Debian on Sotec 3120X / 3123X

2002-12-21 Thread Dirk Eddelbuettel

As I could not find any references with respect to Linux and this laptop
before I bought it, I thought I would drop a short note stating that Linux
works fine on it. So here it goes, in semi-random order:

* What is it?
An inexpensive ($950), 4.4 pound heavy, 12" screen with a Celeron 1200, 256mb
ram, dvd/cd-rw, and either a 20gb disk (3120X) or a 30gb disk (3123X). The
latter is available at Sam's Club, the other one at Wal Mart, Office Max and
Best Buy. See the link for specs:
http://www.sotecglobal.com/us/products/?catid=11&subid=102&prodid=1002

* First things
I dropped Knoppix 3.1 into the 3120X I found at a local Office Max. It works,
but requires the boot line
   knoppix lang=us noscsi
or it will hang on seeking the scsi modules. But x11, sound, ... all work
immediately under Knoppix, which is good. The pre-Debian 3.0 cdrom I have
needed
   linux video=vga16:off
or the framebuffer would get confused, and the console get unusable.

* Annoyances
The laptop comes with M$ XP home preinstalled as well as on three Ghost
disks. I did not succeed in resizing the disks using free software.
Partition Magic 8.0 worked, and I was able to install Debian 3.0 without too
much trouble. I pretty much used the Knoppix settings whenever something
wasn't immediately working (as e.g. x11 or sound). Apm does not appear to be
supported in the bios, which sucks.

* Niceties
The laptop is small and light but not miniscule, light and reasonably
fast. Linux works fine. Haven't tried the dvd player yet for lack of a dvd.

I intend to post some more notes at
http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/linux/sotec3123x.html

woody on T23

2002-12-21 Thread Hugh Saunders
hello all!
have v nice T23 which was running linux just fine... [apart from irda]
untill I recompiled my kernel from the 2.4.18 source. Now i get major
video corruption on resume from suspend which can only be solved by
rebooting. This doesnt happen if i boot from the stock 2.4.18-bf24
kernel, any ideas as to what i need to set in my kernel config to sort
this out?

also, i have never got irda to work [want to use gnokki!] does anyone
know which irda modules i need for the transciever in the t23, i cannot
seem to identify it.

thanks,

hugh saunders

Get and build a version of the kernel that is correct, I'm using 2.5.5x,
but the latest 2.4.20's should work fine too.

I don't know which utility you're using to configure X with, but there's
definately a radeon driver in X4.2. Moreover, X should autodetect the
card and the driver to use automatically.

SMC2632W V.2

2002-12-21 Thread Maximilian Pascher
Hi,
I hava here a SMC2632W version 2 wlan card and it simply doesn't work. I hear
a beep (the low frequent one) when I insert it, but I can't find anything in
any logfiles...
I already tried the atmel-chipset driver that can be found on sourceforge, but
it didn't work.
I use the 2.4.19 kernel from kernel.org.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks

Debian success on IBM X30

2002-12-21 Thread Seth Golub

I just wanted to let people know that I had no trouble putting Debian
on my new IBM X30. I had to use the linux-wlan prism2_pci driver (not
supplied with Debian), as the Orinoco driver in 2.4.20 didn't work
well, but everything else was just great.

I put up more details at http://www.aigeek.com/laptop/ibm-x30/
which will get linked to from the linux laptops page eventually.

Thinkpad S30 installation error.

2002-12-21 Thread Yoshi Kanai

Hello,

This is first time to send message to this mailing
list.  I am facing an error when installing woody by USB-FDD to IBM
ThinkPad S30.  The procedure is below.

1 : boot from USB-FDD with rescue FDD.
2 : type below to boot prompt.
 linux
floppy=ThinkPad   then ENTER
3 : Then I insert root floppy when I see following
message.
VFS: Insert root floppy and press
ENTER.
4 : But ThinkPad can not read the FDD.  The
message is below.

VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM
disk and press ENTER
request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not
mounted
VFS: Insert root floppy and press
ENTER.

request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not
mounted
VFS:Cannot open root device "fd0" or
02:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot
option
Kernel panic:VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
02:00

I tried FDD image in "current" folder and "bf2.4"
folder.  But both of them did not work.
Do you have any idea how this error should be
resolved?

Best regards,
Yoshi
