Interesting. Mine worked off the bat with 2.4.x. There are some
issues with it though, as I remember reading something about it on
the Mepis site (either mepis.org or mepislovers.org). My issue
started when I wanted to switch between the "eraser head" on the
road and an USB wireless at home. No easy way. Mepis DOES have a
new recently released iso out there that may address some of these
problems, but I have not had time to take a look at it though.

I've been very happy with mepis overall though, as most things (even
a wireless nic!) "just worked".

I recently bought a D-Link DWL-122 with the intention of using it on
my Compaq IA1 ("internet appliance" flashed to Midori Linux). So
far, it has not worked on the 7400/Ubuntu or the IA1/Midori.

I also bought a USB to traditional keyboard and mouse adapter for the
IA1 (the infra-red keyboard is of limited use). I was surprised to
find that it worked both with the IA1 and the 7400/Ubuntu/2.4.x.
That is, Ubuntu/2.4.x does not work with the eraser head, but has no
problem with a USB mouse.

I posed my 2.4.x eraser head problem on a Mepis forum and the only
response I got was "don't use 2.4.x, use 2.6.x".

You are correct. The eraser head does *not* work with 2.4.x in Mepis.
As I was thinking this through, the reason I started using an external
usb mouse was because under 2.6.x (in which the earaser head worked
fine) I could not access my usb thumbdrives! I would get errors at
startup wondering if the cable was connected no matter if there was
anything there or not. Using 2.4.x I was able to access my thumb
drives, and navigate using the usb mouse.

While this is an irritation, the work around for me works fine. My
larger question is, if usb on Armada 7400 hardware is broke for 2.6.x,
will I have an upgrade path in the future to later 2.6.x, or are there
settings to correct this problem now?

Well, its GOTTA be something simple, since, in general, 2.4.x kernels
DO work on 7400s. I haven't tried it, but I suspect that dropping a
Debian packaged kernel (one-size-fits-all) in a Ubuntu/Mepis system
would work.

Thanks for pointing out the USB problem; I seem to have it on
7400/Ubuntu/2.6.x. I had noticed that my USB camera did not work as
expected. Closer inspection with "watch tail /var/log/syslog" reveals
that the camera is not being properly detected. I have tested USB NICs
and attributed the failures to device incompatibility. I do use the USB
(still, not video) camera on 7400/Libranet/2.4.28. I may try testing a
Debian 2.6 kernel if I find time.

I've (at least temporarily) put aside get-ALSA-to-work on a
7400/Ubuntu.

My current project is getting CUPS printing to work remotely from a
Ubuntu. I have a Libranet CUPS server that works fine with Libranet
CUPS clients. With a Ubuntu client, it "sees" the network printer, but
does not actually print; print jobs accumulate in the Ubuntu client's
spool.

up arrow key doesnt work in X

2005-01-12 Thread Mark M
Hi, not sure if this is laptop or debian specific.

I have 1 key that doesn't work in X - the up arrow key. It works under
the console. I am not sure where to start looking to solve.

The Xconfig section is below. I am using gnome / metacity

I have an asus M6820R and am very happy with it. I used the 100MB
minimal debain install cd and only had 1 problem - the kernel panicked
on reboot. I am not sure if this was solved by specifying linux26 to
install 2.6 kernel, or by configuring with a small swap space (did both
changes at same time).

Thanks,
Mark

did you (accidentally) define it as shortcut?
(Desktop Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts)

cheers,

I made some tests vith videos and realized the one of the problem was
related to totem media player. I get much better results playing the
same video with vlc.
It's quite strange because I use totem even on my desktop (graphic card
is an old nvidia mx200) and both totem and wxvlc provide good results.
I tried to tweak configurations but all I found in gnome is
gstreamer-properties which is set on Xwindows(X11/XShm/Xv) on both pcs.

any idea about this different behaviour?

bye

PS I'm using non-free nvidia drivers on the desktop

Re: Cirrus Logic pd6729 & 2.6 kernel

2005-01-12 Thread Clayton
Hi John,

Thanks for the reply when did you post to debian.laptops? I read it quite
religiously and didn't see your post

After my original post I did some additional trolling around the linux-pcmcia
list archives and came away with the distinct impression (perhaps incorrect)
that 2.6.8 did not contain full support for the pd6729 and that there were some
patches trying to find there way in. So, I went back to my old Knoppix kernel
and coaxed it into giving me a network connection long enough to download the
latest Sarge 2.4.x and am now running fine with that. Took me a quite a while
to wring out all the issues that followed from trying to eradicate Knoppix,
though. I won't lightly install from Knoppix again.

Since this is a Pentium One I am not currently planning on rolling any
home-made kernels, so if that is what it takes I will probably just stick with
2.4 for now on this machine and try my luck with 2.6 on my Pentium III. If you
do find the solution, let me know though, I might run with it. :-)

Thanks for the PLIP information, I might set that up just for the heck of it,
also since I am going to try and set up this Pentium One as a router it might
free up one of my PCMCIA slots. (I have been looking for PCMCIA cards with
multiple ethernet ports, and they seem not to exist.)

Thanks again,
Clayton
