Greetings !! Debian /laptop newbie
Greetings all ! I am new to Debian although not new to Linux.. and I just did my first Debian in stall on a Toshiba 486 -33 T4700CT Laptop. It has a 800 Meg HD 24 Megs Ram.. No CD.. No NIC/Modem Just a floppy and HD.. thats it. I downloaded all the floppies (26?) and did the Woody Base Install. I always heard Debian was harder to install and configure but once in was rock solid. I got encouraged by going to a presentation at my local LUG and decided to give Debian a try.. Now the base is in.. I will be needing help to get the rest done I am sure. I need an X window.. and productivity software, ( basic office suite.. or componenets thereof). I just wanted to introduce myself and my situation.. I look forward to talking with you all more. I amm sure some folks will mention screen as well for a WM. that one is cool , you have a comand prompt on top or on the side or where ever you like and then you type the app you want and it loads int eh other part of the screen,no menues and such but you get to have graphical apps with very little resources used.
Re: Greetings !! Debian /laptop newbie
Salve Mark, > I downloaded all the floppies (26?) this is realy taff :-) I have installed GNU/Linux on a Toshiba Libretto, also 800 MB HD, but I preferd to install this HD into an PC. Another idea would be to link your Laptop with an other PC with a nullmodem cable (serial) or a laplink cable (parallel). I havn't experiances with this, but a link for you: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/PLIP-Install-HOWTO.html These cables are cheap to make yourself. And this link is not only interesting for installation, you can run TCP/IP for an local net, for backups, printer sharing, internet ... Greetings from Aachen, rob
Mouse on a dell Latitude C640
Hi all, I have a dell Latitude C640, and running kernel 2.4.18 with XF86 4.2.1 The laptop has both a touchpad and the tracking stick as built-in tracking device. My problem seems to be in how these respond. The touchpad seems very sensitive, it will do stuff even though i am not touching it. In addition, the regular mouse buttons do not always respond to clicking. in XF86Config-4 the protocol is set to "PS/2" and the device to "/dev/psaux" Any help would be greatly appreciated :-) Ori __ Do you Yahoo!? blank screen on bootup
Hi, I just installed debian via the net (media-less install) on my iBook (purchased in August this year). I have separate partitions for OS X and OS 9. When I rebooted after installing debian, I just get a blank black screen. I can boot into the other operating systems by pressing the option key at startup and choosing a different startup volume. The debian disk (disk with a penguin) shows up on that menu too. Any help please? Ashifi http://www.ashifigogo.info
Re: Thinkpad 770ED, Debian Sarge, new XFree 4.2.1
try not using the kernel frame buffer. reconfigure the xserver-xfree86 package and when you get to the part that asks about the framebuffer, say no. see where that gets you. some times that could hose your system. - Original Message - From: "Jeremy Petzold" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Darin Strait" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Monday, November 11, 2002 10:34 PM Subject: Re: Thinkpad 770ED, Debian Sarge, new XFree 4.2.1 > did you do a "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and a "dpkg-reconfigure > xserver-comon"? > see if that fixes it. > > also, what is your videocard? and how much ram does it have? It runs Woody and kernel 2.4.19. I've found that the touchpad is quite sensitive as well. I set the BIOS so that when I have a regular mouse plugged into the PS/2 port the touchpad and stick are disabled. This doesn't work when I have a usb mouse plugged in though. I've simply learned to keep my hands, and mostly my thumbs, away from the pad when using the keyboard. My buttons work okay. They could be a bit easier to depress though. Perhaps your's are just new and need to loosen up. I don't know of a way to adjust the sensitivity of the pad or the buttons. sorry, jc -- Jeff CoppockSystems Engineer Diggin' Debian Admin and User

I amm sure some folks will mention screen as well for a WM. that one is cool , you have a comand prompt on top or on the side or where ever you like and then you type the app you want and it loads int eh other part of the screen,no menues and such but you get to have graphical apps with very little resources used. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
Ashifi http://www.ashifigogo.info -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
- Original Message - From: "Jeremy Petzold" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Darin Strait" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, November 11, 2002 10:34 PM Subject: Re: Thinkpad 770ED, Debian Sarge, new XFree 4.2.1 > did you do a "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and a "dpkg-reconfigure > xserver-comon"? > see if that fixes it. > > also, what is your videocard? and how much ram does it have? It runs Woody and kernel 2.4.19. I've found that the touchpad is quite sensitive as well. I set the BIOS so that when I have a regular mouse plugged into the PS/2 port the touchpad and stick are disabled. This doesn't work when I have a usb mouse plugged in though. I've simply learned to keep my hands, and mostly my thumbs, away from the pad when using the keyboard. My buttons work okay. They could be a bit easier to depress though. Perhaps your's are just new and need to loosen up. I don't know of a way to adjust the sensitivity of the pad or the buttons. sorry, jc -- Jeff CoppockSystems Engineer Diggin' Debian Admin and User -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
