Port replicator on Gateway 9300
I have a Gateway Solo 9300 and MD-3 port replicator. I'd love to be able to use the replicator with Linux for something more than a place to connect the AC adaptor . What is necessary in order to use the video, mouse and keyboard ports on the replicator? My system is running woody with a 2.2.19 kernel. I've been unsuccessful getting 2.4.x compiled and working. The 2.4.x kernel compiles, but the PCMCIA package won't. Any help is appreciated. -- Darryl L. Smart relay setting for Exim...
I use my laptop both at home and at work. I've been completely unable to send email to a few mailing lists for some reason, and have narrowed it down to Exim complaining about retry timeouts connecting to their mail servers. When I switched to using my ISP's smart relay, everything started working properly. My question, is there a way to configure Exim to use my ISP's SMTP server and my SMTP server at work without having to manually change settings when I go from one place to the other? -- Darryl L. Inspect your /etc/init.d/pcmcia script. It may be trying to 'insmod' modules instead of 'modprobe'ing them, with the result being that dependent modules are not loaded correctly. I had a similar problem, and fixed it by modifying the script to 'modprobe' the pcmcia modules. Another is to make sure that /etc/default/pcmcia has PCIC="yenta_socket" rather than PCIC="i82365" since the 2.4 kernels don't have that module. -- Darryl L. Getting close with the port replicator...
Going into my BIOS and setting the "Operating System" option from "Windows 95/98" to "Other" caused Linux to suddenly realize that there are two more PC sockets! But, unfortunately, every PC NIC I've tried in the sockets has failed, save one 3Com card that I borrowed for shits and giggles. The NIC I normally use (3Com 3c575) comes up with a funky vendor & device of 0x. I brought into work my spare wired card (D-Link DFE-660) and it gets the same thing. But, my IBM v.34 fax/modem card is detected just fine as a serial device as /dev/ttyS2. But, for whatever reason, I can't get my 3Com to work in the sockets on the replicator. ACPI battery monitor for Gnome...
I've tried using the standard battery monitor for Gnome, but it reports the current battery status and then immediately dies and has to be reloaded. I did configure it for ACPI. The other (battstat-applet) constantly fluctuates between reporting the current chage and 0%, at which point it throws up a dialog that's annoying. Is there a decent, working battery monitor for ACPI-enabled kernels? I'm using 2.4.18 kernel now. -- Darryl L. Smart relay setting for Exim...
I use my laptop both at home and at work.
