Re: very poor performance of DVD using vesa or fglrx-driver

2006-05-20 Thread Takis Diakoumis
i know this was just posted up but...

it really sounds like the dvd isn't running in DMA mode. i had this
problem on my thinkpad at first, dvd would be choppy as you suggest,
music i played would also be. fixed it by enabling DMA on the drives -
in my case it was actually using the wrong kernel module for the drives.

check the output of dmesg (as suggested by another) or the output of
hdparm -I

hope this helps.

2006-05-20 Thread Reza Shafaati

Hi
I have bought a second hand Clevo 2200T notbook but it have a problem.
There is a Celeron 1300Mhz (100/1.5) cpu on it and when I turn it on
its cpu goes hot (Very hot) and finally after 1 hours turn off
immediately .
I chek and compare its SW6 jumper and seems are az currect az manual.
I test something on it: When I select bus 66 (866Mhz) from SW6 jumpers
its cpu do not hot very much and I can work but I like to work in
1300Mhz with bus 100.
Please help me and say to me the way to fix it by my self becouse I am
an Electronics engineer and think can fix it if you guide me.
Best Regards.

wpasupplicant dhcp ifplugd

2006-05-20 Thread Winfried Geis
Hello,

although I have read a lot of tips in the lists and the bug-tracking
system of wpasupplicant, concerning the "update", which renamed my
config file and removed the init script, I did not manage to get my wlan
working again.

My configuration:
IBM Thinkpad R52 -> ipw2200 driver, version 1.0.8
Kernel-Version: 2.6.15
ifplugd

My old (working until the update) wpa_supplicant.conf:

--
# Minimal /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf to associate with open
#  access points. Please see
#  /usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf.gz for more complete
#  configuration parameters.

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0

ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1

### Associate with any open access point
### Scans/ESSID changes can be done with wpa_cli
network={
ssid="PENTHOUSE"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
proto=WPA
pairwise=TKIP
psk="My very secret passphrase"
group=TKIP
}

---
Now, I tried to reconfigure my system, following the documentation in
/usr/share/doc/wpasupplicant via /etc/network/interfaces, which looks
like this:

---

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# ifplugd brings up interfaces, so do not bring them up at startup.
noauto eth0 eth1

# Both Ethernet and Wifi interfaces are managed automatically
mapping eth0
script guessnet-ifupdown
map default: foreign
map timeout: 3
map verbose: true

mapping eth1
script guessnet-ifupdown
map default: wpa
map timeout: 3
map verbose: true

iface foreign inet dhcp

iface wpa inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-ssid PENTHOUSE
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-passphrase "Again the secrect phrase"
wireless-mode Managed

--

Now from the time I am booting I hear the beeping of the ifplug-daemon
up/down/up/down

wavmon says, that the access-point is there, but:

encryption: n/a

When I started wpa_cli -i eth1, it said:

Trying to associate with 00:0f:3d:e0:c7:d3 (SSID='PENTHOUSE' freq=0 MHz)
<2>Associated with 00:0f:3d:e0:c7:d3
<2>WPA: 4-Way Handshake failed - pre-shared key may be incorrect
<2>CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
<2>CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys

Can someone do anything with this messages?

Re: very poor performance of DVD using vesa or fglrx-driver

2006-05-20 Thread B Thomas

Hi,

DMA is enabled as far as I can see.

hdparm report "Capabilities" as :

DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5*udma6
 Cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns

dmesg shows :
ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xBFA8 irq 15
ata2: dev 0 ATAPI, max UDMA/33
ata2: dev 0 configured for UDMA/33

I think problem may be more to do with the yv12 overlays. But I
find it surprising that this should not be supported by the
fglrx-driver or the VESA driver. I am not sure how I can
confirm this or find a workaround.

Re: No Sound from CD but DVD/MP3 sound is fine

2006-05-20 Thread B Thomas
Hi,

goobox does indeed work very well. I am a bit surprised though. The
sound card Intel High Definition Audio (ICH7 chipset) is an "onboard"
sound card. So I don't see why there should be this issue of "cabling".
Should I talk to Dell support ? I would like to avoid it because the
first thing I did after I got the laptop was to delete WindowsXP. And
I am pretty sure the first thing they will tell me when I report my
problem is that they don't support linux (essentially blaming the
problem on linux).

sincerely

I ran into this same thing when I was setting up my media center. I
resolved it by changing the version of mplayer I was using to a more
optimized version (from 386 to 686) and am currently using mplayer-nogui
1.0-pre7 which has been working quite well.

There's nothing you can do, a lot of laptops are made this way.
As for the "onboard" thing, that doesn't change anything about the
cabling requirement.

I don't think this is the right mailing list; since I don't believe this is
debian related, but I guess your laptop is just very dusty.

Take it apart, and clean the air compartments and the fan, and it should be
working fine again.

If you cannot open it, try if you can clean the fan and airchannel by blowing
into it, or use a compressor to blow it clean.

Re: help me

Seconded, use a good quality can-of-air and spray into the laptop air
intake. I had a similar problem with my 2nd hand thinkpad, clearing
the intakes and exhausts did no end of good. Keep the can vertical
though, or you may find yourself spraying your CPU with insta-freeze.

Cheers,

Its not linux related but hardware related. Your CDrom Audio cable is
not connected to the soundcard's CD Audio slot. Most likely, to save
space, Laptops doesnt have CD audio slot's in their soundcards. On
windows it'll work because windows includes 'Digital Audio Extraction'
for CD/DVD roms. A similar driver for linux will do the trick.
