Lenny on Imac G5 no windfarm module
Greetings, I just installed Debian/Lenny on an Imac G5 (rev A). The install went fine (2.6.18 kernel) and the thermal control module was loaded (the windfarm module). After installing the base system and some packages I restarted the machine, which booted a 2.6.21-ppc64 kernel. Most things appear to work, however the kernel/drivers/macintosh/ directory is missing form the pre-installed kernel modules. This is somewhat of a let down- without the windfarm module the computer goes into vacuum cleaner mode. Is there any way that I can get a kernel with these modules? Could it be as simple as upgrading to Sid ? Thanks in advance for any tips! Dylan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

video offset on ImacG5 (sid)
Hi, Just upgraded to Sid and have working ImacG5! There are a couple of minor issues remaining: 1. the video is offset in the horizontal direction, meaning the far right-hand side of the display is 'wrapped' around to the left-hand side. about 10-20 pixels. I have a revision A Imac, with the NVidia video card. Could this be related to a ModeLine issue in the xorg.conf file ? Cheers, Dylan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: useful links & one caveat: apt over ssh
howdy-- i would recomend using the newest kernel, Etsushi Kato's mach_kernel + Debian 3.0 installer, to format a partition, and then install the base system via CD or ftp. (i usually use the base install CD, and then upon rebooting install the rest via ftp). i am using a kernel that is one revision older than Estushi's latest, and it seems to work fine: sound, net, video, and the like. the newest one seems to have a few more ethernet drivers built-into it. all in all, i would recomend woody over all other distro's for installing onto an old world pmac. not only is the install farily easy once your figure it out (despite the prevailient complaints...) and the apt based package management makes life oh so easy. there is only one problem that i have been having with woody.. perhaps somone can figure this out... 'apt-get install [package]' seems to alwasy die when run from either an ssh session, or over a consol connected via the serial port. the only time that i am able to use 'apt-get install [package] over ssh is when i am also logged into the main consol. if anyone knows what this is casued by, it would surely save a lot of hassel! i will add your notes tonight if that is ok with you. dylan Clive Menzies said at ÒRe: useful linksÓ. for configuring the services that run in yourt current runlevel, i would recomend 'rcconf'. you might have to apt-get it, but it is a nice little cmnd line app for sorting out the various services!! just my 2cents dylan Michel Dänzer said at ÒRe: Frozen cursor after logout; CLI escapeÓ. Re: optimizing my debian
i would STRONGLY recomend more ram at least 128mb.. that has always made my life easier when i go to use X.. also, i would use a different WM... my favorites are fluxbox, blackbox, enlightenment, and icewm... fluxbox is extra fast, and if you can enable 2d acceleration (see past posts on how to do this) that would help a lot as well... i have an 8500 with 192mb ram, and X works quite nicely using fluxbox as my WM, and ETERM as my terminal of choice good luck dylan > Hello all, > > I have a PowerPC, 64 RAM, with woody updated. poerbook can only sleep once
Greetings, I have been using Sarge on my powerbook G3 Mainstreet (upgraded to a 500mhz G4 processor), and have been generally very happy with it. I am using the pbbuttonsd to manage the battery, display, sound, and powersaving features of the machine. I can make the machine sleep by pressing the power key once, and then pressing any other key. Waking the machine is normal. Upon waking I have to restart the PCMCIA system (any ideas on how to do this automatically?). However! Pressing the power button will only put the machine to sleep once per reboot cycle! I have tried restarting pbbuttonsd, but this does not seem to fix the problem... I am using a stock debian kernel: kernel-image-2.4.27-powerpc-pmac Any ideas? Japanese Input on Sarge/KDE
Hi everyone. In the past I have been able to get a working japaese input system with canna-server and kinput2. i start the input environment with a little script: export LANG=ja_JP kinput2 -xim -kinput -canna & uxterm& from the uxterm i can start typing in japanese by first pressing "shift+space". in the past any KDE application started from this uxterm would allow me to input japanes into a text field by first pressing "shift+space"... A couple of months ago this stopped working. Could there be something that has changed since then? Also, i was advised to add the following to my .xinitrc: export XMODIFIERS='@im=kinput2 however i am not really sure what this is doing.. Any ideas? Here is some general old-world specific linux stuff: http://fungus.ucdavis.edu/~dylan/linux/ Note that I have Sarge installed on my powerbook G3 (now a powerbook G4), and sound works quite well, you just need to do a modprobe `dmasound_pmac`. ..'xxx is not an ELF file' errors
The other night I was playing around with my linux/PPC powerbook, and `aptitude upgrade' failed giving errors on a gtk package. after that incident and some repeated attempts of the usual `aptitude -f upgrade' and `dpkg --configure -a' aptitude decided that it was going to remove a bunch of files: namely everything related to gtk and kde !! Thinking that I would sit down and fix the problem tonight, i started reading up on APT on the debian pages. I was able to force a re-install of the offending packages with dpkg, and subsequent `aptitude -f upgrades' would mostly work. However, throughout all of this i would occasionally see the message: /usr/lib/xxxlib is not an ELF file ... and some package would fail to be upgraded. Also, in the process of all of this KDE crashed and seemed to have corrupted anything that had previously been downloaded in /var/cache/apt/archives/ ... i figured this must have been due to broken libs or libs of varying vintage in use by KDE, and thus the crashes... ? maybe. right now it is downloading the remaining 55 packages to upgrade (down from 277 earlier this evening). I started wondering if hard disk corruption may have been the root of all of this... but the drive is rather new, and was not cheap. i did have some hard disk problems in the past with older kernels (i am running debian's 2.4.27), perhaps the kernel is to blame...? any ideas on what might be going on here, or where to go from now? thanks in advance! -- Dylan Beaudette Soils and Biogeochemistry Graduate Group University of California at Davis 530.754.7341 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". debian testing PPC: Strange Segmentation Faults
Good morning! Last night all was well with my G4 powerbook, even after a rather large number of updates from and apt-get update && apt-get upgrade. However, this morning, I noticed some strange segmentation faults when the machine was starting. They all seemed to be happening after a sed command was issued.
