Help Re: Soundcard for Linux in Compaq

2003-08-24 Thread Sudeep Prajapati
Hello,
I have Compaq Presario US2561. I am facing the same problem with the
soundcard Acer - [ALi] M5451. However, I am just a beginner with Linux. I even
have problems following up with all the suggestions on the message board and
archives. For some reason my laptop cannot run 2.4.20-3-386, says system
panic. So I am running 2.4.18-bf2.4. If you have any suggestions please reply.
Any information will be highly appreciated.

Thank you,
Sudeep

Rob, thanks for the config file! I did a quick diff, saw that the
only two differences between our setups werre use of the kreame buffer
and use of 16 instead of 24-bit color... the color was the culprit.
HUGE help! I love debian lists!

subsidiary question: do you use an external mouse? my touchpad is
either a little sticky, or not configured quite right (I assume the
latter, since you reported no problems) -- the left-click button
doesn't seem to want to 'MouseUp' most of the time. For fun I tried
connecting a random USB mouse to the USB port, but even though the
config includes a second "generic mouse" in the server setup
(identical to the mouse setup on my desktop, which is where I pulled
the mouse in questio from), I couldn't get it to work. Did you have
to do anything fancy with the mice, like set up devices or something?

thanks again,
m

driver for this card had a bug which is fixed in 2.4.21 - see if that

I usually use a ps/2 mouse, but the touch pad and the stick mouse both
work fine(as do all the buttons) with the config that was created by
debconfig. I haven't tried to set USB up in the kernel yet, so I don't
know if I can help there.

I use an external mouse: it's just a matter of setting up a
second InputDevice entry. Here's my XF86Config-4 entry:

  Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "USB_Mice"
  Driver "mouse"
  Option "SendCoreEvents""true"
  Option "Device"
  "/dev/input/mice"
  Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
  Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
  Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
  EndSection

 ...

  Section "ServerLayout"
  Identifier "Default Layout"
  Screen "Default Screen"
  InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
  InputDevice "Builtin_Touchpad"
  InputDevice "USB_Mice"
  EndSection

You do have to hand-tweak it since debconf only sets up one
mouse for you. You'll probably want to move these two
sections past ### END DEBCONF SECTION area to protect it from future X
upgrades.

Actually, the Debian kernel-source packages have the ACPI patches applied.
However, if you are going to go to through the trouble of building a new
kernel (and if you are running Sarge or Sid), I would just grab a 2.6.0-testX,
either from Debian or the new -test4 that came out last night on kernel.org.

I have been running the new 2.6.0-test kernels since -test1 came out. I have
a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S401 and the new kernels are rock solid stable.
Here are the highlights as I see them:

- Latest ACPI code is already included in the vanilla kernel
- ALSA sound support is included in the vanilla kernel (OSS is deprecated)
- Latest DRI code (not quite bleeding edge but very recent) is included
(this doesn't really affect me since my video is not 3D accelerated)

The best part about the 2.6.0 ACPI support (at least for me) is that the BIOS
was blacklisted for ACPI in 2.4.21, becuase of non-conformance to the ACPI
standard, but a work around exists in the new kernel which allows me to use
ACPI. As a matter of fact the ACPI support in Linux is better than it ever
was with Windows Millennium (it came with the machine) and the proprietary
Toshiba utilities.
