automount under gnome 3
hi i recently completed a clean install of gnome 3 using wheezy/sid. i'm still tweaking a little and can't seem to get auto-mount to work when inserting or booting with usb drives attached. i have gnome-settings-daemon 3.2.2-2 installed. mounting 'manually' from the computer:/// location in nautilus works fine - all drives attached are shown here fine - they're just never auto-mounted. i have automount and automount-open checked in dconf org.gnome.desktop.media-handling. couple of other issues in gnome 3.2 so far include empathy not notifying when a message is received and software update notifications don't work though i have verified package repository updates do seem to be working - perhaps subjects for a later post after i do some more digging on these. suggestions appreciated. thanks Takis
Re: automount under gnome 3
hi i have both ntfs and ext3/4 drives that i plug in via usb. in any case the ntfs packages you list are installed. i am not familiar with disk-manager and will try that now. i was expecting that if gnome 3.x is attempting to integrate/simplify/control numerous pieces that it would 'just work' without the need of installing additional packages as a work around. anyway, thanks very much for your suggestion. Re: Lenovo ThinkPad X240 and T440
hi i just got the T440s. i haven't tried everything so i'm still tinkering. i installed jessie almost immediately. no install issues except some initial uefi bios problems i fixed by turning off the 'secure and signed' software check in the bios. i have tried most things except suspend and can say all is well - i'm running jessie with gnome3. some getting used to the new touchpad but its ok. the screen at 1080p is simply beautiful. haven't noticed any heating issues - in fact i don't think the temp has gone above about 60C. i haven't decided what to do with the 16gb ssd drive yet. its not the cheapest laptop but its my 4th thinkpad and i'm rather happy with the brand even though the new T440 line is quite a departure from the old. overall i highly recommend it and i'm super pleased. like i said, i have had it for less than a week so i'm still setting it up really but so far so good. hope this helps Takis On 9 May 2014 03:40, Testosticore wrote: > Hello, debian-laptop! > > Has anyone used a Lenovo ThinkPad X240 or T440, or indeed any of the newer > ThinkPad models (with 4th-generation Intel "Haswell" processors)? > > What can you say about build quality, performance (including heating > issues, battery life, etc.), price and compatibility with Free Software? > > > -- > To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-laptop-requ...@lists.debian.org > with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: problems with udev and orinoco_cs pcmcia driver
whats the kernel version? the debian stock kernel 2.6.15 does dump some apparently harmless udev errors on boot. i read this was a bug in the initrd image build on kernel installation. not really sure. i also found that rebuilding the initrd file for that kernel using (for example) yaird fixes this. it fixed it on one machine here, but not another so i'm not really sure. not really sure this is correct... perhaps someone can confirm. Re: Thinkpad R52 dvd
Hi i have an R52 1858A19. i have posted my .config at: http://www.executequery.org/temp/dot-config-2.6.16.1 its for vanilla kernel 2.6.16-1, though i used it for debian kernel 2.6.15 - the 2.6.16 compile was a final vain attempt in fixing my current issue with the DVD drive. the drive reads and writes with no issues. audio cds are fine however movie dvds are not. data dvd are ok. for whatever reason dvd movies do not play at all and players just dump (totem in my case) it complains that libdvdcss is not installed when it and other required libs to play movies is. anyway, i'm still playing with that one. have not tried suspend just yet. will post when i do. suggestions on the dvd movie issue would be appreciated. thanks Takis On Mon, 2006-04-17 at 10:02 -0300, Guilherme Menegon Arantes wrote: > On Mon, Apr 17, 2006 at 02:14:35PM +0200, Stefano Canepa wrote: > > Hi all, > > I bought a ThinkPad R52 and installer Debian using new > > debian-installer, everything is working fine except: > > 1) suspend > > 2) DVD > > > Same here. > > > > I am triyng to solve the second but I was unable to let ata_piix to > > support the PATA DVD? Re: Thinkpad R52 dvd
hi no i didn't have udf in /etc/fstab for that drive. i added it and it sadly made no difference. my desktop pc which is a similar debian setup (minus the laptop bits) plays them with no issue and i have the same packages install. i did notice that /etc/mtab after inserting a dvd shows the drive mounted as udf so it was kinda doing that anyway. i also noticed that my dekstop machine did not have a dvd drive entry in fstab at all. i commented the drive out on the laptop and as before it auto mounted as udf and all looked good but totem still complains that libdvdcss isn't there and the dvd is encrypted. i'm stumped!!! the /etc/mtab entry looks like: /dev/scd0 /media/AU_109961 udf ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=007 0 0 thanks Takis On Mon, 2006-04-17 at 17:33 +0200, Frans Pop wrote: > On Monday 17 April 2006 16:43, Takis Diakoumis wrote: > > the drive reads and writes with no issues. audio cds are fine however > > movie dvds are not. data dvd are ok. > > You may want to check if you have type udf listed for the drive > in /etc/fstab. Re: Thinkpad R52 dvd
ok, dvd movies are working now. i actually cheated. i have a small 4GB windows partition on the laptop - for thinkpad bios and embedded controller updates. i never tried palying the dvd on it. anyway, i did, and after some thinking it worked. i can only assume, and since reading further into this, that the windows dvd player silently ran the regionset for the drive. i read that there is a linux region set utility for a dvd drive, so it could be run from there. anyway, happier chappy now - totem and friends work. Re: very poor performance of DVD using vesa or fglrx-driver
i know this was just posted up but... it really sounds like the dvd isn't running in DMA mode. i had this problem on my thinkpad at first, dvd would be choppy as you suggest, music i played would also be. fixed it by enabling DMA on the drives - in my case it was actually using the wrong kernel module for the drives. check the output of dmesg (as suggested by another) or the output of hdparm -I hope this helps. Suspend - no resume
Hi i'm trying to get suspend2 working on my thinkpad r52. i'm using debian etch with a vanilla kernel from kernel.org and custom config for this particular laptop. following the instructions from suspend2.net i recompiled my kernel with suspend2 and installed hibernate etc. i modified hibernate.conf with relevant options. suspend itself seems to work ok. the machine begins to create the restore image, i get the text progress bar etc and then it shuts down as expected. however when i resume it goes through a normal boot process as opposed to restoring its previous state. i have tried it with suspend to disk using both swap and a file. the result is exactly the same for both. one thing that i'm unsure of is the creation of the initrd image. everything i have read regarding this setup for debian is different. i have tried the script from suspend2.net, and also the 2 (or 3) different script from the same sites wiki at http://wiki.suspend2.net/DistroAndHardwareSetup/DebianInitrd the only suspend2 output i get with dmesg is as follows: Suspend2 Core. Suspend2 Compression Driver loading. Suspend2 Encryption Driver loading. Suspend2 Swap Writer loading. Suspend2 FileWriter loading. my grub boot options seem to be correct: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16.18-r52-1 root=/dev/sda3 resume2=file:/dev/sda5:0xeac000 libata.atapi_enabled=1 ro vga=791 the above was my last stuffing around with a suspend file - again, have tried suspend to swap with relevant changes made to the config and boot stuff and the result is the same. no errors are generated. i'm stumped and spent most of the day fiddling with this. some help would be most appreciated. thanks Takis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Suspend - no resume
Hi thanks for all the suggestions - i everything. after noticing that it wouldn't suspend without X either, i figured it had to be something i still wasn't missing or not doing. i had placed my suspend script for the initrd image creation within /etc/mkinitrd/scripts and (to be sure - clutching at straws at this point) in /etc/mkinitramfs/scripts/local-premount. it seems that on running dpkg -i kernel-image-xxx.deb it wasn't executing the script and adding the required echo > /proc/suspend2/do_resume to the initrd image. i finally got it to work by creating the initrd image manually after installing the new kernel with suspend2 enabled. so after installing i ran mkinitrd on the newly installed kernel manually and all is now well. the contents of my suspend2 script under /etc/mkinitrd/scripts is below #!/bin/sh cat <>$INITRDDIR/script if [ -z "\$noresume" ]; then # be careful with the 'dollar' sign echo > /proc/suspend2/do_resume umount -n devfs umount -n proc fi EOF anyway, working now. thanks heaps for the suggestions. it was a big help. whole process was a little untidy and messier than expected but got there in the end. has anyone had any issues with installing kernel images and having any init scripts run for initrd? anyway... thanks again. its a shame... the sticker looked pretty good. i actually ordered some debian stickers from cafepress.com they arrived quite quickly on a large sheet and i had to cut each one out - they're not the plastic domed stickers but the flat ones. replaced the winxp sticker with the debian one on my thinkpad. not the best sticker quality, but not too bad. Re: no sound flash animations
Hi funny you mention that. i took a look at my custom startup script for my thinkpad and found to the bottom the following i must have added some time ago and forgot. # esd links if [ ! -e /usr/lib/libesd.so.1 ]; then ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1 fi the script contains some other bits and pieces, like power settings, cpu freq settings etc... i added it to my startup using webmin - which with my often limited knowledge is a great fallback control of numerous things ;) hope this helps. i810 driver and X
Hi i'm experiencing a problem when switching views from laptop lcd to external display and back or with both. i have an IBM ThinkPad R51 2887GVM running debian testing. it uses the i855GM video chip and i'm using the i810 driver in X. i have the relevant modules loaded in the kernel (custom debian kernel 2.6.11) - i830 and intel_agp. when switching to external display the top of the screen is garbage and the screen has moved down. when switching to both screens - both exhibit the top 50 or so pixels as garbage and when switching back to laptop screen only it stays as garbage. the only way i can retrieve that part of the screen is to restart X. i have posted a shot of both screens at: for the external monitor - http://www.executequery.org/linuxthinkpad/thinkpad-monitor.jpg for the laptop lcd - http://www.executequery.org/linuxthinkpad/thinkpad-screen.jpg interestingly, using the vesa driver in X instead of i810 does not cause this issue - it works as expected. has anyone else experienced this with the xfree i810 driver? is there a way i can fix this? a work around - other than "use the vesa driver" ;) any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks Takis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: i810 driver and X
Hi all been fiddling a little since the original post. i did try the xorg packages suggested - unfortunately no change. i also noticed some other funnies with xorg (at least the packages i downloaded - later said to be dated and buggy). in any case, i've been scared off the xorg packages, probably until they hit testing. its a bummer that this problem exists as i intend to use the laptop for presentations and demos. i think i'll switch to the vesa driver as this doesn't garbage the display on either screen - can't really notice any difference in the display under vesa with the apps i'm running (not doing any 3d crap or other graphics intensive apps). will try again with the i810 driver when debian xorg matures - particularly the settings as described in http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2005-May/026680.html thanks to all that replied. USB floppy
Hi is anyone using a usb floppy successfully?? i'm running debian etch with a custom debian kernel 2.6.11. i have an ibm thinkpad r51. i bought an ibm usb floppy drive for it also. the system picks it up ok like so from dmesg: usb 2-1.4: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6 scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 6 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Vendor: MITSUMI Model: USB FDD 061M Rev: 2.00 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 usb-storage: device scan complete problem is that every time i insert a disk and attempt to mount it i get: sda: assuming drive cache: write through /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: unknown partition table SCSI error : <0 0 0 0> return code = 0x802 sda: Current: sense key=0x3 ASC=0x11 ASCQ=0x0 Info fld=0x24 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 36 Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 36 followed by a series of similar messages repeating while the system attempts to mount it. i can hear the drive spinning when i mount. i tested it on a win32 system and it picked it up and read a disk ok - so i figure it works. i googled for the above to no avail... i have tried both auto and vfat for the fs type - auto always fails and vfat does bring up a dir listing in nautilus eventually, though trying to read any file comes up with an IO error. has anyone else experienced anything like this? any suggestions would be most appreciated. thanks. Re: fbsplash for a 1400x1050 LCD screen
check out the following: http://debblue.debian.net/faq.php though the instructions are for the debblue theme - it opens the door and points to many others. very simple to follow and very nice outcome.
