I didn't test them very much (no benchmark) but I prefer the SVGA since I can switch between 640x480 and 1024x768 modes. I also use the framebuffer for console mode (1024x768). By the way, when I use 24bits modes, I've problems with some programs : Netscape use monochrome buttons (but the documents are fine) Xearth don't run complaining about number of bits per color. I think it's a bug in the retrieval of the bpp number. Everything is OK with 16bits modes. > > And I don't know which horizontal or vertical refresh rates I have to set. > > BTW, I have a thinkpad 390E. > > hsync= 31.5-48.5 > vsync= 60 > > I then edit the XF86Config file. Hi, In fact, Phoenix bioses can have hibernation-partition or hibernation-file. You can use phdisk under DOS (no option or /? -> help page) to (re)make an hibernation-file. lphdisk works under Linux and creates hibernation-partitions. It's less error-prone than phdisk (phdisk can write over another partition, it happened to me : it maked its partition in the middle of my (at this time empty) /usr/local partition. > Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me an explanation of this. > > Steve -- __ ________ __ |oo| | Sylvain Sauvage, doctorant [IAD & SMA] | |oo| <_)| | GREYC -- CNRS UMR 6072, Université de Caen | <_)| // \\ || // \\ (_| |_) | http://www.info.unicaen.fr/~sauvage | (_| |_) |_\==/_| |___ mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] _| |_\==/_|

I've the same chip on my laptop, running woody. So, you have several possibilities : - use the vesa framebuffer (worked for me), - use the radeon framebuffer (didn't worked, but I never managed to run the atyfb on any ati card), - use the vesa driver in xfree 4.1 (works fine, but no acceleration), - use the xfree 4.2 cvs (i did it : more than 1 Go of HD, but great acceleration, GL modes, XV and so on ; only few refresh bugs). I suggest not to try the 4th solution if you don't have expericence, time and patience. IMHO, the 3rd one is the simplest. -- __ __ __ |oo| | Sylvain Sauvage, doctorant [IAD & SMA] | |oo| <_)| | GREYC -- CNRS UMR 6072, Université de Caen | <_)| // \\ | | // \\ (_| |_) | http://www.info.unicaen.fr/~sauvage| (_| |_) |_\==/_| | mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] __| |_\==/_| -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
