Which compiler

2002-11-05 Thread Bob Hilliard
For the 1386 architecture, sid has gcc 2:2.95.4-17 and gcc-3.0
1:3.0.4-13. Which compiler should be used for an Architecture: any
package? If the answer is gcc-3.0, should that be included in the
build-depends?

Regards,

Bob

No, and neither should any other build-essential packages be included in
the build-depends.

procps

2002-11-05 Thread Bob Hilliard
I have built a sid chroot by installing debootstrap and
build-essential. The procps package is installed, but the proc
directory in the chroot is empty. This makes it difficult to install
and start/stop the daemon.

Can anyone advise how I can make proc file system work in the
chroot?

Hi Bob,
just do a "mount /proc /proc -t proc" (from within the chroot of course).

However if you MUST use gcc 3.0 for some reason you do need to build-depend on
it.

And default compilers for your local architecture are listed in
/usr/share/doc/gcc/README.Debian. For i386:

cpp - cpp-2.95.4(package cpp-2.95)
gcc - gcc-2.95.4(package gcc-2.95)
g++ - g++-2.95.4(package g++-2.95)
g77 - g77-2.95.4(package g77-2.95)
gcj - gcj-3.0.4 (package gcj-3.0)
gij - gij-3.0.4 (package gij-3.0)
gobjc - gcc-2.95.4(package gobjc-2.95)
gpc - gpc-2.95.4(package gpc-2.95)
chill - chill-2.95.4 (package chill-2.95)

I don't know where the corresponding list for all architectures is.

But the plan is to move all architectures to gcc-3.2 for sarge.
I don't know why this hasn't happened already.
