Kernel 2.6.xx

2005-04-10 Thread Atanas Atanasov
Dear All,

This is my first post in the mailing list and I am sorry if it
contains an stupid question. I am a debian newbie.

I would like to install debian 3.0 r4 woody on a laptop (hp nx 9020).
After I do a proper installation with vanilla kernel I should replace
it with a 2.6 kernel. Is there a debian flavour of the 2.6 kernel or I
should just get the original from kernel.org.

If any of you have passed through this, help.

Thanks,
Atanas Atanasov

I will keep in mind that sarge uses 2.6 kernel. I am asking for it
because I read in many sites that this kernel runs well with laptops
and it contains many improvements from 2.4. Actually I started
downloading woody and I have the first several CD-s. Isn't it possible
just to recompile the core from 2.6 sourcecore and to make it run
fine, or you suggest sarge as a more innovative distro supporting
laptops without a lot of bothering.

Ok I might change my mind and start downloading sarge, or just order it. Anyway.

How many of the CDs do I need for a woody installation. I do not mean
only a workstation because I might start putting sever stuff which
will need more CDs unfortunately.

Where can I get the source of the sarge kernel, so that I will try to
install it on a woody.

I plan to test the distros first. I might put a woody and get a
compiled core. Then I will see with the rest. If the only problem with
2.4 is ACPI then no worries. I read that it doesn't support wireless,
bluetooth, touchpad and many other typical laptop things.

Ok, I will finally decide on sarge. Anyway can I get this necessary
package from somewhere and put it with the 2.6 on woody.

And by the way. When I went to the resellers list it was written that
most of them sell the distros for less than $5. Then I checked their
sires and didn't find anything less than $15. Strange. If you know a
cheeper reseller which has international delivery and privides sarge,
please write.

I am totally convinced - sarge is the best. Initially I started with
woody because the rest had the "testing" label which could mean many
things especially when it concerns linux.

I hoped that I will be able to buy a cheaper sarge distro but in vain.
I don't want to gove that money if I know that all those guys do is cd
burning and download.

I am getting the netinst cd for sarge. I only doubt whether I will
manage to make it run with my network. I have got my computer running
Win, so I will be connection the laptio to it and sharing the internet
connection (as I do with another laptop). Would this netcd be able to
get with the network, recognize the lan adapter and notice the
internet connection sharing?

I am afraid the same might happen to me. That's why my initial idea
was to use the ready cd-images and have them burned.

A friend of mine has bought sarge on CDs from an online reseller
relatively cheap. Unfortunatelly I cannot find him now and ask where
did he get this from. He actually mentioned a price about $10-$15 with
delivery which is almost incredible for 14 CDs.

So can I set up a normal workstation with those first 3 CDs that you
recomment. And if later on I need to put some server stuff I would
just download it. During the installation how do I know which packages
are on the first 3 CDs so that I will limit my choice only to them.

I prefer getting the isos because at home I am short of bandwidth. On
the other habd I can download more on another place, say using torrent
or something like this. Just need to know how many of the first CDs I
need for a workstation, not very limited.

I would like to ask a quite strange question. I know this might not be
the exact place, but sitll hope that anyone might help.

I have a 40gb hard with just 1 partition on it - NTFS. I want to make
it just 10gb (the data on it is about 5gb). I read that knoppix and
then qtparted should help. But unfortunately it cannot do my job.
Qtparted stucks when comes for resizing, the window just halts kind of
and nothing continues. But I still need to safe the WinXP on the
primary NTFS.

If someone has done this trick please help.

Thanks, beforehand.
