NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS?

2009-03-11 Thread Nima Azarbayjany
Dear all,

I am planning to buy a new HP notebook. The model that has caught my eyes
comes with an "NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS" graphics card. Can any one tell me
how well is this graphics card supported under Lenny? Is it possible to
have compiz running on this graphics card? I did some search on this but I
am really confused. Some say yes and some say no.

Thanks,
Nima

My answer is simple; I suggest that you download and write a LiveCD
image, and try running it in the computer that you want to buy.

It is a fairly good way to find whether components such as the graphics
card, are compatible.

I did in fact thought of doing this but it is not doable for me. What is
the most general way of determining whether a specific piece of hardware is
supported by Debian? Things on the web seem quite confusing to me.

Thanks.

Debian uses the Linux kernel (the Linux in Debian GNU/Linux!) and
therefore supports pretty much everything the upstream Linux kernel
supports. It is the same kernel. That much is pretty simple. The
patches applied specifically for Debian are rather small by comparison
to most other distros.

The first point where it gets confusing is when a hardware driver's
distribution license legally prevents it from being freely
distributed. Debian will be legally bound in that case and can't
distribute the driver even if one exists.

The second often confusing point is when a driver exists but only in a
non-free format. Again in this case Debian won't distribute it
because it conflicts with a basic rule of Debian's "Social Contract"
which is that "Debian will remain 100% free". This is a stand that is
taken because Debian feels it important enough to do. As a political
topic this issue gets a *lot* of discussion on the debian-devel
mailing list, please let's not debate it here. But please do read
Debian's Social Contract to understand the published rules.

  http://www.debian.org/social_contract

Having said all of that the nvidia driver isn't a free driver. This
is why it can't be installed automatically at debian-installer time.
It has previously been made available in the non-free repository. You
would need to specifically install it from non-free if you wanted it.
The non-free repository officially isn't part of Debian. It is a
contribution. But it is there nonetheless. NVIDIA uses the linux
driver themselves and therefore it has generally been of good quality.

So in my mind the best question to ask is whether the nvidia driver in
non-free is new enough to support the 9200M GS. If so then it should
work. I would expect that it would work. The PTS page at
http://packages.qa.debian.org/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers.html lists
the current version in Lenny at 173.14.09. A posting here at
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NjUxNA says that
173.14.05 and later should support GeForce 9 Mobile parts. Better
would be to find a report of someone else who has the same machine
hardware and has reviewed it for compatibility.

The wiki page at http://wiki.debian.org/DeviceDatabase/PCI lists the
free nv driver (perhaps not what you want) as working on the 9200.
The nvidia page at http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html lists
the GeForce 9200M GS 0x06E8 as supported.

If you decide to try it please post your results. Then when the
next person searches for this combination they will get a review
noting it as either success or failure.

Good luck!

Bob

Good news Nima, I happen to have an HP amd64 notebook with the same graphics
card, and my display works perfectly with Lenny v 5.0.0 (stable). So you
probably won't have any issues either!

Yes, there is.

At least in my notebook, the only uncommented lines (without '#' at the
beginning of the line) in this file has something like this:

blacklist module_name
blacklist another_module_name

And so on ...

Look carefully the lines indicated by the error message and you'll see what's
wrong with it.

See you!

Hi John,

you inadvertently modified /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, probably by typing
apt-get install linus-headers-2.6.26-1-amd64 >> etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
or something similar. Just edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist with your
favorite editor, delete line 63 onwards (you can delete any line not
starting with "blacklist" in there) and save it.
Additionally, you don't have the ndiswrapper kernel module. Why don't
you follow the official instructions at

Poorly, if you want 3D support, as it will require the binary-only
NVIDIA driver. Fairly poorly, also, for 2D-only with the free NV
driver.

In general an NVIDIA video chipset is not a great idea.

That would be because it depends significantly on your willingness to
run the non-free NVIDIA drivers.

It's not as hard as at looks ;). But this list is there to help, so
let's divide it into tiny simple steps:

1. >> you inadvertently modified /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, (...)
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist is a system file. (I assume you have a basic
knowledge what a file is, if not, just ask.) It is read by some programs
(notably modprobe) to determine which kernel modules shouldn't be loaded
and is usually used to block broken or outdated modules. A kernel module
is a program that runs with special privileges, for example a driver.
Special privileges mean that it is allowed to directly interact with
your hardware unlike other programs you may use.
You typed or copied a command that added garbage to this file. This is
not a serious problem, and easy to resolve:

2.
>> edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist with your favorite editor,
You know how to get a root shell, right? That's the program you're
typing commands in; it displays lines like this one:
EXCALIBUR:/home/DRIVER#

Depending on your configuration, you have different editors installed
(an editor is program that allows you to make changes and view a text
file, just like /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist). If any of these commands
results in a short error message, just skip to the next one.

If you got KDE, try this:
  kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
For GNOME:
  gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
nano, a simple text editor:
  nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
or vi, available everywhere:
  vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

See a pattern? The first word you type is the program you execute, and
all other words are arguments telling the program what exactly you want.
Text editors usually open the files you tell them in the arguments.

3.
>> delete line 63 onwards (you can delete any line not
>> starting with "blacklist" in there) and save it.
Look around the file. There will be some lines starting with "#". These
are comments and are ignored by any programs reading them. Additionally,
there will be lots of lines starting with "blacklist", usually preceded
by a comment why that particular module is blacklisted. Leave those and
scroll down. You will find some lines that start neither with "#" nor
"blacklist". Delete those. In kwrite, gedit and nano, this is
straight-forward. VI is more complex, you need to type the following:

:63d99[Press Enter]
:wq[Press Enter]

4.
> Additionally, you don't have the ndiswrapper kernel module. Why don't
> you follow the official instructions at
>
http://wiki.debian.org/NdisWrapper#head-dcf7b280d908028971b8420f6f8008687f89cde5
> for that?

Follow the link. The parts in gray must be copied verbatim to the
command line for ndiswrapper to work. Read the full text before issuing
any commands. You only need the chapter "Debian packages" to install the
ndiswrapper kernel module. As an inexperienced user, might I recommend a
graphical user interface for ndiswrapper? Type/copy
aptitude install ndisgtk && ndisgtk
to start one.

If you run in any additional problems, ask again. Please tell us what
step(1-4) you're having problems with. Also, as a beginner to Linux, and
using problematic hardware, you might be interested in a distribution
specifically catered for beginners, for example Ubuntu. They go the
extra mile to have some features - like wireless networking - installed
by default.
While I hope this mailing list can help you, asking someone who is
knowledgeable about Linux for help can really speed things up;
especially if that someone is physically in front of your laptop. If you
don't know anyone, that's not a problem: There are many people who like
Linux and can help you near you. Just pick the nearest user group from
http://www.linux.org/groups/
, and ask them if and when they can help. Take your laptop to their
meeting and let them deal with the ugly and show you the nice corners of
Linux.

Greetings from Germany,

Philipp Hagemeister

I filed a bug report with xorg:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20536. Please add to it if you
like. Also, someone filed a report with Debian last summer, which has yet
to even be answered: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=491230.
Disturbing.

Thanks John for the good news. You mean compiz also runs without problems?
Have you used the free drivers or the non-free NVIDIA drivers?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the very informative email. I love to learn all this from you
nice people. I really hope to master things fast enough so I can soon
contribute something to these very reach mailing lists. I adore Debian and
the people who play around with it.

I will buy my new laptop (this or another model) within one or two weeks and
will post of my success or failure.
