I haven't ever used dispatch-proxy but I've used shorewall[1] on my
router to load-balance among multiple ISPs[2]. The router-side solution
is nice because then any clients behind that router automatically get
the benefit of load balancing. Also, since it's tranparent to the
client, clients don't need to use any special proxy settings.

The downside is that, by default, shorewall load balances based on route
so the threaded downloader-type client won't necessarily see a boost.

Mulitpath TCP and multipath quic require both the client and server to
support them. But yes, that's probably the real solution[tm] to this kind
of problem.

thinkpad freeze

2006-01-20 Thread Ryan Nowakowski
I'm running unstable. After an apt-get upgrade yesterday, my thinkpad
t42p freezes while using X. I'm using the same kernel as before the
upgrade. No keyboard or mouse response. Any ideas?

I don't think my freeze is related to the acpid bug. The entire machine
freezes, not just X. I can't kill X or switch to another VT and the
caps-lock key in unresponsive.

I was also getting several of these errors during apt-get:

ldconfig: /usr/lib/libgnet-2.0.so.0.6.1 is not an ELF file - it has the
wrong magic bytes at the start.

...so I reinstalled the packages that had the files with the wrong magic
bytes. Could that be the cause of the freeze? Are there some other
packages that I should reinstall?

I'm following the "cannot start x - ThinkPad T42" on the linux-thinkpad
list. Carlos seems to have the exact same problem. Even if I use the
"ati" driver instead of "radeon" it still freezes. Are you using fglrx?

It sounds like hotplug is bringing up your wireless card as eth1 using

Re: first post - which laptop to buy for OPTIMAL audio & graphics

2002-12-02 Thread Ryan Nowakowski
The best laptops for Linux are older ones that you can find cheap
or free :) One of the advantages of Linux is that is runs great on
older hardware. So, find a winders user that is forced to buy a new
state-o-the-art laptop to support their XP upgrade, and take the old
one off their hands for a fair price.
FYI: I'm running Sarge on an Inspiron 3500 and a Latitude CPi. I've had
better luck with the Inspiron. Everything works but the sound is a
little fuzzy.

Looks like that's a prism2 card. I'm using a prism2 and
running Testing/Unstable with the following packages installed:
kernel-image-2.4-686
kernel-image-2.4.19-686
kernel-pcmcia-2.4.19-686

You might have problems with the card locking up while using WEP.
Make sure you flash the card with the latest update.

I toiled with my sound setup for many days before I found the silver

sndconfig'. That'll install RedHat's sound config utility. The run
sndconfig as root and it should auto-detect your sound card. Then
just monkey with the IRQ/DMA settings until you can hear the sound
sample. That'll generate a sndconfig file in your /etc/modutils
directory. Make sure you remove any other sound configuration stuff
from any other modutils files.

Everything works but the sound is a
little fuzzy.

running Testing/Unstable with the following packages installed:

kernel-pcmcia-2.4.19-686

You might have problems with the card locking up while using WEP.

I use the wlan-ng drivers with my 650. That way I can use kismet and
airsnort.

Try using a netinst cd and installing from that.

You are going to have to use the wlan drivers if you want to use kismet
or airsnort. I'm using the wlan-ng modules right now:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ export COLUMNS=180; dpkg -l "*wlan*" | grep ii
ii linux-wlan-ng 0.2.0-12 utilities for wireless prism2
cards
ii linux-wlan-ng-modules-2.4.20-1-686 2.4.20-7+0.2.0-6 drivers for wireless
prism2 cards

ifrename is now run by hotplug to reorder/rename interfaces.
