Re: Sarge on Presario 2200

2005-05-10 Thread Lian Liming
I am using Presario V2000, and encounter the same problem.
My solution is when booting, use right CTRL+C to terminate the loading
of i810_audio, you should press the key right before the loading!

Then the system will go on to boot but without module for net card.
After booting, use "modprobe 8139too" (it is the net card driver for
v2000) to enable the module for net card.

Using this method, you can log into the system. Next work should be
recompiling the kernel that is what I am doing now.

Almost totally black screen

2005-05-10 Thread Gustavo Tourinho
Hi again.

After setup X server using

I can see the kdm greeting but it is almost black.

My question is, how can I up the brightness of LCD display?

Thanks in advanced,

Extending the size of my display

2005-05-10 Thread Darryl Pierce
My laptop (Toshiba Satellite 2430-S255) display can do 1024x768.
However, I have it connected to a monitor most of the time which can
handle higher resolutions. I would like to configure it so that I can
increase the resolution when connected to the monitor and then
decrease it when I'm disconnected. However, no matter how I configure
the display, it always goes to just 1024x768.

So _how_do_you_ configure it?
Are there any hints in /var/log/XFree86.0.log ?

I have my system using the nVidia module for Xwindows. As for
configuring it, I used dpkg to install/configure the system and don't
touch xf86config/xf86cfg at all.

Anything with a warning or error - usually more modelines are specified in the
config, but are suppressed by X for various reasons.

The options you specify in the configure script would be helpful (maybe
extract that portion of /var/cache/debconf/config.dat and send it here).

You definitely need to.
If you are using 2.6 kernel, OSS is depreciated, ALSA is the standard and is
much better.

i810_audio is part of OSS.

I've got a Toshiba M30, and am also using the nvidia driver.
I am switching a lot between beamers, CRTs etc. ,
so I am not using debconf at all, IIRC it also did not handle my
default display's resolution of 1024x800 correctly - so I use to
edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 by hand. I don't want to discourage you
from trying to manage your config with debconf, but it sure is quite
painless to copy your XF86Config-4 to p.e. XF86Config-4-debconf,
remove the debconf marks in it and try some configurations with different
display settings -I bet, that debconf actually ignores your extra resolutios.
I appended my own /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as an example; don't simply
copy it, if you display can't handle 1024x800.

Cheers,

Woody vs Sarge vs debian variants on older equipment

2005-05-10 Thread dbp lists
Hi folks...

I just purchased a 570E thinkpad (PIII 500MHz) last week. As well as a
Cisco 340 Aironet wireless card. I'm hoping to install linux on it and
am trying to do as much homework as I can before they get here. I've
searched a lot on the topic of installing debian on the 570E and have
found some good information, but it's a little patchy and/or dated.

I've found one post saying that SimplyMepis is the way to go, and then
another post saying that Ubuntu is *really* the way to go... stating
that the Cisco 340 wireless card can be automatically detected and installed.

I've run woody on a server at home for years now and have enjoyed just
using it.  I've read,
however, that if I'm going to go with straight debian on a laptop -
it's better to go
with Sarge. I'm pretty confused now. Antoher thing I'm not sure
about is if I should go with
kernel 2.4 or 2.6. I don't plan on using any fancy peripherals, esp
since the laptop
doesn't have usb 2.0, only 1.1. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

ps. And I already know about not installing i2c or lmsensors when
configuring the kernel.
(although I do wonder if this is only for 2.4 or for 2.6 as well.)

The main difference is in how the kernel supports your hardware. The Woody
installer uses a fairly ancient kernel which may not support your
hardware properly and cause problems during the installation.
The RC3 version of the installer for Sarge [1] has a choice of either the
2.4.27 or 2.6.8 kernel (see Fx helpscreens) and much better hardware
detection (and is more user friendly in general).

What kernel you should go with depends entirely on your hardware. Some
systems seem better supported by 2.4.27, others by 2.6.8.
Some others have acpi problems with 2.6.8 and are happier with the
2.6.10/11 kernels available in unstable, although you can only upgrade to
those after installation.

Ubuntu uses basically the same installer as Debian Sarge, but with a
2.6.10 kernel and therefore works better in some cases.

Cheers,
FJP

Thanks for the advice. Since my equipment is pretty old (circa 1999),
I will probably go
with kernel 2.4. Some of the howto's I'm finding on the internet
discuss using even kernel 2.2 with Redhat 7.1.

I felt shaky about going with just debian, but after seeing the Raj
Kombiyil's howto at
http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~wanderlust/wireless.htm, I feel much more
confident.

I haven't used the debian installer ever since I always install on no
frills boxes, which is why I'm a little nervous about installing onto
a laptop and wireless card. But actually, it looks like its not too
bad.

My plan is to go with Sarge and try to use the installer. If
everything works but the wireless card, I'll just install that
manually using the howto I found above. But if no reasonable
functionality is obtained (which I highly doubt), I just might try
Ubuntu.

Thanks

Personally, I would go with Sid. I'm running it on all desktop-class
machines (2 notebooks, one desktop). Choosing between Sarge and Woody, I
would go with Sarge for a notebook. The new installer, 2.6 kernel, newer
XFree86, newer window managers etc. are worth it. It's officially frozen
now, so should become the new stable branch "real soon now"(tm), so no big
issues should appear.

I never had a Cisco card, so I don't know what chipset it uses, but having
hotplug, pcmcia support and wireless-tools installed, you have a big change
of having the card autodetected. You might need to have to configure it by
hand, however. ("might" meaning here "I always do it manually so I don't
know if there is any clicking tool for it").

Note that sid is likely become a lot more unstable (literally) when sarge
is released as some major changes are implemented. The past year or so
has been relatively quit in that respect because we were working towards
releasing.

Using unstable (or even testing) in the period after a new release is not
for all users.

pcmcia wireless adaptor, hw fault or kernel bug?

2005-05-10 Thread Gabriele Persia
Hi all,

I'm running debian/testing on a Travelmate 525txv.
When downloading large files, the prismGT (prism54) cardbus card
"freezes" (and sometime hangs the system).

What works:
- system boots fine with the card plugged;
- when I plug [unplug] the card, hotplug brings up [remove] the interface (as
expected);
- browsing the lan/Internet;
- UPLOADING files of ANY size;
- downloading of "small" files;

What doesn't work:
- downloading of big file (>3Mb)
(buffer-to-disk problem?)

Tried with many combination of
- kernels (2.4.27, 2.6.8, 2.6.10)
- firmware version (isl3890 v1.0.3.0 and v1.0.4.3)
- driver settings (txpower, channels, key on/off)
...they all shows the same behaviour.

Mepis3.3 and Knoppix3.7 don't work either.

If I unplug the card, the frozen system resumes working.
