Just to complete it here, one can use secure shell:
in some xterm do
ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]or
ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Then start your favourite X application without specifying the display, i.e.

acroread

ssh will automatically forward the X application to your display, and you do not have to rely on the (possibly) limited security features of X11. The network connection is encrypted (as ssh does), so you can do this across untrusted nets.

Yes, thanks James, I forgot to mention this.

I decided to purchase the system without this WLAN card, and opted to
get one outisde of Dell. After some research I bought a miniPCI Proxim
802.11/a/b/g Gold Card from a local reseller and it works fine under
Linux using the madwifi driver.

So your problem isn't the PC card but the device itself (at least by this far),
right? Do you know who the maker of the PCMICA device and the model numbers
are? Since the information you provided is limited, I'm not going to ask one
question each post. Here's my experience:

AFAIK many Pentium laptop come with a model CL6729 (Cirrus Logic) PCMCIA device
, at least it happened to 3 of 4 my Pentium laptops from different makers. It
worked happily until Kernel 2.4.x. For Mandrake it works before (includes) MDK
8.1 and gone since 8.2. It was because from Kernel 2.4.x started to includ with
PCMCIA modules but not as many as pcmcia-cs done by David Hinds. CL6729
unfortunately happened to be the one not been covered. Someone suggested me to
recompile the kernel, I tried but didn't work because another hardware problem
occured. I didn't know how to solve it, so I sticked with mdk 8.1 until one day
I tried Debian. During the installation, I noticed there's an option in the
process of confiure PCMCIA where reminds to add with the parameter of 'fast_pci'
if using model CL6729. I did, and it works.

Now, go check your device and see if my experience works for you as well. Once
your device works but still have problem with zonet pc card, post it to here
again. Good luck!

Nick

cpu scaling on Dell 5150

2004-04-26 Thread Ivan Fernandez Pelaez
Hey everyone,

If anyone's got cpu frequency scaling working with a P4 maybe you can
tell me what I'm missing. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 5150 with a
3.06GHz Mobile Pentium 4, debian testing and 2.6.5 kernel. I seem to
have everything in place, cpu frequency scaling compiled into the
kernel, together with performance and powersave governors, userspace
governor as default, frequency tables helpers too, and the p4-clockmod
module as driver (I've also tried the acpi modules with the cpudyn -acpi
option). All the relevant files show up under
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/, cpudynd starts (also tried
cpufreqd and cpuspeed) and seems to load, but then it begins to switch
between "performance" and "powersave" constantly, with powersave only
lasting for about a second or so (I monitor this whole thing with the
gkrellm cpufreq plugin), and the clock speed never really goes down for
any significant amount of time, even though the processor load is under
10% most of the time, so I can notice no cooling or power saving at all.
CPU temperature is around 70C most of the time.

I use gkrellm to monitor most everything, but I assume that the cpu
speed that appears in the CPU krell is read from /proc/cpuinfo. If I
stop cupdyn and manually set powersave with "echo powersave >
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor" I cannot see a
noticable result in actual cpu speed either.

Thanks, here's the relevant section of my .config just in case:

Ignoring unknown interface eth1=hotplug.

Actually eth1 is a wireless built in device and I
think it shouldn't need hotplug.

How can I tell the system not to consider eth1 as
hotplug ?

Do you have any other ideas ?

Thanx

detecting ethernet connection

2004-04-26 Thread Bill Moseley
I'm looking for a utility to see if the internal interface is connected
-- the so-called "link-beat" detection. I have a toshiba laptop with
EtherExpress PRO/100+ MiniPCI.

I know about the laptop-net package, but I don't want all the
schema/profile setup, I just want to test for the link when switching
between wireless and wired setup.

My laptop is normally on the wireless card. The wireless is eth1 and
the built-in network interface is eth0.

Since it's normally on on the wireless I don't have eth0 brought up by
default at boot time just to save time.

What I'd like is:

  - at boot, if eth0 is connected then ifup eth0
  - on pcmcia insert (which is normally the case on boot)
bring down eth0 and bring up eth1
  - on pcmcia remove bring down eth1 and bring up eth0 if it's plugged
into the cable.

In other words, bring up eth0 only if the cable is connected.

BTW -- I looked at the man page for interfaces(5) and it doesn't seem like
there's a way to use a program's return value to decide if the interface
should be brought up or not:

The following "command" options are available for every family and
method. Each of these options can be given multiple times in a
single stanza, in which case the commands are executed in the
order in which they appear in the stanza. If one of the commands
fails, none of the others will be executed but the interface will
still be configured. (You can ensure a command never fails by
   suffixing "|| true".)

Which, I think it would be handy if a command fails then the interface
is not brought up. That would make it easy to have a command that tests
if the interface is actually connected.

You probably want the package "ifplugd". That'll let you configure
network interfaces when the cable is plugged in.

Try "apt-get install ifplugd" ... A fantastic tool using run-parts
to run on plug/unplug status.

I found that using powernowd instead of cpufreq worked like a charm. I
also found that gkrellm was not a good indicator of the processors
current speed - you get much better results by just 'cat'ing the
relevent file in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq

Hope that helps some

Hm, I cannot activate or deactivate the "last bar" a.k.a external and
it's already muted. Maybe this is something card dependend? Alsamixer

You could perhaps try a different mixer - I've had, uhh, mixed

I think I have the same card (Dell Inspiron 5150, snd_intel8x0 module);
mute/unmute works well for me with the external speakers through
alsamixer, but you may want to try the alsa commandline mixer and see if
it complains about something. In my system the command would be

amixer set 'External Amplifier' unmute

If 'External Amplifier' doesn't do anything, it may be another control
name, look at the output from amixer controls.

Re: cpu scaling on Dell 5150

2004-04-26 Thread Ivan Fernandez Pelaez
I've been trying powenowd for a few hours now, it does seem to work
better (frequency does not change in a second, and I like the scaling
approach better, as opposed to cpudyn's maximum or minimum thing).

However, I still have not seen a reduction in temperature, which is the
main reason I wanted this. Plus, I still find the discrepancy between
the frequency reported by
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed (which matches the
one reported in /proc/cpuinfo) and the one reported by x86info, culled
from the /dev/cpu/0/cpuid, which does not go down very much (only
occasionally and then only to around 1200MHz at the most). Which one
should I trust?

Sound, framebuffer and keyboard problems with a Toshiba 2410

2004-04-26 Thread Cournapeau David
Hi there,

I am a quite happy user of a toshiba 2410 under debian for more than
a year now. Most things work quite well, but some don't, and I fail to
see any way to resolve them on the internet.
Mostly because of the great ACPI support, I am using a 2.6.4 kernel
(standart sources from kernel.org, no patch). I have some problems,
which can be annoying:

   - I am using alsa for the sound. But there seems to be a problem:
when the kernel modprobe the modules, it says something like

" MC'97 1 converters and GPIO not ready (0xf200)
Apr 27 08:54:05 gabou-laptop kernel: intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock:
measured 49419 usecs
Apr 27 08:54:05 gabou-laptop kernel: intel8x0: clocking to 48000"

Does someone know what the first line means ?

   - I am trying to use the framebuffer. I know it works, because when
I tried a Gentoo, it booted in a nice 1024x768 console. Which modules do
I have to use for that ? Last time I try nvidia.ko from the frame buffer
modules directory, it stopped my laptop :( Can I use it with the
binary-only driver ? (the open source driver seems to poorly support my
chipset, which is a Geforce 4 for laptop)

   - I have a lot of messages like this one:

"Apr 27 09:19:25 gabou-laptop kernel: atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed
(translated set 2, code 0x39 on isa0060/serio0).
Apr 27 09:19:25 gabou-laptop kernel: atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes 39
' to make it known."

I know there is a problem with keyboard on Toshiba laptop, but didn't
find anything useful on this error message, and if it appears while I am
in a console (ie no in X), it can 'disable' the keyboard, which forces
me to reboot the laptop :(

   Thank you very much,

   David

Re: hotplug error at boot time

>>>** can't synthesize root hub events

The pci_hotplug kernel module talks to userspace /sbin/hotplug, which
uses the scripts that are grep'ed below.

I have this message, and it is benign.

Try this:

qaz:~# grep "synthesize pci" /etc/hotplug/*
/etc/hotplug/pci.rc: echo "** can't synthesize pci hotplug events"
qaz:~#
The solution is in the hotplug init scripts somewhere, though I have not
investigated yet myself. If you find anything out, you should post back
here.

Just to complete it here, one can use secure shell:
in some xterm do

ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]or
ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then start your favourite X application without specifying the display, i.e.

acroread

ssh will automatically forward the X application to your display, and you do
not have to rely on the (possibly) limited security features of X11. The
network connection is encrypted (as ssh does), so you can do this across
untrusted nets.

(You can ensure a command never fails by
   suffixing "|| true".)

Alsamixer

I think I have the same card (Dell Inspiron 5150, snd_intel8x0 module);
mute/unmute works well for me with the external speakers through
alsamixer, but you may want to try the alsa commandline mixer and see if
it complains about something. In my system the command would be

amixer set 'External Amplifier' unmute

If 'External Amplifier' doesn't do anything, it may be another control
name, look at the output from amixer controls.

Re: cpu scaling on Dell 5150

2004-04-26 Thread Ivan Fernandez Pelaez
I've been trying powenowd for a few hours now, it does seem to work
better (frequency does not change in a second, and I like the scaling
approach better, as opposed to cpudyn's maximum or minimum thing).

However, I still have not seen a reduction in temperature, which is the
main reason I wanted this. Plus, I still find the discrepancy between
the frequency reported by
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed (which matches the
one reported in /proc/cpuinfo) and the one reported by x86info, culled
from the /dev/cpu/0/cpuid, which does not go down very much (only
occasionally and then only to around 1200MHz at the most). Which one
should I trust?
