible. Or if you know of a site that compares Distros that is kept up to date that would be much apreciated as well. Thanks. -Eric
Pre-install partitions & dual boot
Hi there, I just recently had my Mac OS9.1 crash on me and my 2gig hard drive is no longer bootable. After some research I've been told to format the drive and reinstall. Seeing however that I've already gotten my friend to mail me a new 9.1gig hard drive ready to boot OS9.1 and the fact that I've wanted to insatll Linux for some time now, I see this as a devine sign. What I want to have once I finish the install is a fully working copy of Debian (I've already downloaded and burnt Woody to CD) on the current 2gig HD. However I also want it pre-configured (if this is posible) so that when the 9.1gig Mac OS arrives I can dual boot. I realize I may have to wait until that arrives before I configure this. I guess I should mention that I'm running an Umax S900 with a G3 upgrade card, so I'll be using the oldworld boot system. What I'm basically asking then is: A)Is it possible to setup the dual boot paramaters without having the second drive? and B)Should I partition the 2gig in any special manner before install? I apologize now if this info is in the howtos but I thought that such an unusual case probably wouldn't be covered in the standard howtos so I haven't looked yet. Thanks. -Eric
Installing Woody
I've attempted to install Woody about three times now on my Umax S900 (oldworld mac). I can't figure out how to configure the install for the 2.4 kernel rather than the 2.2 and when it does run the 2.2 I can't get beyond the command line state (I'd like to run GNOME). I'm new to the whole Linux thing so forgive any silly questions. I'm pretty sure that when I'm configuring the Xwindows server I'm messing up because when I type startx I get an error saying it can't find my monitor. I've got a twin turbo graphics card that came with the comp in there and I'm using a 15" PC monitor. Also, as soon as I leave bootX and go into linux the screen jitters constantly by about 1 pixel. Also, is the standard Mac ADB mouse (plugged in through the keyboard) a serial port mouse? It asks me to define this in the Xwindows setup and I don't see ADB as a choice there. Lastly, I've read about five different installation manuals for this release and nearly every one claims that I should go a different route for the package install (taskel, dpakage, or apt-get [sorry if I spelled those wrong]). What would you reccommend for someone who just wants to get a desktop system up and running? Thanks. -Eric
startx problems on Umax S900
On about the last seven installs of woody that I've done on my Umax S900 I have been unsuccsessfull in starting the x-window-system. The startx command consistently returns the error (the following is just the last few lines of text given to me, not the whole log file): (II) Module xaa: vendor="The Xfree86 Project" compiled for 4.1.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 (==) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp FBIOPUT_USCREENINFO: Invalid argument Fatal server error: AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0 Any ideas? I'm certain that I'm setting up the busID properly as the lspci command says my graphics card (a twin turbo) is in PCI:00:0d:00 and according to my understanding of hexadecimal that would translate to PCI:00:13:00 right. It looks like I may be incorrect in choosing 24 bit graphics though? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Eric
