kdm and qt-3.1.2
Hi, yesterday i upgrade my woody with 5 new qt-packages and realized that kdm then displayed (fixed width?) the possible users in a strange way: With qt-3.1.1 the complete Username (Wolfgang Meier) was displayed in one line and below that te uid (wom). After the upgrade the user-"window" of kdm was much smaller and the only displayed item was "Wolf" (obviously the beginning of the name. What could i do better? In the meantime i was able to downgrade back to qt-3.1.1 and anything is fine again. With regards, Bernt Christandl
kppp fails authentication for normal user
Hi, yesterday i set up a laptop with woody and kde-3.1, compiled the ltmodem-module for the Lucent Winmodem and could connect over the modem to our modemserver without problems, after i commented out the "auth" in the /etc/ppp/options file - as "root" only ... But whatever i tried with the options-file or with parameters for kppp, i completely failed to authenticate as a normal user. Either with return code 19 (authentication failed) or with return code 2 (possiby conflicting parameters) when i entered "noauth" as a parameter to ppp in kppp. If this is important: Our modemserver runs RADIUS and needs to get a "real" UID/PW from kppp to establish a connection. Any ideas of how to overcome this? With regards, Bernt Christandl
Laptop blues
Hi all, i'm trying to set up my laptop Siemens Lifebook C with VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64) with woody and xfree86-4 and kde... and i'm getting the blues! -> with xserver xfree86-mach64 (xfree86-3) and kde-3.1 i had a running environment, but even with xfstt fonts were not as with xfree86-4. And my grafic was not supporting GL stuff... -> with xfree86-xserver (xfree86-4) and kde-3.1 fonts were fine, but when i switch back from my grafics-screen (ALT-CTRL F7) to any ascii-console (ALT-CTRL-F1...6) i only see vertical flickering lines... At least i could switch back to F7. -> then today i upgraded to kde-3.1.1 and qt-3.1.2 to get rid of the message that 162 packages should be upgraded. After that with xfree86-mach64 the kdm crashed 3 times so X was not started at all. -> with xfree86-4 kdm runs at least, but still shows the bug with/from qt-3.1.2 discussed on this list, so i downgraded back to qt-3.1.1. Now also the combination kdm/xfree86-mach64 is running. -> but then i realized, that the menus behind the mouse-buttons are gone :( When i login (xfree86-3-or-4) i see in the upper left corner 3 icons appearing and then the background is drawn again (flat color, no wallpaper) "over that" and on my desktop are no icons and no menus behind the mouse-buttos :( For space reasons i did a "apt-get clean" and now all my kde-3.1 stuff is lost. Where can i find these packages now? How can i tell "ktown" that i want to downgrade back to 3.1? Is anybody using that ATI Rage Mobility successfully with xfree86-4 and can tell me how to configure it better than i have done? With best regards, Bernt Christandl
Re: Laptop blues
Hello all, replying to my own thread, because i think, i've found my mistake now... Now, after i did another (of several) re-installs, my ascii-consoles (ALT-CTRL-F1...6) and my grafics-screen (ALT-CTRL-F7) are working properly (i hope). When at installation time the kernel-driver include part comes, i had installed the ati128-something driver before, which i now did not. Also, when configuring the xserver, before i tried to use "ati", now i'm using "vesa"... Additionally with the recent kde-3.1.1 and qt-3.1.2 packages from Ralf the "fixed width" problem of kdm is solved for me too. So i'm nearly happy now :) With regards, Bernt Christandl > --- > > Hi all, > > i'm trying to set up my laptop > > Siemens Lifebook C with > VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x > (rev 64) > > with woody and xfree86-4 and kde... > and i'm getting the blues! > > -> with xserver xfree86-mach64 (xfree86-3) and kde-3.1 >i had a running environment, but even with xfstt fonts were not >as with xfree86-4. icons on the desktop
Hello all, another thing i'm trying to learn: I can place icons on the desktop to start with on click my application. With the help of konqueror i'm able to drag(?) such an icon on the desktop and create my link. Question: How can i have "my" Icon instead of the konqueror "shell" for this purpose? Example: How can i place the OpenOffice-gulls-icon on the desktop and have OpenOffice starting when i click on it? With the kde-menueditor i can only see, the icon is there, but not drag as from konqueror :( Where is the doc i did not find? With regards, Bernt Christandl
customizing desktop icons
Hello desktop-gurus, i thought this to be easy, nevertheless i failed with this :( I have kde-3.1. If i create an icon on the desktop "somehow" (drag it from kmenu or konqueror) to start with it an application directly (e.g. mozilla or openoffice) the icon is always the "shell on a paper" for "shell-script". How can i change this shell to another icon (the mozilla-dragon or the openoffice-gulls)? Somehow it must work, because e.g. SuSE does this since long time, but (for other reasons) i don't like the idea to go back to SuSE-Linux. With regards, Bernt Christandl
Re: customizing desktop icons
Hello Charles, thank you very much for your answer to my question! I asked: > How can i change this shell to another icon (the mozilla-dragon or > the openoffice-gulls)? Charles de Miramon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> answered: > Right-click on the icon > Select 'properties' > On the property windows click on the icon and you'll get the dialog for > selecting another icon. And that was what i tried before - only that in the upcoming properties-window that shell-icon is not "clickable", that is: nothing at all does happen when i click on it :( My system is debian-based and i have installed all the kde-3.1 packages (with one exception: the internationalization package) and i did not find any error in the installation logs (as far as i remember). I compiled all these on my machine, because for several reasons it was impossible to use the debian-kde-packages. Any idea what may have gone wrong? With regards, Bernt Christandl
