Re: Suspend2-patch vs Debian Sarge (official) kernel 2.6.8-16sarge1

2006-03-08 Thread Krzysztof Wilk

Hi Luca,

I have been running Debian Sarge and Linux 2.6 for quite a long time.
My configuration looks as follows:
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite A50-106
SUSPEND core : 2.2-rc16
 - Kernel Version : 2.6.15
 - Compiler vers. : 3.3 (gcc)

It works for me without problems.
If you prefer using Debian kernels, I cannot help because I never used them.

Best,
Chris

USB problem on ASUS

2006-03-08 Thread gnustikos

Hi folks

I have a following problem with usb on Debian Sarge (ASUS A6B00R laptop):
I link to this port optic mouse and wireless keyboard.
After a couple of minutes (it's rather difficult to describe this time,
I would even say impossible because this problem sometimes occurs after
1 minute and sometimes after 40 minutes) mouse stops and the wireless
keyboard with it.
Laptop's touchpad and keyboard still work without any problems but when
I am trying to switch to text console (ctrl+alt+f1) computer hangs till
I disconnect mouse from usb port. I tried to put the mouse to port again
but it didn't work any longer (though the red under the mouse was visible).
I am using the kernel (2.6.14.4) with HID driver built in (I've tried to
built it as module but it wasn't a solution).
I've checked two mice and I am pretty sure that mouse has nothing to do
with this problem.
I can even say it is not USB problem because on windows (I am forced to
work on it because of this problem :) it works fine.

The output from of "lspci" and "uname -a" and some more information
about your hardware should be of help.

I've got an Notebook from IBM Thinkpad T21.

Try to understand what hardware you've got by running the following command
   lspci
then google for Linux + the relevant output line for your sound chip.

Maybe also the volume is set to 0, try installing aumix and run it to
increase the volume.

I just read a thread on this in French on Lea-Linux. See
http://lea-linux.org/pho/read/20/281436/282959

If you don't read French, apparently this problem is worked on in the
latest CVS of Alsa, to support your Realtek ALC260

I cannot help more, not having this chipset.

Is there a way to know if lspci or lsusb is needed? Apart from try and
error, y'know...:-) What about the "enable wireless" button? What is that
all about?
Where can I find information on this? You know, I've just purchased the
laptop and feel naturally worried:-)

Thanks in advance...

Juanjavier Martínez.

Firstly the button. Look in the manual (there will be one online if you
do not have a physical one).

Where?

(...) is worth installing the acerhk package to see if it enables the button.

I found it in the «unstable» debian repository in www.kanotix.com.

I am currently running «sarge» on the notebook. Is there any chance I could
install it w/no updates?

lspci and lsusb are very general utilities. The first one to try is lspci
and look in the output to see if there is anything that looks like a
wireless card.

lspci told me I have got a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [Airforce One] 54g 802,11g Wireless LAN
Controller (rev 02), as you can see in the attached lspci.txt file.

So the questions stays still there: How do I install acerhk?

As I recall acerhk is installed using modules_assistant. It is shipped as
source so you will need a relatively recent kernel and then you can
install. To get this sort of function working you will find unstable much
better than stable. Almost certainly it will not work with a 2.4 kernel,
but you might be lucky. I have only tried on a 2.6 kernel (.12 I seem to
recall). There is a web site which describes acerhk, Google will find it for
you.

Unfortunately the Broadcom wireless chips are badly supported by linux due
to Broadcom not making the relevant information available. There is a closed
source driver which has been around for a while, but there is also an open
source one which is being reverse engineered. I am not sure of its state.

I've got Acer 3023LMI that has got some Broadcom Wi-Fi card. I've installed ndiswrapper and used driver downloaded via acer.com
. To enable Wi-Fi card, I've used acer_acpi (http://www.archernar.co.uk/acer_acpi/acer_acpi_main.html) instead of acerhk. To install acer_acpi, download it and read INSTALL file.
