I've got a Vaio F707, with a 256AV+ chip. The svga server (3.3.6) can't
probe it
so I just uncomment the "chipset NM2200" line in XF86Config and it
worked.

I've tried both. I didn't test them very much (no benchmark) but I
prefer the
SVGA since I can switch between 640x480 and 1024x768 modes. I also use
the
framebuffer for console mode (1024x768).

By the way, when I use 24bits modes, I've problems with some programs :
Netscape use monochrome buttons (but the documents are fine)
Xearth don't run complaining about number of bits per color.
I think it's a bug in the retrieval of the bpp number.
Everything is OK with 16bits modes.

Hi,

In fact, Phoenix bioses can have hibernation-partition or
hibernation-file.
So I presume that shrinking the Windows partition modified the position
of the partition file, so the bios can't find it anymore.

You can use phdisk under DOS (no option or /? -> help page)
to (re)make an hibernation-file.

lphdisk works under Linux and creates hibernation-partitions.
It's less error-prone than phdisk (phdisk can write over another
partition, it happened to me : it maked its partition in the middle
of my (at this time empty) /usr/local partition.

I've the same chip on my laptop, running woody.
So, you have several possibilities :

- use the vesa framebuffer (worked for me),
- use the radeon framebuffer (didn't worked, but I never managed to run
the atyfb on any ati card),
- use the vesa driver in xfree 4.1 (works fine, but no acceleration),
- use the xfree 4.2 cvs (i did it : more than 1 Go of HD, but great
acceleration, GL modes, XV and so on ; only few refresh bugs).

I suggest not to try the 4th solution if you don't have expericence,
time and patience. IMHO, the 3rd one is the simplest.

With XFree 4.2 :
Choose any ati card, then edit XF86Config and replace "ati" by "radeon".
The driver will automatically detect your card.

Use the vesa driver then and you won't have to install XFree86 4.2.
(Do as above : select any card and replace the driver by "vesa".)
