NE2k PCMCIA 2.2.19 kernel

2001-08-29 Thread aeleblanc

Hello,
I have a toshiba tecra 510CDT (P133 144MB Ram) and a trendnet TE210-CT PCMCIA Ethernet adapter.
the PCMCIA Appears to be working but there is no eth0 after it boots.  I have tried alot of different solutions with the assistance of someone on IRC but unfortunately I don't have any experience with PCMCIA or the inner workings of Linux (i'm comfortable with Package management and console based programs, but the guts of the OS are still a mystery to me)  can anyone offer any assistance.  the only thing is that if at all possible i'd like to do this with ONLY what comes in the debian base install, because I have no Floppy Drive or CD Rom on the laptop and no way to get files on it with the exception of popping out the HD and putting it in a desktop machine with a little IDE Converter which I don't have :)

Thanks in advance for any help Guys.

2001-09-08 Thread aeleblanc

Hello,
I Recently installed Debian on a laptop with a flaky cd-rom and no floppy drive.  I accomplished this magnificent feat by borrowing a 40-44 pin IDE Adapter and starting the installation on a desktop machine.  the installation went OK, I was using the woody boot disks because I had heard there were problems with my laptop and the potato disks (or maybe it was all toshiba laptops, I don't recall)  anyway I did the Base install on the desktop machine.  then put the HD Back into the laptop.  when I tried ot get the PCMCIA Ethernet working It wouldn't detect the card.  it kept automatically loading an axnet (or something similar sounding) driver.  the card is a trendnet TE-210CT (ne2k clone) I have much experience with PCMCIA or Linux for that matter ,any input would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
Andre

Toshiba Tecra 9000

2001-11-22 Thread aeleblanc

Hey Guys,
I've got a $5000 Canadian Budget for a new Laptop and I Really like the looks of the Toshiba Tecra 9000, (PIII 1GHz, 256 MB Ram, 8x DVD, Built in Wireless technology, TV-Out, and other great features, but its hard to find info on Installing linux on any newer laptops.  Does anyone know of any incompatibilities or anything with the New Tecra Models? or can anyone suggest another brand/model?  I've only ever owned one laptop before and it was an OLD Toshiba Tecra (P133, something or other) but its still kicking so I'm inclined to purchase a tecra again.  Also I hate those god forsaken glide point things, so if you suggest another model, I'd prefer something with the accupoint, and a really nice display.

IBM Thinkpad A30p - Opinions, Possible Problems etc?

2001-11-26 Thread aeleblanc

I was originally looking at a toshiba Tecra 9000 for a new Laptop to fit my budget of $5000 CAD.  I recently came across the IBM Thinkpad A30p which i can squeeze into the budget as well.  I'm favouring this over the tecra now for a few reasons (133MHz Bus instead of 100, ATI Radeon 32 MB instead of some other garbage, Video in/out as opposed to tv-out only etc etc..)  Does anyone know of any problems running linux on this model or have any opinions on IBM's w/ Linux as opposed to other Laptop Manufacturers?

TIA
Andre

Off Topic: Why Lotus Notes Sucks

2001-11-30 Thread aeleblanc

Reasons Why Lotus Notes Sucks.

1) Well, its version 5 and its still buggy as hell.
2) you have to make a selection from a dropdown menu to quote someone when you reply, other wise there is no quoted text
3) ...And when you do that, It puts a big ugly graphical header in the middle of the email, which you can't delete.
4) and the quoted text does not get any character placed in from to show that it has been quoted (ie. > )
5) its configuration menu consists of about 10 options.
6) using the middle mouse button will sometimes (haven't fiured out exactly why) cause another window to pop up (not a windows window, but a lotus notes window) that has the old version 4 screen layout in it)
7) very non-standard (as far as I know it doesn't support POP3 or IMAP Mail, just Lotus Notes Mail... I'm probably wrong here but I haven't seen any options for it)
8) the window switching behaviour is very erratic, sometimes you click in the taskbar thing for a window and nothing happens, or it opens a different window (by windows and taskbar i'm referring to ones built into Lotus, (it's an MDI) not the Windows ones)
9) Not sure of the technicalities behind this one but our Identity Files (store your settings, etc) have to be mapped to drive M, if not, it will crash, and no other users can use it until someone from IT Comes and Fixes it.
10) Its Really awkward working with email attachments.  can't get into more detail, you just have to try it.
11) Its really ugly.
12) just as I was trying to hit "send" after writing reason # 11, Lotus told me that "The message has been deleted" i have no Idea Why.

Is that enough to change their minds?

Who is HC?

Oh, and here's #13.  Holding down shift and using the arrow Keys, or home/end etc. doesn't highlight things in the to, from cc and bcc fields, but it does in everything else.
