Re: Dependency problems with GNOME 2.12 in testing
I'm running a self-compiled vanilla kernel 2.6.12. I just tried 2.6.15 with the same result -- freeze in GNOME after about 6 minutes. Funny thing is: I can't downgrade to GNOME 2.10: # aptitude install gnome-desktop-data=2.10.2-1 tells me "Cannot find version 2.10.2-1 of package gnome-desktop-data." Same with "=2.10.2". Is there any way I can install a specific version of all the packages I upgraded yesterday? I'm afraid I cleaned /var/cache/apt too regularly, but there must be some other way to downgrade. xserver-xorg hangs with radeon / ati driver
Hi, seems like an xserver-xorg upgrade to 6.9.0 screwed up the radeon driver: Whenever I log in, I just have to wait between 5 and 20 minutes before X hangs. Keyboard and mouse input is ignored, nothing works except hard reboot. I can't seem to be able to use fglrx, since fglrx-driver from testing AND unstable depend on xserver-xorg << 6.8.99. The package lists about a dozen bug reports related to this problem, but no real solution. I considered downgrading to xserver-xorg 6.8.2, but this doesn't work as packages.d.o is down and aptitude tells me it cannot find version 6.8.2... For me, the only way out of this dilemma is using the vesa driver which obviously doesn't support a resolution higher than 1024x768 (and believe me, this is not funny when working with Eclipse!). So, I wondered if anyone would be willing to share his/her .deb of xserver-xorg version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 by hosting it and sending the link? (Or just telling me where to download it. I feel like I searched everywhere.) Thanks, André -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ALSA sound lost in KDE after going to kernel 2.6.15
Okay... this one is very strange. When I boot my laptop with 2.6.12, it boots right into KDE and I hear the welcome sound during the login splash screen. When I boot with 2.6.15, I don't hear the welcome sound and none of the sound players produce any sound... whether using a GUI player or if I use a console player like mplayer. HOWEVER, if I then run alsaconf in a konsole window, alsaconf unloads all of the drivers and reloads them. THEN, all of the sound players work in KDE (and mplayer works in a konsole window). If I reboot after configuring ALSA, the sound is gone again. Every time, I have to boot to KDE, then run alsaconf, and then I can use sound. But it gets even more strange. If I boot into KDE, then run alsaconf and get sound, and then kill kdm to get back to a text console (where mplayer still makes sound) and then run KDE again, sound is gone *again*. So, it's not something wrong with ALSA at boot time (or else running alsaconf would fix it for the entire uptime... regardless of how many times I killed and restarted kdm). In other words, any time KDE is run, ALSA will be broken (both in KDE and from a console if I kill kdm) until alsaconf is run (either from a Konsole window or from a text console). Video Driver
Hello!!! I have an Acer Aspire 3002LCI laptop with Debian Sarge 3.1 installed on it and I'm using the VESA driver which gives me a resolution of 640x480. I want to know what driver I must choose when running xf86config to get better resolutions. My lscpi (just what is related to video): :00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 760/M760 Host (rev 03) :01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661FX/M 661FX/M661MX/741/M741/760/M760 PCI/AGP I've tried some sis drivers but they don't start X normally, leading me to a black screen. If it happens and I type CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE I return to the shell (without seeing it) and I can type commands normally. Thanks for the attention!!! Regards -- Henrique
Re: Video Driver
One more question. When I boot my system directly to X (passing 5 at inittab) it stops at a login screen and it enters in blackbox (the X manager that I am using) but without running bbkeys. I've put the "/usr/bin/bbkeys &" command in the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file before "/usr/bin/blackbox" but it just works if I boot at level 3 and type startx in the shell. I've tried copying the xinitrc file to ~/.xinitrc but it didn't work too. Thanks!!! Re: SOLVED: ALSA sound lost in KDE after going to kernel 2.6.15
Joe Emenaker wrote: In other words, any time KDE is run, ALSA will be broken (both in KDE and from a console if I kill kdm) until alsaconf is run (either from a Konsole window or from a text console). Okay, I've tracked the problem down a little more. It appears that the Alsa mixer gets all of its levels (except the master volume) reset to zero and muted when KDE runs. I've checked the levels with both the alsamixer console app and also with KMix and they both have all of the mixer channels at zero. This happens even though I've adjusted the volumes properly and then saved the levels with "alsactl store" I've worked around the problem by going to the KMix configuration and turning off "Restore volumes on login", but I don't understand why it wasn't *saving* the old volumes from the last session. Does that only happen if I do a "Save Session" in the "K Menu"? - Joe smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature
apt-getable 2.6 kernel snapshots [Fwd: snapshots archive]
Hello, This may be useful for people who would like to try out if the latest kernel helps to overcome kernel/driver related problems on laptops. Currently it builds s390, powerpc and i386 binaries. If someone is willing to spend some (or better, much) cpu power to build other arches, he may ask for upload permissions or w-b access.
