kernel 2.4.19 and inspiron 2600
Unfortunately I have got a Inspiron 2600 Dell laptop. It has a i830 Intel VGA card with shared memory so i have to use kernel-image 2.4.19 that supports it. Firstly i compiled it from a fresh source that I have got from kernel.org it didn't work complaining that she couldn't mount the root ?! After that I installed kernel-2.4.19-386 from testing distrib by apt-get. Now it can boot the system, but it complaining that the root filesystem is readonly so it can't write the log file and such a things, and worst tat that it couldn't run modprobe, so I missed every module on it. I think the problem is with initrd.img. Can anybody help me please to librate my laptop ? Thanks a lot Arash
Problems with external keyboard / PS2 Y-cable
Hi list, maybe someone can give me a hint here... I have an Acer TravelMate 730 notebook which has only one PS/2 port. However, the vendor offers a Y-cable to attach keyboard and mouse simultaniously. I want to use a KMM switch with my desktop computer at home. So I bought a simple PS/2 Y-cable and tried to connect keyboard and mouse to the notebook. But it doesn't work. I cannot use keyboard nor mouse on the notebook, just the built-in keyboard and touchpad. If I plug in only the mouse, it works flawlessly. However, if I connect the keyboard instead of the mouse, I get error messages from the kernel asking me if the keyboard is present... the internal keyboard still works, just the external not. I read on the Laptop-Howto that a Y-cable should work... so has anyone experience with that? Any hints? Thanx Arne

Re: kernel 2.4.19 and inspiron 2600
Most distributions now compile filesystem support as modules. An initrd image contains those modules; they must be loaded and initialized before you can mount the root filesystem. You have two alternatives: 1. Make an initrd image, and configure your boot loader to use it. 2. Compile support for the root filesystem into the kernel instead of as a module. (This is easier, so it's what I do.) Kevin On Tue, 24 Sep 2002 11:27:58 -0700 Arash Bijanzadeh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Unfortunately I have got a Inspiron 2600 Dell laptop. Re: bash: ./setiathome: Permission denied
The fact that bash gives "cannot execute binary file" suggests that "setiathome" is an executable and not a script. The default permission of 555 is ok, that is read + execute for all users: 4 (read) + 1 (execute). If you run it like ./setiathome or /directory/where/program/is/setiathome then there is something wrong with the program. Bijan
RE: bash: ./setiathome: Permission denied
Perhaps ./setiathome is a script, using #!/bin/bash as its interpreter, it is calling another (binary) executable, that does not have execute permissions. I don't have the latest version of setiathome, so this is all speculation, but it would seem to explain everything I have read in this thread so far. It really isn't easier if you used make-kpkg to make the kernel - make-kpkg builds the initrd image for you (though I vaguely recall there was an initrd.conf setup somewhere, long ago - see mkinitrd). Of course, if you don't use make-kpkg, then you're not interested in doing things the easy way :-)

Werner, I've a 505TX, with FreeBSD and Windows 98. I've found the Sony CD useless, and I'm sure that at several points in the past three years I've tried to install from a Rh or SUSE or ... or Debian CD, without success. My suggestion (which I'll have to follow since my IBM T21 has a flaky CD), is to install from floppies. I already know how to do this for FreeBSD, it will be a learning experience for Debian. Also with XFree86 v4.x you may try XFree86 -configure and let X do the job for you. And there are many other websites around describing Linux on SONY VAIO *505* series. There you might find the CD rom trick, too. Since http://www.linux-on-laptops.net seems not reachable today just use Google. I've found that you must install _either_ apm or acpi to get power off functionality on Inspirons. Some Inspirons fully support apm, others (like my 2500) only really support ACPI (and not very well, at that) but even on the ACPI-only machines they'll shut down fully using either apm or acpi. -- derek

And according to http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Status17.html#17 and http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status17.html#17, it is only supported on XFree 4.2, you should then try the experimental XFree 4.2 packages from Branden Robinson at http://people.debian.org/~branden/ HTH Fred
Why is X-config not so easy as Knoppix ?
Salve, sorry to write you about my X-config problems. I'm unhappy to have no idea how and where to find informations to solve the problem myself. And I must say as Debian-newbe that I like Woody, but to run X-Server on my Laptop I have no clue. To search for x86freeconfig-file in the internet is not the smart solution. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 4000 with a ATI Mobility 3 card and my Woody instalation dosn't start X. When X-Server should start (GDM) the skript stopped with "Error: No screens found" Then starts a tool using 1028x768 X resulution with Keymouse. Nice tool but for configuration basics would be non mouse/grafic tool more usable. I tried several combinations - but no succsess. Does the general installation support LCDs? Does Woody has an other non grafical tool to install X86free? or have Woody a DB of x86free config files for Laptops And finaly, why isn't it so easy like with Knoppix? If someone could help me would be fine, but I think this point of the installation is not perfect - or have I done a big mistake? Thanks in advands, rob

As I have an Nvidia geforce 4 Go 420 graphic card, I thought that everything would be OK. Unfortunately for you, the Geforce Go cards (for laptops) are not yet supported by XFree86. Your only option is then to try the proprietary drivers from nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=products_supported). Fred
dual head on ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY
Hi, I've bought an IBM Thinkpad R32 with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (rev 0) card, which supports dual head (at least under the pre-installed Win XP) just fine. I've successfully installed Debian/Woody with the experimental XFree86 4.2.1 packages. Now, I want to configure dual head operation with an external monitor under Linux. I've already read the Xinerama HOWTO and found a message on this list, that it should work with my card. If I understand things correctly, one has to put two devices with a different BusID into /etc/X11/XFree86-4. However, I only find one graphic-adapter on my pci-bus. Here is output of lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82845 845 (Brookdale) Chipset Host Bridge (rev 04) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82845 845 (Brookdale) Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 04) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 2482 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 2484 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 2487 (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82820 820 (Camino 2) Chipset PCI (-M) (rev 42) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 248c (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 248a (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 2483 (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. Is it correct, that for Xinerama, there would have to be a second VGA device in this listing? Or is there another way to set it up correctly? Are there perhaps any kernel/bios parameters that would result in another vga device popping up in the lspci listing? ciao Sebastian -- Sebastian Kanthak| [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Of course, if you don't use make-kpkg, then you're not interested in doing things the easy way :-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Thank you for the pointer; that solves one of my problems. The other problem remains -- bash will not execute files that it should, based on ownership and permissions. I've found that you must install _either_ apm or acpi to get power off functionality on Inspirons. Some Inspirons fully support apm, others (like my 2500) only really support ACPI (and not very well, at that) but even on the ACPI-only machines they'll shut down fully using either apm or acpi. -- derek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". And according to http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/Status17.html#17 and http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status17.html#17, it is only supported on XFree 4.2, you should then try the experimental XFree 4.2 packages from Branden Robinson at http://people.debian.org/~branden/ HTH Fred -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
As I have an Nvidia geforce 4 Go 420 graphic card, I thought that everything would be OK. Unfortunately for you, the Geforce Go cards (for laptops) are not yet supported by XFree86. Your only option is then to try the proprietary drivers from nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=products_supported). dual head on ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY
Are there perhaps any kernel/bios parameters that would result in another vga device popping up in the lspci listing? ciao Sebastian -- Sebastian Kanthak| [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Nvidia Xfree drivers
"apt-cache search nvidia" will show that debian contains installer scripts for the binary-only drivers by nvidia. You need both nvidia-*-src packages; they include installation manuals in /usr/share/doc//README* Greetings, Erich -- erich@(mucl.de|debian.org)--GPG Key ID: 4B3A135C The best things in life are free: Friendship and Love. Mostly you just need to explain things to X Try adding these sections to your /etc/XF86Config-4: Section "ServerFlags" Option "Xinerama" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout 1" Screen 0 "SCREEN 1" Screen 1 "SCREEN 2" LeftOf "SCREEN 1" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection (Your info here will be different than mine) Section "Device" Identifier "MGA 1" VendorName "Matrox" BoardName "MGA G550 AGP" Driver "mga" Option "AGPMode" "1" BusID "PCI:01:00:0" Screen 0 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "MGA 2" VendorName "Matrox" BoardName "MGA G550 AGP" Driver "mga" Option "AGPMode" "1" BusID "PCI:01:00:0" Screen 1 EndSection Section "Monitor" Identiifier "Display 1" VendorName "Compaq" ModelName "S900" HorizSync 30-100 VertRefresh 50-160 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Display 2" VendorName "Compaq" ModelName "1725" HorizSync 31.5-64.3 VertRefresh 50-100 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "SCREEN 1" Device "MGA 1" Monitor "Display 1" DefaultDepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection (Add SubSections as above for other Depth and Modes as you require) Section "Screen" Identifier "SCREEN 2" Device "MGA 2" Monitor "Display 2" DefaultDepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection You should be able to figure it out from here. Notice that both "Device" Sections have the same BusID, and remember to tell the server where the screens are in relation to each other. Everything is case sensitive. Bon Chance!
