How to clean a laptop?

2001-08-05 Thread Rogério Brito

Dear people,

I just bought a used laptop (it's a Compaq Armada V300) and
since it is a second hand computer, I'd like to have some care
with it.

After installing Linux on it, I now want to clean it, since it
is full of finger prints and marks, but I don't know how to do
this. What would be the preferred ways of cleaning it? Which
products could I use with it?

I think that a cloth moistened with water won't be sufficient
(and I'm not sure it is even the recommended way), but I'm
really scared of using alcohol on it (especially with the lcd
display).

Since this is my first laptop, I'd like to ask the more
experienced people for some assistance.

Thank you very much for any help, Roger...

Unfortunately, I can't help with this problem, but I'm a
newbie with regard to laptops. I just acquired mine, a
(second-hand) Compaq Armada V300, two weeks ago and with my
ignorance on the subject, I partitioned my HD without any
hibernation partition.

So, my question is: does the Compaq Armada V300 need this
partition? Should I create it with the lphdisk utility or
should I use another one?

I just read parts of the Laptop Howto, but these questions
where not answered there and I'd love to have my laptop
working as well as possible under Linux.

I'd appreciate any handholding or directions that people can
provide me.

Thank you very much, Roger...

P.S.: It does not use a Phoenix BIOS, I think -- it uses a BIOS made
by Compaq (or is this Compaq BIOS a Phoenix BIOS with some "make up"?)

Questions about notebooks and Debian

2001-08-01 Thread Rogério Brito

Dear people,

I've been tracking this list lately with some interest since I
got an old Power Mac 9500/180MP to play with one month ago.
Unfortunately, I couldn't install Debian on this machine, due
to some hardware problems (I think) and I don't have this
machine with me again (I took it borrowed from my uncle).

(Details on my quest on trying to get Linux/Debian/anything on
the computer are at ).

Anyway, I liked the idea of playing with a PPC machine and
since I'd like to purchase a low end notebook (it will depend
on the cost of the machine), I would be considering getting an
iBook.

Unfortunately, I'm a newbie with both notebooks and macs and I
don't know which notebook would be a good purchase for someone
that plans to use mostly Linux/Debian on a portable computer,
with X and KDE running almost 100% of the time. One thing that
is very important for me is

So, I'm seeking some advice on the following:

* how does a PowerPC G3 500MHz compare in terms of a x86
processor? Would it have the same horse-power of a, say,
  Duron 600MHz? Pentium 3 700MHz? Celeron 466MHz?

* are the new iBooks good purchases? I've read that the sound
wasn't working some time ago, but has any progress been made
in this area? Does the Firewire port work? Do the USB
connectors work? Are there other problems that I should know
about? Is Apple kind to Open Source Projects?

* if a new iBook is not a good machine to run with Debian,
what other non-expensive notebooks in the x86 family would
  be good purchases? Any recommendations?

I'd like to purchase something that would be as well supported
as possible by Linux and I'd prefer to do business with Open
Source friendly companies.

Thank you very much for any recommendations, Roger...

Hints for notebook users

2002-03-06 Thread Rogério Brito

Dear people,

Some time ago, I wrote a small list of hints for people using
Debian/Linux on noteboks.

During that time I, I was more or less focused on hints
regarding low memory, HD space and power (battery)
consumption.

In fact, low power consumption is one of my main concerns
regarding notebooks and this was primarily the reason for me
to make this "repository" of hints.

So, I would like to share with others the hints that I use and
I would appreciate any additions or criticism that other
people might have.

The page is at <http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/notebooks/> and
although most of the hints are Debian-centric, some of the are
even operating system-agnostic.

If you feel that I have forgotten anything useful for notebook
users, please let me know and I will include it in the next
version of the document. I intend to release a more detailed
version RSN.

Looking forward for any feedback, Roger...

P.S.: Sorry for the cross-posting, but I think that the message is
appropriate for all mailing lists. Please reply to this message on
both debian-powerpc or debian-user, as I don't currently subscribe to
debian-laptop.
