Options for kdepim using kde 4.7/unstable?

2012-03-13 Thread Johannes Graumann
Hi,

For my new laptop I'm tempted to go with kde 4.7 as now residing in
unstable. However, the lack of kdepim therein is a show stopper for me. Do
inofficial repositories exist to get kontact none the less? Are their other
options?

Thanks for any hints, Joh

I do not understand your question. Kontact is in unstable [1].

Kind regards

Great work...

2012-03-13 Thread Michael Haag
Just wanted to drop you all a note about how much I appreciate your work
for Debian, especially as it relates to KDE. It is unfortunate that KDE
on Debian seems to be overlooked by almost everyone in the GNU/Linux
world, at least as far as end-users and reviewers are concerned.

I've been using KDE since it was released under the GPL/LGPL and I've
run it on several distros, including Red Hat (in the early days),
Libranet (best distro ever) Xandros, SuSE, and Mepis. I tried Kubuntu a
couple of times (quite some time ago) and PCLinuxOS, and a few others
I've since forgotten. I personally preferred SuSE until the Lenny
release. I've been with Debian ever since.

I did not switch to the "new and improved" version of KDE until Squeeze
was released (actually, while it was still "testing"). In my opinion,
Debian has the best "KDE distro" out there, yet I have seen it
mentioned in any discussion of the KDE desktop. Shame, really. It may
not be perfect, but it's damn close. Certainly better than anything else
I've ever tried. It's unfortunate you guys don't get more (any) press.

Keep up the good work! It is much appreciated, by me at least.

Sincerely, Michael Haag

Current kde from unstable is a bad idea for a laptop imho, because for some
reason, plasma-desktop permanently pulls some % of cpu time, therefore
ruining battery life.

Dietz, I'm running KDE from unstable and I don't have that problem (I've
had kwin/xorg using excessive CPU before but not plasma-desktop and not
now). In fact, I'm currently getting about the lowest power usage I've ever
had from my laptop with full KDE + compositing!

Use kdepim that is in unstable. kdepim 4.7 is crap, you don't want to use it
if you value your data.

Hello,

Can you be more specific (or link to a bug report or thread or ...)? I am using
kdepim in unstable and I did not observe such behaviour; but I am very
interested in anything that could reduce the power consumption.

Thank you.
Best regards,
Gurvan

Thanks for all the hints and info. Running 4.4 on 4.7.
