Yes, I think you definitely should. Avoiding duplication of efforts
isn't the only benefit of ITP bugs; see [2] for a list of reasons.

That's not what native means. See the third point of [3].

I don't see why it would prevent you from using "git commit --amend"
(although you should never use it once you've pushed to a public
repository anyway). In fact, you can make a non-native package even if
you only have the one git repository; you just need to make sure your
.orig.tar.gz tarball doesn't contain the debian/ directory. See [4].

It says "should" and not "must" and a native package is just so much
simpler to work with at the current state of the package. Current state
is about 50 upstream releases to 3 debian changes only releases.
That might change in the future and then the package can become
non-native. But for now I feel native is the best way.

Because with 2 seperate gits I will have pushed/pulled the commit from
one git to the other and then using --amend just creates problems for
the next push/pull.

Even with a single repository I need to roll out a new orig.tar.gz for
every upstream change or have to commit upstream changes to
debian/patches/* every time I build a source package and send it to
build. The recent change that dpkg now needs "dpkg --commit" is
partially to blame there.

Both ways mean extra work just to build and test a new version. At the
moment the costs simply outweight the benefits. So unless I must change
this I will stick with a native package.

You're of course free to do as you want, but I maintain that it's a very
bad idea, and not doing something right because it's easier to do it
wrong will almost certainly turn out to be much more of a mess and a
burden than you'd have anticipated.

With the path you're choosing, you're essentially making sure that no
other distribution will ever package your software. They'd have to sort
through every new upstream release to see if anything changed besides
debian/; and when they fall behind on the upstream version simply
because only Debian-specific stuff has changed, their users will start
complaining and they'll have to explain the disparity.

And as mentioned in [4], NMUs will be much more complicated.

I think it important for any maintainer to clearly differentiate in
their mind upstream from Debian, even if they happen to be the same
person. Otherwise, you're artificially limiting your software to Debian,
which is at the opposite side of what free software should strive for.

Of course, I can't sponsor your package either way, so you can
completely ignore my advice if you wish. But if I was in the position of
sponsoring it, I wouldn't do it based on this point alone (and I kind of
hope prospective sponsors feel the same way).

I sincerely hope you'll do the right thing here.

You are free to use native packages for your own (intermediate,
unreleased) development versions. But the version ultimately uploaded to
Debian should not be native.

How you manage your git (or whatever) repository is not relevant in
chosing whether a package is native or not. Sure, I expect a certain
layout for repositories under d-o-m umbrella, but I guess I wouldn't
mind as long as it is obvious how to build the package from the git
repository (maybe README.source if a plain git-buildpackage doesn't work?).

Then maybe libaio-ocaml is not mature enough to enter Debian...

Bug#662812: RFS: lugaru/0~20110520.1+hge4354+dfsg-2

2012-03-06 Thread Martin Erik Werner
Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal

Dear mentors, and pkg-gamers,

I am looking for a sponsor for my updated package "lugaru" which
(amongst other things) fixes an "important" bug: #662424

* Package names   : lugaru
  Version : 0~20110520.1+hge4354+dfsg-2
  Upstream Authors: Wolfire Games
  : Neal Gompa
  : Alexander Monakov
  : Côme BERNIGAUD
  : sf17k
* URL : http://code.google.com/p/lugaru/
  : http://www.wolfire.com/lugaru
* License : GPL-2+, CC-BY-SA, "freeware"
  Section : contrib/games

It builds these binary packages:
lugaru - third-person action game

Changes:
 lugaru (0~20110520.1+hge4354+dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Rework launcher script to start windowed and with no mouse grabbing per
 default.
   * Update manual page:
 - Information regarding fullscreen and input grabbing,
 - document -h|-help|--help commandline
   * Change Arand -> Martin, same person, now with real name
   * Fix naming of 128x128 icon so it is used properly
   * Standards-Version 3.9.3
 - Update DEP-5 Format: link
   * Add unversioned library depend alternatives
 - libglu1-mesa-dev | libglu-dev
 - libglew1.5-dev | libglew-dev
 - libsdl1.2-dev | libsdl-dev
 - zlib1g-dev | libz-dev
   * Rename and refresh patches
 - Add DEP-3 tag to dont-install-data.patch
   * Build-Depends on libpng-dev, change from libpng12-dev (Closes: 662424)

The packages are lintian clean apart from:
I: lugaru: spelling-error-in-binary usr/lib/games/lugaru/lugaru ment meant
 - lintitan somehow misinterprets a mangled string in the binary
P: lugaru: no-upstream-changelog
 - Can't do much I'm afraid, point releases is what I'd hope for first...

The packages can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/contrib/l/lugaru/lugaru_0~20110520.1+hge4354+dfsg-2.dsc

The git VCS for lugaru is up for inspection at:
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-games/lugaru.git
- "debian_source" is the branch corresponding to the "lugaru" package,
see README.source for more info (this VCS layout is a bit of a failed
experiment).

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Hi Benoît,
thank you for your comment. I updated the package, adding the missing
libxslt1-dev dependency and fixing a couple of other minor issues.

Cheers,

Bug#662832: RFS: pdfcube/0.0.4-2 - PDF document viewer with 3D effects

2012-03-06 Thread Andreas Moog
Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "pdfcube"

* Package name: pdfcube
  Version : 0.0.4-2
  Upstream Author : [fill in name and email of upstream]
* URL : [fill in URL of upstreams web site]
* License : [fill in]
  Section : text

It builds those binary packages:

 pdfcube- PDF document viewer with 3D effects
 pdfcube-dbg - PDF document viewer with 3D effects - debug symbols

To access further information about this package, please visit the
following URL:

http://mentors.debian.net/package/pdfcube

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

 dget -x
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/pdfcube/pdfcube_0.0.4-2.dsc

Changes since the last upload:

pdfcube (0.0.4-2) unstable; urgency=low

* debian/source/format: Use 3.0 (quilt) source format
* debian/rules: Use DEB_LDFLAGS_MAINT_APPEND instead of LDFLAGS to ensure
  that all hardening flags are passed correctly. (Closes: #662235)
  Thanks Simon Ruderich
* debian/patches/array_bounds.patch: The top_color array is defined as
  containing 4 elements, yet the fifth element was accessed.
  (Closes: #662240)
  Thanks Simon Ruderich
* debian/control, d/rules, d/pdfcube.install, d/pdfcube.manpages:
  - add pdfcube-dbg package

A few things to look into:

  - Your man page is quite thin. Please expand it using full words
instead of abbreviations (img, thumb, etc.) and full sentences. Try
explaining what each option does.

For instance, '-o' takes a path as an argument; to what, a directory
or a file? What happens if both and XML file and a thumbnail are to
be generated?

Likewise, the description of '-s' doesn't help me at all. What is
the range of the threshold? Is it a float or an integer? What does
it represent?

For '-w', what is a waveform?

You also need to escape the space between 'January,' and '2012'.

  - debian/patches/compilation_fixes.patch contains a lot of whitespace
fixes, most of them in comments; please remove those to make it
easier to understand.

  - Why are you putting your package in contrib/misc? As far as I can
see, it doesn't depend on a non-free package, so the video section
seems more appropriate.

  - ltmain.sh is GPL-2+, and the FSF is its copyright holder; this
should be reflected in debian/copyright. Use

  licensecheck -r --copyright .

to make sure you're not missing anything else.

  - I don't think you should install AUTHORS; it contains a single name,
and that information is in debian/copyright already.

The NEWS file seems pretty useless as well.

The README file is just plain confusing.

Cheers,

Please only close #660433 in the changelog, both ITP bugs are now merged
and will be closed together. In general, if a bug needs to be closed
because it was opened by mistake, just close it manually; there's no
need to clutter the changelog with such entries.

sponsorship-requests mails should not go to debian-mentors

2012-03-06 Thread Samuel Bronson
It's getting to the point where I think it would be best if we do one
of two things:

 1. Split out sponsorship-requests bug mail to a new mailing list.

 2. Stop sending it anywhere, and let people subscribe through the PTS
if they care.

How about you?

I'd go with option two (but 1 is also acceptable), but the noise ration

I hate to +1 without much content, but IMHO the "right" thing to do
would be to split off people trying to give or receive help and
automated mail regarding requests for sponsorship.

The percent of RFS mail / mail is much higher then !(spam-mail) / mail.

In the end, this needs to go to the listmasters and get a change on
the BTS side as well. Perhaps we should start that flame war again.

Anyone who doesn't want to receive mail from the BTS should be
trivially able to filter it out.[1]

If you don't want to receive control and closed acks, discard
X-Debian-PR-Message: (transcript|closed). The following procmail

Or we're not reading these messages via an MUA, and hence don't control
which messages appear here.

+1 on sending automated messages to a different forum to which people can
optionally subscribe, separate from the human discussion in this forum.
