RE: Multiple Network Configs

Or, if you have a friendly sys-admin, get him to assign you a static IP
address you can take away with you. If you were on my system I'd let you!

Yes. Run dhcpd at home. :)

RE: Tochiba Satellite 2590CDT and Linux

1999-10-14 Thread Simon Ghent
Personally I'd recommend getting one that can display at least 1024x768 on
it's own screen - 800x600 is very limiting (unless you're doing text only).

As for a better machine - we use HP and Compaq here. Some HP machines are
very flimsy (3000), the Compaq ones are well built but expensive.
personally I wouldn't buy either!

First time poster to debian-laptop, be kind, =).

I am in a quick rush to get a laptop!!! Yeah!! Like TODAY or TOMMOROW.
I will be of course installing Debian and will need use it to dual boot
to Win9x, yuck.

The Satallite series look really good for the money but what about
compatibility? It uses the Trident Cyber9525 video chip which is
supported by Xfree86. The sound is the ESS1978S chip which I didn't see
mentioned in the kernel docs, but it seems like the ESS chips are all
pretty similar.

The video is only 800x600 on board but can go to 1280x1024x256 external.

Any advice is appreciated or suggestion to go with someting else.

Thanks,

Brian Servis

Work just give me one so I don't need to go to the trouble of speccing them.

Hell, if you start getting techies to spec kit we might end up with
something decent!

I very much agree on this - 1024x768 is very nice, but usually rather
expensive... I have Dell Inspiron 7000 with a 15" screen and I like it
very much, although it's a bit on the heavy side. So if you don't mind
a bit of size and weight I very much recommend it.
ATI Rage PRO LT chip set, supported in latest XFree86. Sound card is
ESS Maestro 2 - beta support at best, but I can listen to my mp3s and
that's really all I need ;-)
