Re: Turning off backlight of TFT display
Hello Stefan, I have a Sony Vaio pcg505tr. To get it to turn off I used xset on my session startup to change the parameters to let X know that I'm using a DMPS capable display. Since I use window maker I added this to my ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart script. xset +dpms xset dpms 0 0 300 This promply turns the screen off after 5 minutes of inactivity. The man page will show the rest of the nifty options available. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, consider this my first reply to this list. I'm currently using a PCG-505TR which is one of the earlier models of the superslim design. I couldn't be happier. Everything works, and works well. I had no problems with sound / pcmcia / modem or X. It seems sony made a perfectly compatible laptop and decided they couldn't keep it that way. If there were a VAIO project I'd definately would want to contribute to it. I did seem to have problems with the base 2.1 boot floppy that sporadically rebooted the system. And since I didn't spring for the CD I installed via NFS. After installing the 2.2 series kernels I had 0 problems except for forgetting to recompile the pcmcia modules when I compiled my kernel with kpkg http://www.mlinux.org
Snd and X, pcg-505tr
Hello all, I have a Sony pcg-505tr which I'm very pleased with. I have however run into two probelms that I haven't quite figured out yet. First is with X. Using an external monitor proves to be quite difficult with this model. I'm using the neomagic xserver which is in the svga server. I'm running debian 2.2 frozen. On this laptop pressing the fn-f7 key combo should toggle between monitor, monitor-lcd, and lcd only. Generally if I try this while X is running I get a blank screen on both of the display devices. Toggling again will usually produce the monitor output. It seems very flakey and I can't seem to get any type of pattern to my actions that will produce the correct results. The worst part is when I do get both to work ... then my screen is shifted about 1/2" to right on the lcd and the monitor promptly cutting off part of my display. I would like to use this system for doing presentations. Any advice would be appreciated. The second problem I'm having is our LUG icecast's its meetings to our members that can't attend physically. This is a replacement laptop for the one I had previously and I use my system as a backup incase the main icecast / encoder isn't available. I have gotten it all to work quite smoothly however : (there's always a but right?) I can't get the audio IN jack to work on this puppy. We use an external mike to increase sound quality and even though the internal mike on this thing works very well its not that great in a meeting environment. Using the mixer and turning everything up except the mic input (which I decrease all the way) doesn't work. I was wondering if anyone has tried this on a similar model. Keith Geffert
Re: PCMCIA modules recompilation: Undefined symbols
I've been running potato for a while and have upgraded kernels when they released new ones into the distribution points. So, I use kpkg to make my custom kernels and I've done it three or four times now and I've got my routine now. But since this last kernel image/pcmcia modules update I've gotten the same thing as you have. > I needed to recompile a kernel to support some hardware on my laptop. > Thus also the PCMCIA modules needed to be build. I issued: > make-kpkg modules_clean > make-kpkg modules_image > and installed. All went fine. Re: useful laptop specific apps?
Noah, Well I use some utilities of my own brew. You can download "sn" from http://www.penguingurus.com/projects/ This acts like su, or sg except for networks. You can "sn home" or, "sn work" and change networks on the fly without having to eject cards or anything like that. It will support as many profiles as you care to handle and should handle dhcp and stuff fine. I migrate between 3 to 4 networks per day with my laptop. Keith Noah Meyerhans wrote: > life easier. Hello all, I finally convinced myself that I wanted to upgrade past potato. I had a desktop I did last week and I figured out all my little issues with Xfree 4 (course that was a mach64). Well I let dist-upgrade chew for a while and once I finally got it finished I added all the stuff for X v4. I issue a startx and and it goes into a graphics mode. But the dotted background or cursor doesn't appear. The xserver starts taking up 97% of the cpu and the keyboard and all stops responding. I have to ssh into to it to shutdown X. At that point the HW is pretty much munged and have to reboot to get control back. I have a sony PCG 505TR, with a neomagic Magicgraph 128 (2048MB). It has a 10.4" xbrite TFT display. I had xfree version 3 pretty well tweaked out. Thanks, Keith
