I have loaded potato onto my laptop. When I boot and just before the login prompt comes up, I get a page or two of what appear to be command line helps. The message is "Usage: /sbin/getty [-hi...". The last line states "Init: Id "S" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes." Sure enough, 5 minutes later I get a screen full of "Usage" messages and a respawn statement. This happening occurred even when I had loaded the base system prior to downloading the distribution. I don't know what is generating the messages unless it is the news download program trying to start (that's my guess). Can anyone advise as to what program is causing this, where it is being started from, and how I can turn it off. Its most disturbing! Thanks in advance... Tom. Tom Cada <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have two questions: Can anyone tell me what 'NO_CHECK' and 'NO_FUSER' means in the /etc/pcmcia/network.opts file? How would I do the following: I have an internal NIC (eepro100) and a pcmcia NIC (wireless). I want to be able to run an 'ifdown eth0' when the card is injected and an 'ipup eth0' when the card is removed (if there was an eth0 active to begin with). Essentially, I'm trying to rotate between no NIC, eth0 and eth1 without too much trouble. Did I get this right. Debian boots into init level 2 by default? That's wrong. I'm surprised that they made this mistake. for xdm support is supposed to be init level 4. and for the rest it's init level 3. How do I fix this? -- 6:18am up 30 days, 12:29, 4 users, load average: 1.08, 1.18, 1.18

PCMCIA routing
Where can I set the routing tables for a PCMCIA card when it's inserted? If my card is 192.168.2.1 my typical routing ends up where everything is routed through this interface. I want to be selective down to 192.168.2.0/24 only and leave the default routing to another interface. The problem is that I want to have two routing defaults: 192.168.2.0/24 goes to 192.168.2.1 everything else goes to 192.168.0.1 but I keep getting: everything goes to 192.168.0.1 everything goes to 192.168.2.1 and nothing goes anywhere...

Re: PCMCIA routing
I ran into a problem and I thought you might be interested in that patch. My situation is this: I have two NICs plus a wireless network card that I'm trying to configure together so that my box can act as a wireless access point when the PCMCIA card is inserted. Under normal conditions when you insert the pcmcia card into a box that already has one present you get a routing table with two entries for default network gateways. Something like this: DestinationGateway Genmask 0.0.0.0192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 <<--This is a Network Card 0.0.0.0192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 <<--This is a PCMCIA card I have changed to code in /etc/pcmcia/network script to address this as follows: At approximately line 125 there is: test "$GATEWAY" && /sbin/route add default gw $GATEWAY metric 1 I have modified that into two lines as follows: test "$GATEWAY" && test "$NETWORK" $$ /sbin/route add $NETWORK gw $GATEWAY metric 2 test "$GATEWAY" && test ! "$NETWORK" $$ /sbin/route add default gw $GATEWAY metric 2 I personally changed the metric from 1 to 2 for not really good reason as nothing I have uses metrics anyway. But considering that I use a FastEthernet connection on everything and my Wireless card is a 2MB, it made sense to raise the metric value somewhat. That's arbitrary in my opinion. In any event. I would appreciate it if someone could look this over and let me know if I'm sane on this change. I downloaded the pcmcia version this morning (version .25?) so I think it is applicable. I have found this problem/fix on Slackware 7.1, Debian/stable, and Debian/testing. This patch allows me to use this box as a Wireless access point or Wireless gateway/firewall. Thanks! I'll go back and review it again. But when I had no GATEWAY defined and a NETWORK defined, I got the wrong routing table. Part of the problem is that I already have a default gateway defined on another interface on this machine. This particular box is not an end computer but a router box between four networks. One of them being a Wireless network - hence the pcmcia configuration.
/etc/network/options
Can someone give me a 10 second tour on this? I am not sure what the flag for ip_forwarding quite means. I know the concept and the echo "1" >/proc I don't remember quite where it echoes to, but that's Debians job, right? Does ip_forward=yes simply set this echo "1" >/proc... to be enabled? Any other options out there?
ifup/ifdown
when I Resume from Suspend/Hibernate or even power up, my ethernet is down. I have been in the routine of issuing: ifdown eth0 && sleep 2 && ifup eth0 and it works. According to IFCONFIG it's "UP", but no pings. my interfaces file includes the line 'auto eth0' which I thought was supposed to remedy this. It's kind of a new problem. It wasn't doing this before, but I don't know what changed exactly in between. Probably a pile of "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" happened in there someplace. But I wouldn't expect that to change anything like this. Suggestions on what to look at next? I was going to check out my "route -n" but that should set by the interfaces file and I haven't done anything there in weeks.
Schemes
Can someone point me to a discussion on this network scheme idea that is outlined in the pcmcia network scripts? In theory I should be able to tell the computer a scheme (home/work, wireless/lan) and it will configure the ifconfig and route information accordingly. I am interested in that. I am also interested in figure out a way to kill my eth0 when eth1 (pcmcia) comes up (cardctl insert).

simple question, I think. Does the standard installation of Perl with debian 2.2 come with DBI such that I can use it again either Postgres and/or Oracle databases? Now, if I have to do another kernal image (call it 010608.1) it yells about the revision of pcmcia-cs being <>010608.1 and dies if I recompile a pcmcia-modules to revision=010608.1 and try to install it... It yells about the kernel image <> 010608.1 and it dies. I have to do a force install every time. I'm certain that I'm not doing something quite right. Could someone please explain what it is that I'm doing wrong? Should I not be using revision numbers on something?
DLink 713 router/firewall/WAP
Anyone have any luck getting a Wireless Access Point / Router / firewall appliance working with the WAP part? I've got everything running, but I'm really lost when it comes to the configuration of a WAP. Very little documentation anywhere. If someone knows of any, can you please direct me?
Re: DLink 713 router/firewall/WAP
I did something like that once and it was working 100%. I created a box w/ 4 nics (one Wireless) and didn't really subnet anything, it was my single router point for all three networks and my gateway. That was... interesting to set up. But I wanted to try this DL-713 to try and limit the number of computers I had running in one room (loud!). But now the WAP won't talk to anyone. I'm not sure where the problem is. I can't get any windows boxes to install the PCMCIA cards correctly and I (recently) blew out my pcmcia configs on my notebook. Dumb. When it rains, it pours. Spawned process.
Tom. I'm really trying to RTFM but I have a heck of a time finding it. Where are the documents from Debain going to be found (presumable on my HD) that I can read to figure out things like network and pcmcia configuration? pcmcia network.opts
Essentially, I'm trying to rotate between no NIC, eth0 and eth1 without too much trouble. level 2?
Did I get this right. Debian boots into init level 2 by default? That's wrong.
-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
But when I had no GATEWAY defined and a NETWORK defined, I got the wrong routing table. ifup/ifdown
when I Resume from Suspend/Hibernate or even power up, my ethernet is down. Schemes
Can someone point me to a discussion on this network scheme idea that is outlined in the pcmcia network scripts? WEP
Can someone point me to something that will tell me how to set up an encrypted WEP using only Linux? I am not even able to find much explaining the network ID (SESS_ID). Re: WEP
Thanks all for the replies. I've done the RTM thing and have one question. If the network.opts file doesn't identify the ray_cs module as having a key, then how do I find out what it is supposed to be? Or, more to the point, how can I validate the claim that it does have 56 or 128 encryption. And if it doesn't, is it any good at all? Adam Shand wrote: > > > Suggestion: don't trust WEP. Perl-DBI
simple question, I think. Does the standard installation of Perl with debian 2.2 come with DBI such that I can use it again either Postgres and/or Oracle databases? Or is this some other package I need to get? I'm rather new to perl and somewhat old to databases in general. pcmcia package
I don't think I've ever figured this out. Here's what I'm doing. I install the source package for 2.2.19 and pcmcia-cs. make menuconfig on the kernel to my hearts content and then do: make-kpkg clean make-kpkg --revisioin=010607.1 kernel_image (my revisioning is yymmdd.x) dpkg -i ../kernel-image... Everything is cool so far. Then I do make-kpkg --revision=010607.1 modules_image dpkg -i ../pcmcia-modules... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". DLink 713 router/firewall/WAP
Anyone have any luck getting a Wireless Access Point / Router / firewall appliance working with the WAP part?
Missing X - Window Manager?
I'm trying to install the latest and greatest (testing) version of X. I have it configured... Sort of. X -configure creates a file that seems OK. RE: [debian-laptops] Dlink 650 p1 on debian
As I understand it, mine has the Intersil Prism III chipset. I guess I need to make sure that that is the case. TOm I used the debian wrapper to install and build them. I have not really had any problems out of it. Only down side to the Dlink wireless is that they change chipsets between G650 and G650+ for example. Cross your finger and hope you have the Atheros chipset. It has worked the best for me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Sound on a ThinkPad 560X
I have an old ThinkPad 560X which I use as a router/gateway/firewall with my cable modem. Now I'd also like to pipe music from the web into the 560 and output it thru the headphone jack to my amplifier. Problem is, I can't seem to find the right driver for the 560's sound card, a CS4237B. I've tried loading the sound blaster drivers because the CS4237B has a SB compatibility mode, but as the Sound HOWTO predicted, that was a waste of time. I tried loading the ALSA drivers but snd-4236 reports that no soundcard was found. I can load the OSS/Free driver CS4236 although ad1848 does report that no ISAPnP cards were found. I then try alsaplayer with an OSS output module to play a tune. The sound card does produce music very, very faintly and the external volume control has not effect. I tried the volume parameter on alsaplayer -- no help. I tried using mpg123 with the same result. The archives don't seem to offer any guidance here either. If anyone can give me some pointers I sure would appreciate it. Thanks. Tom
Re: Sound on a ThinkPad 560X - SOLVED
Paul, That was the crucial information. I'm not sure which was the problem, but my /etc/modules had 'char-major-14 soundcore' and I had no mixer installed. Normally I just use the tools KDE supplies but I don't have X installed on this machine so I'm really roughing it. So I fixed '/etc/modules' and I installed 'rexima' -- which is a nice ncurses mixer -- and voila', sound. As for the sound quality, well I don't intend to use the internal speakers anyway. Thanks. Tom

Wheezy on HP EliteBook 2560p
Hi, I installed Debian Wheezy (with KDE) on my HP Laptop EliteBook 2560p. Re: Swap
I do not know where the various rules-of-thumb came from, but suspect it mostly was from production multiuser/multiprocess systems where the emphasis was on throughput, I/O wait was common, and it throughput could be increased by overcommitting real memory and thereby reducing the processor idle time that occurs because processes are waiting for I/O completion. The target model would be a zSeries mainframe or large Unix or Windows server with many jobs running. On a desktop system, probably with one and a small fraction users, not all that many background processes, and, with present memory prices being what they are, enough memory to hold them all, the swap requirement is lower, and possibly zero. In general, you do not really want to swap, ever, especially on an interactive system. Swapping (now usually paging, which is somewhat different) always will degrade performance, and should be avoided if possible. That said, another poster noted that if hibernation is an option, swap is where the memory image is put, and it should be at least as large as real memory. You can estimate the need for operational swap reasonably using utilities like top and vmstat. Top will show maximum swap for the current boot at a glance; if it is zero, no swap has been used since the last boot, and if the system has been up for a while that indicates a zero (or at least small) swap requirement. If the amount is not zero, it would be reasonable to add half a GB or so to the peak swap and round up to next full GB. Bad things are likely if you run out of (memory + swap). If it is a laptop and you want to use hibernate, set swap to the larger of the operational swap size and the system memory size. Re: Swap
Thank you; I did not know that, and it makes for a significant swap size reduction in nearly all cases of a desktop or laptop workstation. The other points, I think, are not much changed. For the case Jos Collin presented initially, (and noting his mention in another branch of 175 MB actually used) 2GB swap likely is quite enough. Re: Home Directory in SSD
Doing regular backups takes pretty good care of device failure. Depending on how it is done, it also can help recover from accidents other than equipment failure, like deleting files in error. That said, I have read that for some time SSD reliability has been at least on a par with HDDs. And you also do not want to have to recover data from a failed HDD. HP zBook G5 issues
I have a Hewlett Packard zBook G5, with a generally successful Debian with Gnome install, initially 10.x (as current in January 2020) and recently upgraded to bullseye. The installation is vanilla except that: a. It is installed on ZFS (including /) b. It has the nVidia proprietary driver and xorg (Nouveau was very sluggish) c. It is dual boot, with Windows on one NVMe device and Debian on another. Grub is installed on the Debian device and handles both Linux and Windows well. d. Several not-debian programs are installed on /opt and probably not relevant to any of the issues described below. There were several relatively low-impact but annoying issues, most of which evaporated with no effort beyond regular software maintenance. The one that remains is: Keyboard: the keyboard function keys to control screen brightness that (usually) do not work correctly but, instead, operate identically to the microphone on/off function key, including producing the same scan and key codes (as reported by showkey -s or showkey -k, on either a gnome or console terminal). Output from showkey -s 0x5a 0xda, and scancode -k reports keycode 190 press keycode 190 release. Irritatingly, on occasion they work correctly to control brightness. When this happens it may persist over several reboots. The brightness control in the Gnome settings power tab works as expected, and the buttons work normally when Windows is in control. 2. From time to time, while running, the screen freezes: keyboard input and mouse buttons do not work, although the pointer moves appropriately. Switching to a virtual console and back almost always corrects the problem. Suggestions on any of these defects will be gratefully received. The zBook is a very nice machine in most respects. I'm posting to both debian-laptop and debian-users since it is not whether this is exclusively a laptop type problem and apologize if that is inappropriate. Regards, Tom Dial
Re: swapon command error
I can't contribute to solving the problem you state, but it is not clear that it is the real problem at all. You do not describe the system on which you want to add a swap file or the problem that is meant to solve, but the list addressed, debian-laptop, suggests it might be a laptop. If that is true, and if the root problem is poor performance or insufficient main memory for the workload, adding swap is unlikely to solve it. At best, adding swap allows the system scheduler to substitute paging to storage that is hundreds to tens of thousands of times slower than main memory when there is not enough RAM available. That is reasonable in server environments in which there are dozens to hundreds of active jobs in memory and many of them may be waiting at any given time for slow operations like network or storage I/O. On a laptop being used interactively, it often is not reasonable to have swap at all or, at most, more than a small amount to handle occasional, but rare, instances of full memory to avoid a system crash. Significant swap activity, whether to a device or an even slower file, is very unlikely to improve performance. The best way to improve performance issues caused by insufficient memory is to add memory. Running fewer jobs or opening fewer browser tabs may improve performance, but adding swap to an actively swapping system and keeping the workload the same (or increasing it) is quite unlikely to improve performance, and might make it worse. I know that I am short of disk space on the root partition in part caused by multiple versions of large libraries that can't be flagged as obsolete as other packages have them as dependencies. Could somebody more knowledgeable than myself give some hints on how to solve this. You need more storage available during the upgrade on whatever device has the /lib directory. Purging a package, as you found, may help, but is only a temporary mitigation. You probably need to increase free storage gong forward, either by purging more (maybe much more) or migrating to a larger device. Running nearly full negatively affects performance and, in the case of SSDs, service life. It would help if you posted information about the distribution of storage, for example, the output of df -h This kind of question is not peculiar to laptops, and the debian-user mailing list probably would be a better place to post it, if only because that is a more active list. support of Thinkpad X60s
I am a long standing user of an IBM A21m notebook (circa 2000) and am looking at an upgrade. I'm eying the Thinkpad X60s because it's: -- small and light (A21m is >7 pounds) -- equipped with only a joystick mouse However, before I buy I'm trying to get some confirmation on how well the Debian installation and this notebook work together. Primarily in terms of power saving, sleep, hibernation, suspend, and smaller features like getting the disk to spindown and spinup correctly. So I'm looking for people who have first hand experience with this model and Debian to compare notes. I'm not always thrilled by the web pages that mention this stuff because sometimes they're wrong or the term "eventually got working" translates to several weekends spent customizing everything only to have it quite functioning periodically. As a comparison of what I know about notebooks: my A21m cannot spin-down under any circumstances. Installing the notepad packages makes it worse. Under all conditions it will spin-down and immediately spin-up again -- power-cycling the hard drive every few minutes until I can disable the feature. Once under kernel 2.4.xx I had 99% of what could work, working well -- including spindown, sleep, hibernate, but not so anymore. Doesn't matter -- I'm looking at a new machine, right? Once upon a time I could hibernate to a windows partition located at /dev/hda1. I don't know if this is even required anymore (swap?). I never had an option to get the thinkpad buttons working under linux. There are various reports of WLAN working and not working help? I would love to hear from someone who has one of these and can help me make that decision. But if you're going to tell me about how well some other notebook works it might not be of much use unless it's the same architecture or something "transferrable" like that. Kachina Tech - Portare Laptops?
I've been using Debian on desktops for quite a while, but laptops are new territory for me. I'm considering getting one, and came across this web site which sells Portare laptops with Debian (slink, potato, or Corel) installed. http://www.KachinaTech.COM/US/portare.html It's not that I really need to buy a machine with Debian pre-installed, but I'm considering it for a few reasons: 1) Known hardware compatibility with Linux 2) Linux-aware tech support available if needed 3) I like the idea of supporting vendors who do this Does anyone on the list have any experience with Kachina Technologies and/or the Portare laptop systems that they're selling? If so, I'd appreciate any opinions or comments you have on them. The site looks reputable, but I'm not familiar with them. Recommendations of other laptops/vendors are welcome also. Tom

If thats not taking power unneceserry or is some fake is not relly good to show this, some ppl have on takskbar applet wich show how much power of procesor is in use, few times i found out that MC hang (when I use it from root account) and it take almost all procesor speed, when kill this proces was fine, but in simmilar situation ppl will have fals alarms :> siaraX

Best "new" laptop
I currently have a Toshiba 720CDT, and overall have been happy with it. I _may_ have an opportunity to get a new laptop (with someone else's money :-). I want to get feedback regarding "current" laptops on the market and how well they work with Linux. My goal here is to get the fastest, lightest, Linux compatible laptop out there. Something with a "thin" form-factor and with long battery life, but with the horsepower to be a desktop replacement when placed in a docking station. (I don't want much, do I?) Since I'm in the "dreaming" stage right now, my question is this... If you had an unlimited budget on which to spend on your "dream" Linux laptop, what would you buy and why? -- Tom Hoover N5NTM <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - http://www.hisword.net/tom - checkout HisWord(tm) Palmtop Bible at the above URL - --- finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] for PGP key

Is the port actually enabled? nevermind, i finally got it working. it seems the ps2 DOS util has two serial options. one was enabled, but the other wasn't. thanks anyway. 8) -- Tom Vier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> DSA Key id 0x27371A2C

if your email address' secrecy is that important to you, why not put a note in your .sig that asks not to reveal your address? you can't expect people to read your mind. X config help
I just installed Debian 2.2r2 on my Thinkpad. I was previously running Slackware on this machine and decided to give Debian a try. Maybe this is a newbie Q but... How the heck to you configure gnome & sawmill to work together? I have ~/.xsession with the one line: gnome-session & exec sawmill And this doesn't quite do it. Apparently sawmill and gnome are not binding together properly. I've checked the Debian and Gnome web site for docs. What I have here is not covered - it's assumed I've gotten this far... Also, is there someway I can set this as the global default?
Layout Question
I'm trying to install the 2.2.18 kernel into a Debian install. I'm not using the Deb binaries for a couple reasons, but I got into a jam.. I'm used to Slackware. If you want to change it, you edit the file directly. Debian doesn't seem to do that very well. Lots of warnings about not changing files.. According the my previous experience with slackware my /etc/modules.conf file should consist of something like: alias cs46xx sound alias eepro100 eth0 and really nothing else. In Debian, I have many lines and many aliases and when I try to load a new kernel, the modules won't load... I need to tell Debian that there's a lot of files/modules I have no intention of using. What's the tool(s) to do that? I'm afraid if I edit the /etc/modules.conf directly, the installation will get mad.
